Okay. My girlfriend has me going to her sorority formal. This is at Emory University which is a private college at $42k a pop and is full of a bunch of people who apparently know how to wear ties and suits and stuff (Most are future doctors). I'm a damn silverback trying to blend in.

Today I bought a blue button down shirt and a tie since I owned neither. I do have a jacket and black pants from my Grandparents funeral but that was a while back and I have no clue how to dress up. Other than the funerals I've never worn a suit. My aunt tied the tie for me at my grandparents funerals.

Well anyways I've been watching a vid and some instructionals on how to tie a tie and got it okay. But the main thing I notice is a huge gigantic gap at the collar level. My neck is too thick to button the very top button leaving a wide gap. And my triangle thingy looks small as hell.

Do you leave the top button unbottoned? Or is it meant to be buttoned cause buttoning is not even close to an option. Also my collar looks high.

Do you have some pictures?

Your neck size on your shirt sounds too small. I'd take it back for the correct size, if you can. The top button should be buttoned, IMO,

Are you tightening the knot too much, making it small?

How long ago was the funeral? Meaning are your jacket and pants still in style or are they dated?

The collar could look high since you are obviously not used to wearing this type of shirt.

You need to get a shirt with a neck that fits you - you can't get the "L" or "XL" size... you need to get a shirt with an actual size on the shirt (if you're wearing a L or XL and it's too tight to button, odds are you'll need at least an 18 1/2)... if it's a formal, you will probably want the top button buttoned for at least the beginning - you can open it up later in the evening.

As for the tie knot looking small, you may need to use a Half Windsor knot to make the triangle bigger... (google it and several how-to sites will come up)

If you don't like her, fuck it, wear t-shirt and jeans.

Take that shit back and get another one. Take a tape measure around your neck to get the neck size. You want a shirt with real neck and sleeve sizes, not some generic S M L XL bullshit. Also make sure the sleeves are long enough that a little bit of it is sticking past your jacket when your arms are at your sides. BTW don't buy shit at Sears, you'll look like a grandfather.

Get a shirt that fits. It sounds like you need a shirt with actual measurements, not just L, XL, etc. Anyplace that sells decent shirts will be able to take your measurements for you. It is quick and easy and there are only 2 numbers, neck and sleeve length. You can wear the nicest suit and tie ever made, if your shirt doesn't fit it will show.

Concerning the tie, look up a full Windsor knot. That will give you a larger "triangle" (I'm guessing you mean the knot itself). Also, once tied the end of the tie should be right around your belt buckle. I don't really think there is a perfect length but too far on either end looks goofy.

I talked to my dad and I got way too small. I got a 16 1/2 and apparently it's a "Fitted" shirt. Major Fail on my part. It said large and I thought Large was Large. I then tried an old 17 1/2 and it was too small too. I guess I need an 18 or 18 1/2

I'll get a new one tommorow and hopefully find a dry cleaner that can have it pressed or something by Friday afternoon since I won't be near my home for a few days (Nickleback Concert Thursday!!! My kind of formal)

I dig this girl and even though I know I'll embarass her I don't want it to be because of my suit. Problem is she is slumming big time and has to polish the hell out of this turd. She says she doesn't care but I'd like to try out wearing a suit to an event where someone didn't start off dead.

If you are wearing a sport coat and slacks (where they aren't made of the same fabric), then go with a shirt that's got a button-down collar (the points of the collar are buttoned down). It's considered a more casual look that goes well with a sport coat. But if you are wearing a real suit (the pants and coat are the same fabric), use a more formal shirt with a collar that doesn't button down.

Best bet for newbs is to stick with solid-colored shirts instead of patterned, so they don't clash with their tie.

Well honestly I know she really doesn't care. I told her I planned to wear a black suit with a light blue shirt. I even offered to show her a picture and email it to her but she said to suprise her. She's crazy about me and all but I still don't want to be the underdressed dude.

I talked to my dad and he is going to try and exchange the shirt at Kholes tommorow and get me a new one with an 18 1/2 inch neck. Then he is going to press it for me (my dad rules!). Sleeves were good on my other and the fitted actually fit well except for the neck. But I'm not going to go to Men's Wearhouse for a $100 custom fit shirt. I'll stick to the $20 form Kholes or whatever.

But if I do look goofy all the guys at her school are a bunch of skinny nerds (aka all of our future bosses) so they won't say anything (until they are my boss). And all of her sorority sisters think I'm the greatest thing ever.

Appreciate the info guys. Hopefully it won't be too big of a disaster.

best thing you can do is, if you have a few bucks to spend, go to men's warehouse or a similar store - some respectable store that sells suits.. find a hot chick saleswoman.. tell her listen i am clueless please help me and explain your situation.. i have dressed up my entire life but i still do that anyways.. i figure a couple of things - 1. a hot chick is going to dress you how she would like to see you therefore other hot chicks will dig you kwim? 2. it's pretty cool to have the complete undivided attention of a hot chick for 30 minutes even if it is just that she is a cheap and easy commission whore that will discard you like a used piece of trash once the sale is complete..

ok well even kohl's you can find a hot saleswoman and do the same thing i reckon.. i just think it's more effective at a place like men's warehouse.. and the shirts aren't $100 they are more like $30 or so for a decent shirt at MWH.. I have seen shirts at Kohl's that cost more..

If you get desperate you can try one of the no iron shirts, but the only ones I know of that don't come out looking like shit are Brooks Brothers.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. While I was never involved with fraternities or anything like that, based on the schools where I have spent time most of the people look like complete dirt bags most of the time. I also wouldn't worry too much about embarrassing her. If there is alcohol around you can feel pretty secure that most of the people there will not remember what they were wearing, much less what you had on.

Double Windsor FTW! Try Marshall Field's (or Belk's) for the shirt. You can often catch a good sale there. If the jacket is okay but you are concerned about the slacks. You can get a decent pair for under $50 (Izod, Dockers, etc). Suit jackets are timeless for the most part but slacks can get dated and ill fitting. I'm mostly wondering about what you are planning to wear for shoes. I don't know how "formal" we're talking here but a nice pair of khaki slacks, a lt blue shirt, a nice tie and a black jacket should look decent. Get a decent hair cut/shoes and away you go!

Oh boy.... you are right up my alley. I've been working at a Casual Male so long, that I could size you by just looking at you.

What size tee do you wear, 1X or 2X? Odds are if he buys you an 18 1/2 the neck will be good, but you might have too much matierial around the waist if you are a 1X. If so, go with the better fitting 18 and buy a button extender, every shop has them..... and their like $2! And YES you need to button the top button!

Also take into consideration your arm length. Are you a 35/36 or a 37/38??? You gotta be attentive to that, cause if you are wearing a suit, a shirt thats too short or too long ruins the look.

Think i sell too many dress shirts???? :bash:

You nailed my problem exactly- I'm tall and in good shape, so I have an 18 neck and a 37/38 sleeve, but my waist is relatively narrow so most shirts that fit my sleeve length and collar end up fitting nicely at the chest but are too big at the waist. Honestly, the best fitting shirt I own is one I never thought I'd wear- Sean John.

Oh, and for the tie- if you're a big guy, tie a double windsor. Google it. Anything less looks goofy if you have a big neck. ;)

ok first don't assume you know the size you need. You've already said you don't wear these things. go to a jc penny's where they have a men's dept. I say penny's because they will size for free and if you don't buy their product they don't care.

the triangle thingy of the tie should be pressed tightly against the neck. yes it's hard to breathe if you're not used to wearing them. It will feel very uncomfortable and the more you mention it to people the worse it will seem. the good news is if you get a shirt that fits well and the tie is done properly after about 15 minutes in the place you can loosen the top button and few will notice.

try on the clothes for yourself well in advance. Make sure you are comfortable and like the way you look. launder them befoore wearing, get rid of the new shirt smell and those really tight creases.

these tid bits come to you from someone who had to admit to a drill sargeant I had never worn a dress shirt before basic training. Later in life I had to buy dress shoes on my way to an interview. I know exactly how you feel. After now "dressing up" almost every day I will tell you, it's not bad. It never gets as comfortable as jeans and a t shirt, but if you like the way you look and just realize everyone looks the same it's ok. Most important thing though is get stuff that fits.

Oh and if you want to cheat have someone tie the tie for you and just loosen it a little to put it on.

Get a 'fitted' shirt, with sleeves long enough that the cuffs protrude from the suit jacket's sleeves by about an inch. Go 1/2" over on the neck size. Make it light blue. Wash it a couple of times and iron it. Wear an undershirt, to keep the sweat down.

Get a burgundy tie; either plain, or with an understated grey pattern on it. Medium width. If you aren't a bull-neck, keep it to a single Windsor. Having a slightly larger collar than you need on the shirt will let you tie it to look snug, without strangling yourself. Get a tie clip. It doesn't need to be expensive. It'll keep your tie out of your soup and drinks.

Get your suit dry cleaned and have them put 'permanent creases' in the pants. The creases shouldn't cost more than $10-$15 and should be able to be done overnight, or over two days at the most.

Get yourself some crepe sole shoes. Cheap, comfortable, clean, and new beats old, expensive, and have the crap polished out of them. You can pick up a pair of comfortable dress-like shoes for under $30. Don't under estimate how important having comfortable feet is when you're likely going to be standing around for hours.

Mudpuppy was pretty on target...I used to work in the men's department at Dillards and at least once a week some poor guy came in looking for assistance in dressing himself...most fun part of the job was dragging him from one side of the store to another getting the whole set up...I hated dolls as a kid, but a life size one FTW!! And setting them up for a hot date, even better!

I recommend Dillards. They have trained people (typically) in their men's department that can measure you, size you and put you in exactly the right kind of shirt, right color, with the right tie and slacks and often even pre-tie the tie for you around $100 or less. Take your shoes and jacket in with you. It helps!

I want to see pics of this event now mister!

Well I was too busy with work to try a shirt on myself so I sent my dad out and he exhanged the shirt with an 18 1/2" neck that fits okay I guess. Maybe a little tight I don't know. I'm a big back and thick neck mother fucker from genetics and years of hard manual labor (moving pool tables and now digging). The problem now is it looks like I got a parachute cause it's fairly large but the neck atleast fits. With the jacket on it looks decent without well fuck it. Once I get to about 200lbs I might look into a decent fitted shirt. I won't need one of those until her next semester formals which is many many many months away.

To me dressing up was a decent looking 3 button down shirt that golfer would wear with some cargo pants. I didn't tuck in though (Shit I need to see if I have a decent belt)

No pictures! Infact I'm trying to make sure my buddy or his wife can't contact her in some way cause they said they'd pay her $100 for a picture of me in a suit.

But here is a pic of just about how I look...

Oh man this one is right up my alley, though a lot of the good advice has already been given.

I have your same problem: 6'2, 215 and in great shape, so its hard to get shirts that will fit in the shoulders and neck, but not be made for fatasses.

While it's a pain, it's worth the coin to buy a custom tailored shirt. You will also need to have your jacket tailored, since anything off the rack that fits in the shoulders is going to be huge through the waist.

Already been said, but the double windsor is your best friend. That skinny tie bullshit will be over in a flash - I say go classic.

If you are going with a print on your shirt, make sure it's a muted print, with a brighter tie - You never want your shirt to overshadow or clash with your tie.

What type of a jacket did you go with? Tall guys will generally benefit from a 2 (3 at the most) button single breasted jacket, and the lapel type is up to you. (Double breasted is nice, but prob more formal than you want to go)

If you decide on a pinstripe, make it subtle - those loud ass bright pinstripe suits are for tools and guidos.

Probably the best advice that I can give you, is to make absolutely sure that your suit fits and fits well. Even the most well put together suit can look like shit if it doesn't fit the wearer properly. Spend the cash (And its usually fairly cheap) to have your suit tailored if necessary.

Good luck man - Smack your girls ass for all of Twfix.

F a Half Windsor, Full is where its at.

Or you could go in Style...

Get a 3 button jacket, vertical stripe shirt, and a contrasting tie. Leave the bottom button of the jacket unbuttoned.

Unpleated pants, unless you are a fatass.

You really should have your suit tailored to give a nice fit look. Shit drooping all over the place looks terrible. Also, when you tie your tie, please do it right. The tip of the tie should just touch the top of your belt when standing up straight. Not drape over it and not be all short. Geeze that looks terrible when people can't determine the right length of the tie.

Pleated pants? When you have on your suit jacket it covers the pleats anyway. Now if you take the jacket off then it's not really a suit anymore, it's just a dress shirt with slacks. All my suit pants are pleated and cuffed. BTW Mens Warehouse is the bomb when it comes to suits. I get all my suits and sport coats there. Their dress shoes are ridiculous though.

Damn, I missed all the fun. Lots of good advice here. The only thing I'll add is about the knot. I've seen some people recommend half, full, and double windsor knots, but that's kind of a half answer. The knot should go with the style of collar your shirt has. If your collar is long and narrow, a double windsor knot is complete fucking overkill. The collar will end up covering up most of the knot and it'll look fucking retarded. On the opposite end of it, if the collar has a wide, shorter part, a half windsor knot wouldn't be large enough, and again, would look retarded. Stay far away from a four in hand knot. That's bush league cub scout shit that ruins any shirt. If you got the shirt from Kohl's, chances are that a full windsor will fit the bill, or if the tie is a good material, a Shelby/Pratt knot will give a good sized "triangle" to fill the collar and it's a little easier to tie than a Windsor.

Plus if you have a long face, a long "point" collar looks fucking retarded. Just like someone with a fat, round face looks fucking retarded with a spread collar.

This is the entire reason I go for trailer-trash...I'm not wearing a tie!!!

Trailer trash girl's don't have $100k+ job offers. Though she'll probably end up a lawyer which is kind of scary. Luckily I only have to dress up twice a year. Semi-formal (but guys dress like a formal) and Formal (what I just did).

I did the formal and realized what an untapped resource Emory University is when it comes to hunting tail. There were more gay guys at the party than straight guys and more girls than guys. Emory is an ungodly hard school and is full of nerds. And the closest real college is Georgia Tech which is full of nerds. They are not use to "Men" coming into their world and when they do they freaking love them to death. Everytime her friends head out on the town they beg her to bring me. They said they feel safe when I'm with them.

Well Friday I said fuck it and went to Men's Wearhouse. They measured my neck and said it was 17 1/2 and got me an 18" collar. I figured out the tie thing fairly well too. It was still kind of baggy on me but I'll just have to get a straight up custom shirt if I want one. I have a big back, broad shoulders, and fairly muscular. Kind of a lineman build which also means I'm not like leaned and ripped up. So it fits tight on my shoulders and arms but baggy around.

I'll get a custom shirt once she gets back from Chicago next semester. By then I'll have a few Triathlons under my belt and will be much better built. So I'll get a custom then.

But those shirts fit on the skinny guys pefect.

Thanks for the help all. It was tough trying to get a knuckle dragger to stand upright but I think I did alright.

Good job.

Fucking hillarious about the college being an unttapped resource.

Oh man. It's freaking awesome. Now I'll say that most of the girls aren't as hot as say a lot of the Education Majors that are going to UGA, Auburn, Florida, etc. But there was one girl there that was Miss _________ quality and her date was a goofy ass looking mother fucker (not gay either). He got to tap it and if I remember correctly she is going to be a surgeon. I just wish I discovered this school earlier.

The best part is my gf and all of her friends pay for their own shit. They buy their own drinks, buy their own food, buy their own whatever. Try that at some SEC 4 year school with a chick from there. They expect you to pay for everything (from gum to a one week vacation to wherever) and your chance of getting ass is still 50/50. Chance of ass at Emory. 100% except with one girl who is still a virgin despite she gets hammered.

:nothing:

Except that I do love a man in a suit. :dribble:

That being said...

:nopicsbs:

Here is a pic of the suit. I actually tied that tie too. I'd still like to hang whomever came up with the idea of a suit with that tie.

Nice shoulders. PM a better pic and we'll give a special thread in the ladies section. :)

And please don't refer to yourself as a knuckle dragger. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a nice guy that appreciates a smart girl, and isn't afraid of her income potential.

Glad you had a good time and made your lady proud.

I would but us knuckle draggers have no clue how to get to the kitchen.

I think I'll get a tuxedo shirt next time. Maybe no one will notice...

I work at a clothing store and see guys trying on pleated and non pleated pants every day. 100% without a doubt pleated pants look much better on larger men (aka over a waist size 40). I believe anybody that wears non pleated pants look too "round". Now im not talking about any of you fuckers with a 28 in waist. redflip

Emory University. Though you are fucked (or lack of) this weekend. They have finals coming up and they are all studying like crazy. My girl is still up right now studying her ass off and probably won't get to bed until 4am to wake up at 8am to get with a group of hers. I know next Friday she has meetings until midnight. Chance of me getting ass next weekend is roughly 1%.

Unless you can find a Liberal Arts major. Only one I know is my GF's roomate who is a lesbian.

Hmmmm.... we might have to coordinate a study break my friend.... groups of hot frustrated girls.

Is said roommate hot? That could be interesting for you!

She hasn't quite come around to me yet. She's getting there but we started off on the wrong foot when we first met. Aparently she didn't appreciate her roomate calling her at 4am to bring her a key to her apartment so her roomate can fornicate.

Now I was told of one of the sororities that is full of a bunch of coked up sluts, but I can't remember which one it was. Just knock on the door with an 8ball (easily found in Atlanta) and you'll be good to go.

Pretty much everyone with a slim or athletic body wearing pleated pants looks like he's wearing parachute pants.
