These are pics of the first flight for the P-8A. The plane took of from the Boeing factory in Renton, WA, flew for 3 1/2 hours and landed at Boeing Field in Seattle. The airports are about 5 miles apart as the crow flies.

Sweet. I love airplane stuff.

Since I'm sure someone else will ask, and I did too.

"The P-8A Poseidon is a long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft. It possesses an advanced mission system that ensures maximum interoperability in the future battle space. Capable of broad-area maritime, and littoral operations, the P-8A will influence how the U.S. Navy's maritime patrol and reconnaissance forces train, operate and deploy."

More info here (http://www.boeing.com/defense-space/military/p8a/index.html).

What a crappy looking 737.

Ah for the days when the Navy allowed nose art

That is aircraft T-1. I had some pics of T-2 out of the paint shop emailed to me but I deleted them. I'll try to dig them up again.

Ooooh, fun!

I don't think I will ever stop being amazed by planes. They are just the coolest things on the planet. Really.

Interesting wingtip design. Looks like it was taken from the 787.

the website I looked up on it said it had a fuselage from a 737-800 and the wings from a 737-900.

Kinda sad to see the P-3 head off but I guess this new one has better range, more speed and more toys.

Wikipedia said something similar, but stated the P-8 uses raked wingtips similar to the 767-400ER instead of 737 style blended winglets. I must not have seen a 767-400ER before since the only aircraft I associate that wing design with is the 787. It is a distinctive feature I probably would have remembered.

Aren't those planes supposed to have a big fucking radar thing on top?

(Sorry for all the complex terminology, I got carried away.)

since when is poop end not a layman's term?

It was sarcasm. "Fucking radar thing" isn't exactly a technical term either.

dipping sonar = helos.

Those fuckers tend to trail a looooong ass pencil lead thin antenna to pick up RF and variations in the earths magnetic field (ie, something aint right cause there's a big fucking piece of metal (submarine) near them).

Bro did lots of work on P3's and BBJ's (737 Business Jet). Love seeing the new P8's.... but yeah, P3's have been a workhorse for a *long* time

That is a t-33 chase plane that escorted the P-8A on its maiden flight.

Very cool.

I worked in the aviation department of my company for a couple of years as a property manager for the hangar.

I never feared flying until I went to work there and got to know and hangout with some of the pilots...lineservice guys and mechanics.

Yeah they are almost identical. The t-33 was based on the P80

I noticed the P-80/T-33, and was also wondering if it was someones private jet or not.

I thought the pooper was a magnetometer, and you figured out the radar thingy....

i had a nice little post about how it was basically the same thing but my train got underground before i could finish  still, im surprised its still being used professionally. metal in that airframe has got to be pretty tired. Id much more expect to see a t-38 in there

Nose art would be pretty damn cool. But when you are bombing a muslim terrorist you have to think of their feelings and can't have them dying with the last image of a naked woman. It's just offensive.

I can see the report now: "Care to tell us again why you taxi'd off the runway and into the grass?"

"Well, sir, there was this REALLY hot 737...."

We built the fuselages for the P-8A's here at Spirit Aerosystems....what a fucking pain in the ass, they were....they went down the 737 line and had both lines fucked up for MONTHS. Out of sequence work....travel work...all kinds of nightmares.

We build the forward fuselage (section 41) for the new 787 too....It should first flight in the next couple of months....I wish that I could post pics from the CFF....unbelievable technology over there as they wind/cook those tubes. Pretty cool technology in the Dreamlifter too....it's bizarre to see an entire forward fuselage being stuffed into a heavily modified 747.

I never feared flying until my husband got into it and he tells me some of the dumb ass things his fellow students and instructors do. :panic: I don't have as much faith that my pilots have been trained properly anymore.
