So remember that I was talking about netbooks and wanting one? Well, I stop at Walmart to pick up some milk on my way home and I spot this netbook with a $199 sign on it. I'm like, "no way!". So I corral a very reluctant employee to track down the keys to the case and sure enough it's the Acer Aspire one like at Att except without the sim card port. 160G HD, built in WiFi, weighs under 3 lbs, 1.6 processor, 1G DDR2, etc. Fucking Score!!! I've been playing with it and since it's Windows XP with 1G of ram, it's damn fast! WAY faster than my "good" laptop. Of course it doesn't have to deal with Vista and 100 other programs like my Dell does.

Obviously, the first thing I did was dowload a 1 1/2 hour movie from my GoPro.... hello, like 2 minutes! I think we have a winner! I'm gonna try it out for a week or so and see. Otherwise, there was a really nice piece at Best Buy for $300 with a 10" screen. Of course, there's always the "Evil Tigger" method of getting it from Radio Shack for $80, cancelling my contract with Att and kicking them their stupid $175 eary termination fee... it would still make that unit $255 which isn't too shabby since it retails for $400!

My husband just bought and Acer Net book as well. Not sure of the specs. He goes away a lot with the Navy and tends to take my laptop with him since it is smaller. He's managed to drop mine off his rack :( Didn't do any damage surprisingly considering he's a good 4 feet off the ground. In any case, the little net book is gonna be great for traveling. On our bikes, one vacations, everyday life. It's super light, compact and fast.

My wife and I each have the first generation of the Aspire One. We love them over all but both have experience a BIOS lock and would no longer start. In my case Staples simply swapped it out, My wife's wich was purchased at Walmart we had to send to Acer in Texas who will either fix swap us out a new one. Love the little bugger though fits in a tail bag nicely. The other bit of info that may be worth knowing is that the Phillips Portable DVD carrier ($27 at staples) Is a great t well armoured brief case that Everything that came in the ACER box will fit in. It is much more rugged than the unit that is sold specifically for the Acer (wife bought one) and about 1/3 the cost

Thanks! That's good info to have! I'm trying it out as I said and I like what I see so far! My only disappointment so far is I'm having trouble getting a blue tooth adapter to work with the thing. :idk: Other than that, I'm quite pleased. I've already installed Firefox and Picassa, plus afew videos to see how it would react. Not too shabby for a couple hundred bucks! The only thing I may miss is the ability to use it with a cellular service... Hey, it would look funny but if I get blue tooth to work and got unlimited data, I wonder if I could use Skype and only pay about $60/month for unlimited calls and internet.... hmmm....

TIGGER, I just set up an Aspire One for a prof yesterday. It's a nice little unit. I was impressed. For its size, it's a nice peice of kit. The screen is a little restrictive but for someone who actually needs portable computing, rather than a folding desktop unit, it's a pretty good deal. Good find.

that is why I want one. I'd want one with SSD though. I don't think you would have to worry about HD crashes or vibration as much packing it around.

God Rae, you are so damn smart! That's exactly why I bought it! It was either this or an external hard drive that I could download sd cards into. If I bought a 1T HD and a case that accepted memory cards, it would have cost about....$200.:idk: This thing is cool but I still have my reservations. I'm almost totally buying it for the rally and I'm not sure that I have any use for it beyond that. I already have two lap tops as it is!

Yea you just described my lap tops... Hell, it was worse when I had the XPS 2010, I hated even moving that thing across the room! Right now, I'm just wondering if I'll miss not having built in 3G... of course, I can always just get an aircard. Oh for anyone that is interested, the Acer that takes a sim card will take virtually any sim, so you are not restricted to ATT.

Yea, I looked at the units with SD/flash HD but they only have about 32G. Of course, that's probably enough storage and you can buy an external HD but then what makes it less vulnerable? I mean supposedly all laptops were meant to be portable right?

ATT is smart on this one. Being first is rarely a bad thing. Heck, I was on their site and I can get the netbook and an HTC Touch FUZE (refurb) for $100 with the $100 rebate. Heck, they have refurb. IPhones for $100 as well.

well, I haven't looked for a site for modding the Acer but I have found one for the Eee PC. you wouldn't believe what they do to those things. touch screens, just about all the added storage you can cram into them, GPS, bluetooth it goes on and on.

I've seen the touchscreen kits, pretty sweet! If I were to do that, I'd like one that turns into a tablet.

Yea sure, you can have it the entire trip if you want, I'm not gonna have much use for the internet while I'm at the rally considering I won't want to "E-buy" anything and you all will be with me!

Nah, you'd have to get an external drive. If this was my only computer, I'd get one but I'm not sure why I'd have to have one on the road. FYI Radio Shack has an external DVD burner for $70.

When our business building went online, I was on point. To this day I don't know if it was moving 200 desks that were placed to close to the wall or carrying around my Latitude D830 around for 2 weeks that made me miss 2 days of work, with a thrown out back.

So the same 3G that ATT's phones use (or something better) is what is being used to connect this netbook? That's all I wanted to know. Something like this would be nice if it holds up to abuse on the road.

I gotta say that this thing works rather well. I may be biased because my favorite laptop has issues right now and I don't really feel like calling "Bob" in India to sort it out. :panic:

I have a buddy that just offered to loan me his trailer for free and a hitch is $159 installed for my car...:idk: Then I could bring my laptop, Rogue's jacket, My leathers pants and whatever else I need without spending another $100-200 on bike luggage I'll never use again.

yeah I went and got one... updating it right now... I like it... as Rae said... it's perfect for on road trips and take'n pictures! kick ass...

my Toshibia seems to be work'n again... naturally... but I'm gonna wipe it out and give it to my bro I think... the only reason I had it was for the portability... and being it was a 17"... not the greatest in that aspect.

thanks for the find tigg...

No problem. That's great actually because I don't travel like you guys and I've been thinking about running mine back to the store. It definitely a nice piece...have you used the web cam yet? But I hate typing on it with my big clumsy paws! Besides, if I tow I'll have plenty of room for my 17" lap top. Funny, to get my car "tow ready" is gonna cost about the same as the netbook. Do I need a hitch or do I need another computer?

naw haven't used the web cam... but it's all good... the only reason I need a laptop is for pictures and internet access... don't care about anything else... gonna probably strip this one down... no need for office or all the extra bs programs...

still undecided if I'll put lightroom on it... it'd make it much easier to export the photos to my website... but may slow it down too much for my liking... :idk:♠

WOAH!!!

yeah... though even uninstalling some programs still leaves things in the registry... I'm sure adobe does this to get by people installing the 30day trial... then uninstalling and reinstalling at day 31.
but I did install it... and firefox. deleting most everything else I think. no use for it.
