View Full Version : Best Small Furry Pet

I really want a dog, but we don't have and don't want to put up a fence yet. So a dog is out of the question.

So the next best thing is something small and furry. Namely like a guinea pig or rabbit.

I actually almost killed a little baby bunny that had a nest in some high grass I was weedeating and messed up it's nest. I tried to rebuild it, but I don't think it came back in the night when I checked this morning. Hope it found it's momma.

Andrea has ruled out ferrets, I would love to have two ferrets.

Anyone have any experience in good small furry pets that require little maintenance and aren't big biters/mean when handling. I had hamsters before, I hated those little bastards.

Get a chinchila(I don't know how to spell it).

I don't know what they are, but it's really furry and soft!

dont necessarily NEED to have a fence for a dog, just walk them yourself and you're good to go. I do with mine daily, apartments kinda force you to.

gerbil. Low on biting and its a desert critter so it doesnt really pee and its poop is low on moisture and stink

Chinchilla or Guinea Pig(i loved ours)

Chinchillas are said to be EXTREMELY Hyper and will run for hours:idk: i never owned one

Pigs are Awesome little pets and the Squeaky noise they make is just plain Cute:sorry:

Ferrets are pretty damn cool you can play with them like a dog and just about tie them in a knot(Think Living noodle)
Litter Trainable like a Cat and Small like a rat

Make sure she uses a good conditioner.

Send her over to see my ferrets, she'll change her mine...

I've got 2: Bonnie & Clyde. As long as you keep the litter box cleaned and them bathed or spritzed, low to no odor, and you can add things to their water to completely descent them...and they chase the dog all over the house, they're a riot...

If no ferret...um...one of those flying squirrel things, but they can be mean if not handled alot.

I'd still go for a dog even though you don't have a fence. It takes some initial work in the training but it's very rewarding.

How about a bunny?

I am not a fan of leaving the dog in a crate for long periods and I would have to because she wouldn't let me keep it roaming free in the house while we are gone. Waiting for fence for a dog.

dog is a no go til fence. This is not debatable.

I would like a bunny, but I want more info before I get one and it be not the right pet for us. I don't want to get something and then have to give it up or try and find a new home/abandon it because we didn't do research before hand.

Hmmm...

You want a big dog or a lil dog? Youve seen my Abby, and while crating a large dog is sometimes seen as "mean" or "confined", many dogs do much better. Abby has quite literally had panic attacks when not put in her kennel. Its her happy safe place, and if she's left alone in the house to wander, she freaks out. My old roomies left her out one night when I wasnt home. I walked into my room to find her laying on the bed, in the dark, shaking so hard she was almost convulsing, her kennel 2 feet away but locked so she couldnt get in it.

I know you want a fence, but remember, even when you get a dog, most trainers recommend crating so there is always a "safe" zone for your dog to go to.

Anyhoo, rabbits are cool, but I have been told they LOVE to chew on everything if not properly supervised, like floors, furntiture, etc. But I think they can be litter trained too!

I had a couple pairs of fancy rats (one pair albino.. the other pair hooded).. and I've also had hedgehogs. Rats aren't really low maintenance (I had to clean their cage daily), and if they're not well socialized, they will bite, and their bites hurt and make you bleed.

Hedgehogs (as in the African Pygmy kind) are fairly low maintenance, are really great pets (again, if well socialized), but they're nocturnal, and that sometimes turns people off.

Having raised all manner of rodents, I recommend rats. Smart, cute, playful, and easy to care for. They can do tricks and they'll ride on your shoulder.

Just get a female, because males grow disgustingly huge testicles.

My pythons are quite fond of rats too.

Sorry, no dog. It's not an option.

Another reason for the no dog rule is I go on a lot of business trips. Andrea doesn't want to take care of it with walking/bathroom and such. She can't just let it out with no fence. A smaller furry animal that had a cage where she could feed it and just do a once over cleaning of the cage would be much easier on her.

Yeah I heard rabbits can be a pain. That's why I am leaning more to a guinea pig or chinchilla right now.

My experience has been just the opposite. Every hedgehog I've met or cared for has been a violent little asshole. They bite and they are covered in spines.

I've only had one rat bite, and that was at the end of her life, when she was sick and dying. My rats always had enclosures large enough that they only required cleaning once or twice a week.

If we didn't have so many damn dogs right now, I'd probably go buy another rat. Cheap furry fun-ness.

So were my alligators and monitors.

Nice, what kind of gators did ya have. A guy at work just offered me a 4 ft american alligator. I should just leave it for the LL.

I thought rats were kind of sociable, I know like all rodents you do need to keep their cages clean.

I only had one rat that liked to bite, but he was one that was a rescue from a research lab (they had trained him, but couldn't use him for their research anymore, so I took him in).. he wasn't very well socialized, and generally only bit when I tried to hand him a treat.

The hedgehogs I had one was very well socialized and only bit me once or twice (thought my finger was food  ). The other one was another rescue (one of my mom's friends didn't want her anymore), and yeah, she was a mean little bugger and really didn't like being handled. But I imagine that boils down to that whole socialization thing again..

I would still rather have rats if I were to choose.. they're a lot smarter and that whole lack of spines thing is nice when you want to pet them.

ETA: The biting thing I mentioned because while I only got bitten once or twice by either, rat bites leave scars.. my hedgehogs never even broke the skin when they bit me.

Dog all the way. Nothing can take it's place. Caged pets are cute and all but after a while you may as well have gotten some fish instead. Don't get me wrong, ferrets can be fun but they also can be lost. Get a dog and either get off your butt and walk it or get off your butt and put up a fence (or a radio collar).

Salt water aquarium. You don't have to deal with fur all over the place or the possibility to having an allergy to the animal. Low maintenance really compared to cats and dogs, you dont have to walk them and you can leave for a few days and notr have to hire a pet sitter or take them to a kennel. If they get sick you can let them die and just buy more. No expensive vet bills.. and the biggest reason. It is very relaxing to watch the fish swim around.

I guess it depends upon the bird. :idk: My roomies have a house full of pets. A pit, a kitteh, 2 spiders, a ferret, and 2 birds. Their birds are less maintainence than the ferret in their opinions.

I'll have to ask Shayne what kind of bird Jack is again. He's the best out of the two although he's an asshole. Among other things, he likes to do fly by's to unsuspecting people and then laughs if you duck. And he has an evil laugh. He's great!

Birds are icky nasty things...if she doesnt want to deal with an animal when you arent home, get something small in a cage...Im still on the flying squirrel, Sugar gliders! They do require socialization and interaction, but are tiny, easy to carry around while you are just putting around the house, and cute enough A might like it some.

My friend has 4 birds in a big enclosure in his downstairs living room. One is a big grey African Parrot, and the other is a yellow crested cockatoo. Then there is two smaller ones. The grey parrot is a bitch, he only will be handled by drew. The cockatoo will fly right up to your shoulder and sit there. He speaks as well! When she is hungry, she imitates drew's mom and says "Dreeewww, go feed the birds." She can do R2-D2, the cats meow, and the phone. He only has to clean the newspaper every couple days....

I've owned a dog before when I lived with my parents. I know how to care for animals, that isn't the issue. I definitely want another dog, but now is not the right time for one. Just trying to find something small. I would really like to try ferrets, but she doesn't want them. So I think I have it narrowed down to a bunny, chinchilla, or a guinea pig. Fish aren't "pets", they're living decorations.

Skunks are actually pretty neat, but given how they behave in the wild, they'd constantly be rooting around in your carpet and hiding under things.

Really? I love them, they arent that different from my little dog, and about the same size. The noise is a little freaky, but if you do the research you know what to expect.

I'd really be interested in a larger feline, like a lynx or bobcat, but 1) i love my dog and she's not on the menu and 2) permits are difficult to obtain

When I had to get rid of my boa, the guy at the pet store offered to trade it for a snow leopard kitten some douche nozzle had ordered but never picked up. I was tempted but figured it would be stretching the apt. complex's cat rule a bit.

oooooh, that would be awesome, but seeing as I am the size of a beast of prey for a cat that big, um no. Dog would be the appetizer, I'd end up the main course, unless I pulled a she-re and rode it around like a horse!

I never had a salt water tank but I had a 75 gallon African Cichlid tank. It wasn't hard to maintain once it was up and running. I'd do ~25% water change every other week. When I was gone I had one of those electric auto feeders. It worked great. I never had a fish die on me while I was gone.

I'm thinking about getting back into the hobby.

I loved my pet rabbit. The cage only needed to be cleaned about once a week, and was easy to take care of otherwise. If you go this route be sure to give it a couple days to get used to you before you handle it.. they like to bite when nervous. I had a wooden cage that was custom built for her and she loved it.. chewed the fucked thing like crazy though. My sisters also had rabbits, and they loved to socialize with each other and people.

My neighbor had a few guinie pigs, and they were cool. I loved to poke them to make them squeal, but I guess that can get annoying after a while.

My neighbors also had several birds. The big tropical parrots were bad ass, but kinda loud. The tiny cockatiels were all right and not obnoxiously loud. Over all they were easy to maintain with the right cages and food bowls.

When you guys say Beta, do you mean Fighter Fish? Because my sister and I had 2 and they were cool to look at. I had a decent size fresh water tank too, and that was a bitch to clean..

American alligators are actually about the best crocodilian you can raise. They are much more docile than, say, what I used to raise (spectacled caiman). American alligators are the ones you always see people holding in their laps without muzzles. Try that with a caiman, lose your fingers...

Plus, baby american alligators are beautiful. Only reason I never got one for myself is because they grow too large. I've been wanting to build an outdoor enclosure for one now that I have this property (and pond), but the wife worries about her pug. :panic:

I haven't had a reptile in the house since 2004... it's about time I got something new.

Thats interesting, from the little I have read the caimans were the prefered crocodilian since they stay small compared to an american gator. I saw a show a long time ago where a family had a prety much full grown american alligator that just wandered the house and was super tame.

I'll have to vote for the guinea pigs. Had them for most of my life, just love them to death. Clean the cage once a week, food and water every day. The best thing about them is you can leave for 2-3 days and no one has to look in on them.

small furry, not dog best I've had was ferret. second best was female rat. No biting at all from the rat. yeah I know the tail bothers people.

now I know you said no dogs but is there a chance you could put a pet door on the house and a outdoor kennel. my dog has her crate in the porch but she can go out into a 12 x 12 kennel I built for her. that way if I'm gone for 10 hours she still has mobility and potty breaks. then when i get home she gets to go run with me. Definitely don't let her run the house, she's a 50lb tornado when we're not home. LOL
otherwise how about a cat? that would probably be my second choice. after dog, then after cat would be ferret.

Caiman remain small (most no more than six feet), but are mean, angry bastards straight from the egg. No amount of handling ever tamed mine.

 And here I was thinking she was going to eat me. She didnt actually appear to be shedding, but as she was walking around on my hands and arms they were prickling my skin, making me itch and giving me a small case of hives...fascinating creatures tho.

My roomie has 2 tarantulas. I have a fear of spiders and keep saying that one of these days I'm going to get brave and hold one, hoping that will help alleviate my fear of them (it worked with snakes!). But he's an evil soul and when they molt, every once in a while he'll scare the fuck out of me with it.

I've reclaimed the house/garage for now. I found a black widow in the yard the other day, so they are starting to repopulate for spring. I think I have lost the crawl space under house til winter. That's too tight a space for me to try to fight them.

I suggest you never have kids because pets are waaaaaay easier to take care of. No joke. Pets don't lie, they never complain, that don't talk back to you, you only have to feed them once or twice a day and you never have to run your pet to football/soccer/boy scouts, tai kwon do/ school functions/birthday parties...... It never ends. Oh yeah and pets are cleaner than kids.

ah you've decided to get the best pet of all.....someone else's. leave at their house and go play with it now and then. leave it there when it's time to feed/clean/pick up after. Yeah I wish I would have gotten one of those. LOL

I'm not expecting kids to be easy. Having a kid is a shitload different than getting a pet. I know pet owners will freak out, but pets being family is horseshit. It's not the same and will never be the same. A kid is on a whole other field of play. I don't even see the point of comparing getting a pet to having a kid.

I'm not gonna freak out but I will say that depending on your mindset a pet can be part of the family or not. Just like you can truly accept an adopted/step sibling/child or not. Either you have the heart for it or you don't. My dog is the closest thing to a family that I have so he's my defacto son. I don't know if I'd love a real son more or not (I'd imagine that I would) but as of right now, there's nothing or no one I care about more... whatever that means.

I used to have pacus that would allow people to pet them (they'd float on their sides if you put your hand in the tank and sit there and let you pet 'em)

Try that with a trigger fish... you're likely to pull back a bloody stump.

Probably best that you've decided not to get any pets, then.

I have had many pets before. Yes, you can become quite attached to them, but they are not family. There is no substitute for a living breathing human.

Okay, it's all in your heart as I've said. Some people will never really accept a step-brother into their "family" either. It's all within each individual person.

It's not a question of heart. It's nature. Sorry, a pet will never replace human. It does not have the capacity a human has in the way we develop relationships. It will always will be the lower lifeform by it's very nature, never an equal.

eh, its not a fascination, but filling a need. if we are to have robots roaming free in a world built in, around and for humans, then the robots have to be able to function in that world, and hence resemble and move like us.

better examples would have been ships, or disney / pixar movies etc etc

There is nothing wrong or weird to have strong attachments to animals. There is a special bond between an owner and their pet. I just don't think it is the same type of bond that is possible between human family members.

I'm a big time rat lover as well. Have owned 7 of them including one Hairless (named Derma). They are very smart, rarely bite (only have been bit one time and I had peanut butter on my finger) and like to be handled. Only bad thing is the females tend to get tumors as they age and usually only live to 2-3yo.
