believe it or not that's the boss. She's a whopping 4 lb poodle. Of course she is also the set up man for any would be intruder. "oh how cute sounds like they have an ankle nipper" Boxer just waits quietly by the door waiting for it to open. Poodle going off like a car alarm that shits.

So when do Boxers start to fill out? My 8 month old is getting tall but he still looks like a puppy.

mine is 2 1/2 and she is starting to get wider. After about 1 1/2 yr she started looking kind of impressive. Depends I think on their body style. Some males especially are huge (90 lb) and some I've seen were even smaller then my female. (she goes 50-55 lb)
I don't know how much affect it has on their body size but muscle wise she has 3 acres to run around in and she uses it all plus we walk at night for a 2 - 3 mile walk. That seems to keep her muscle toned up pretty well. When she is running after you it's prety impressive for as small as she is.
Sitting still like that I think she still looks like a little puppy. LOL

My boxer is 55lbs now and he still has some growing to do. I expect he will probably top out around 70-75.

 Very cute. I had a similar set up several years ago. Jake a 10 lb. Min Pin was my early warning system. He was six months older and in charge of Kayla my 90 lb. female Rottie. What a pair...I miss those pups.

yeah the poodle thought it was cute when we brought home the new puppy. She was motherly with her. Suddenly the new pup was twice her size. It's been game on since then.

My 2 boxers are 6 and 4 now - they finish filling out around 3 or so. And start to settle down around then too. Our 6 year old is having hip issues now and really slowing down :(
4 year old is 65 lbs or so and the 6 year old is big: 82 lbs of pure muscle!!

man I can't wait for the whole settling down thing to happen. a junkie on speed has nothing on this dog. She will go forever and a day at mach 2.

both of ours were like that - the 4 year old can finally come into a room do a few circles and then sit and watch rather than weave in between my legs endlessly. Makes for a much nicer time than me scolding him when I trip and hit the ground.

My boxer/mastiff mix is 2 years and is starting to put on the width finally. He's been tall and skinny since he was 8 months old but now he's starting to widen and thicken up. Not an ounce of fat on him though!

Hey wildchild, btw, if you want her to be in chill mode in the house before she gets to be older just give her a job to do in addition to your nightly walk. I live in an apt with my three dogs....if they acted hyper indoors I'd have to cut their heads off! I let them wrestle every once and a while but they are not allowed to run around and get under my feet. Even with company over they are very calm inside...jethro has been that way since he was 1 year old.

Well Boxers are working dogs so they need to work. I'm a firm believer than any dog can behave any way you want them to regardless of age or breed. I'll just use my Boxer Jethro as an example.
My Dad got Jethro as a puppy to be a member of his two Boxer pack. After that cute little puppy stage Jethro became increasingly hyper and uncontrollable and developed destructive behaviors and extreme dog/animal aggression. He was so out of control that you couldn't even pet him because he would be all over you. The last straw came when he ate $3,000 worth of patio furniture. I offered to take him and "fix" him. Of course once we bonded Dad would've had to have killed me to get him back!
Jethro is extremely fast, more so than some greyhounds even. He LOVES to run...so I put him to work running. He pulls me on rollerblades or he pulls a cart with kids in it. I coupled that with structured walks and discipline. After a couple of months he was a completely different dog. The kind of dog that people say, "OMG, he's so well behaved, what do you do?" Everything we do is an exercise in calmness. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE to roughhouse with him and slam him on the ground and suplex him and let him chase me and so on....but only on my terms.

For my lab I chose the obvious and put her to work as a retriever. But not just a free for all, it has to be a structured working retrieve. I steadily increased the challenge and have her to the point where I can chunk a ball across the Trinity River while she's in a sit stay. After a couple minutes I release her and she brings it back.
Your dog's job could depend on what he likes to do and what you like to do. Keep it positive, and enjoyable and ratchet up the challenge. Jethro is to the point where he can pull me miles on end (9 miles is our record) without me ever having to skate.
You mentioned having a lot of land, which is great...but if your Boxer is like mine no amount of running around all day will drain her energy. She needs a challenge and a job to satisfy the need that we have bred into her as a working animal. Much like a police dog, the bond you develop with a dog that "works" for you is just incredible.

she does have one small job which is to round up the poodle if she leaves the yard. Funny the poodle is def the A dog but when she leaves the yard that is when the Boxer gets to "be boss". She runs her down and herds her back into the yard.
May have to come up with some other tasks for her. We have considered agility training but it would take a big committment from me as well.

Agility is a great job, my lab does that as well but the boxer hasn't shown a lot of interest.
Jethro is actually an excellent cattle herder and would love for that to be his job but we don't live on a farm or anything. I think it'll take a bit more than herding your poodle to do the trick though!! LOL.
