Could Verizon learned from mistakes and take AT&T to the woodshed? The iphone exclusivity is AT&T's only hope.

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/patterson/48295

Well, looks like something's definitely up between Apple and Verizon Wireless. First came Monday's piece from USA Today claiming that Verizon could get an iPhone as early as next year, and now both BusinessWeek and the New York Times are reporting that Apple and Verzion are in talks—possibly about an "iPhone lite" and a touchscreen "media pad." What gives?
I admit, I was highly skeptical of yesterday's report from USA Today claiming that Verizon and Apple are in "high-level" talks about bringing the iPhone to "America's most reliable network."

But later on Monday, BusinessWeek published a post detailing the talks, which (it claims) involve "two new iPhone-like devices," including "a smaller, less expensive calling deivce"—an "iPhone lite," according to an anonymous source—and a "media pad" with the potential to "shake up the tech industry."

A few hours later, the New York Times chimed in, confirming that Apple and Verizon execs were in "high-level" discussions to "sell a version of the iPhone" (they key word is "version," I'm guessing) that "would work on Verizon's network."

Even more interesting, the Times' (anonymous, again) source said it "is not out of the question" that the device would work on Verizon's "current" CDMA network, which acting Apple CEO Tim Cook recently noted "doesn't really have a life to it after a certain point in time." (Verizon is slated to migrate to a new, faster network—known as LTE—starting next year, as is GSM-based AT&T, although it'll take years for the carriers to fully roll out the new networks.)

As for the mystery devices (only in prototype stages, apparently), BusinessWeek had the best (though still unconfirmed) details.

The "iPhone lite" would be a "less expensive device" that's "thinner and smaller" than the current iPhone BW reports. Under the hood would be a new, integrated "system on a chip" that would lower manufacturing costs.

More exciting would be the "media pad," a device that's smaller than the Kindle but armed with a larger touchscreen "that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos" and would "place calls over a Wi-Fi connection," BW claims, adding that at least one of the devices could arrive "as early as this summer."

That's pretty much the "what" of the reported Verizon-Apple talks. Then there's the question of "why?"

Possible reasons (as culled from the BW and NYT stories): Apple is using the Verizon discussions merely as a plot to wring better terms out of AT&T, which is reportedly in talks to extend its iPhone exclusivity deal with Apple to 2011.

Another possibility: Apple would give the new iPhone-type devices to Verizon in exchange for Verizon not taking on the widely anticipated Palm Pre, which (for now) will only be available on Sprint.

Both the Times and BusinessWeek caution that while talks between Apple and Verizon have "heated up" in the past few weeks, "no deal is imminent" and talks could easily break down. Verizon, of course, famously passed on the iPhone before AT&T made its deal with Apple.

Personally, I'm still trying to make sense of all the news. Apple's strategy all along has been to make "one phone for the entire world," and most of the world (including AT&T and T-Mobile) uses GSM networks. Verizon (along with Sprint) is using CDMA, a wireless technology that's facing obsolescence as Verizon preps for LTE and Sprint toys with WiMax (a 4G technology based on Wi-Fi).

And while Verizon will have its first few LTE markets ready by 2010, I have a hard time believing that Apple would release a device either this year or next that would only work in a few select areas of the country. (Once LTE takes off, it'll be a differenct story, but that won't happen until at least 2011.)

And if the rumored "media pad" (which sounds a lot like the Apple tablet everyone's been buzzing about) makes calls through Wi-Fi, well … why wouldn't Apple just sell it directly, rather than going through a cellular carrier?

In any case, based on all the stories cropping up, it's clear that something's afoot—and while bringing the iPhone (or "iPhone-like" devices) to Verizon now might be a strange strategic movie for Apple, it would be great for U.S. consumers, who would finally have another option for getting the iPhone. Stay tuned.

yeah, i am thinking this is apple trying to keep the pre out of more people's hands. The pre on verizon could stop some people from going to AT&T.

We really need a network more like europe, where the phones are open to every network. Damn this CDMA/GSM war. Thank god LTE is coming for everyone.

yeah, i couldnt either, that's why I went BB Storm. I love the BB storm and it does a lot more for me than the iphone will do as far as business. Hell even Steve Wezniak (sp?) uses a blackberry for business and he is the fucking apple cofounder.

I played with a couple peoples' Storms, and it wasn't for me. The whole thing with the entire screen clicking.. that would take me a long time to get used to, especially when it comes to texting. I wasn't a huge fan.

But to each their own. :idk:

It's not for everyone, but the storm's basic blackberry software is similar on all the bb devices and they rawk if you are forced to go to a shit load of meetings and have a lot of business shit to keep track off.

Verizons version will be the regular iPhone with all the features disabled. You'll have to upgrade your plan to get the touchscreen to work, 6the only way to get pictures or whatever else is on the phone off of it will be through the use of Verizon specific software and hardware.

Verizon has actually finally started listening to people about getting hands off with this. The blackberry storm's OS is the same as other euro networks OS. It's fully featured and allows a lot more than a lot of their older phones. I think they are finally moving in the direction of more unlocked phones hopefully. I think the iphone mistake finally made them realize how freakin retarded it was too lose that many customers because they wanted to lock up their phones.

Verizon Said to Be in Talks With Microsoft for Rival to IPhone
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Amy Thomson and Dina Bass

April 29 (Bloomberg) -- Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile-phone company, has held talks with Microsoft Corp. about offering a handset that may include the Zune music-player software, a person familiar with the matter said.

The phone may be introduced next year, said the person, who declined to be identified because the talks are in the early stages. Verizon is also talking with Apple Inc. about selling a version of the iPhone, potentially giving the carrier access to the best-selling consumer handset, the person said yesterday.

Apple and Microsoft, which already compete in operating systems for personal computers, are jockeying for partners that can help them sell more wireless devices and software. Verizon and AT&T Inc. are fighting to offer the latest handsets, which help boost revenue from data services such as video and music downloads.

Brenda Raney, a spokeswoman for Basking Ridge, New Jersey- based Verizon Wireless, declined to comment. Greg Sullivan, group product manager in Microsoft’s mobile business, also declined to comment on any talks. Apple’s Natalie Kerris wouldn’t comment on any discussions with Verizon.

Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, plans to put the Zune software on mobile phones from various manufacturers and carriers, Andy Lees, senior vice president of the company’s mobile business, said in February. The Redmond, Washington-based company isn’t building a Zune phone itself, he said at the time.

IPhone Competition

Lees said last month that Microsoft wants to work with handset makers and carriers to bring less expensive devices to market with features similar to those of the iPhone.

Microsoft is probably developing so-called reference designs, or guidelines to be followed by handset manufacturers, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland, Washington-based research firm. That would let Microsoft play a role in designing the hardware and software -- helping it match features such as the iPhone’s touch screen, he said.

Microsoft said in an e-mailed statement that its strategy hasn’t changed and that the company works with many mobile operators and handset makers.

A deal between Apple and Verizon would allow Apple to reach more customers in the U.S. and sign up people who don’t want to use AT&T service. AT&T has been the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone since its debut in 2007.

Verizon isn’t planning an iPhone for its current network, which uses code-division multiple access technology, the person said. The standard isn’t widely used overseas, limiting its appeal for Apple. Verizon probably will offer the phone on networks using its new Long-Term Evolution standard, which offers faster data speeds, according to UBS AG analyst John Hodulik in New York.

Cook Meeting

Verizon Wireless Chief Executive Officer Lowell McAdam met face-to-face with Apple Operating Chief Tim Cook about a month ago to discuss a Verizon-powered iPhone, the person said. There have been no further talks since the two met, and no firm plans for a phone are in place, the person said.

Cook said last week that Apple is “very happy” with AT&T, and that Verizon’s older CDMA network “doesn’t really have a life to it after a point in time.”

Cook, filling in while Apple CEO Steve Jobs is on medical leave, didn’t respond to an e-mail seeking comment, and Kerris said he wasn’t available for an interview.

“We are thrilled with the iPhone and delighted with the partnership,” said Mark Siegel, an AT&T spokesman. He declined to comment on any phone being offered by Verizon, calling it speculation.

Verizon Communications Inc., which co-owns Verizon Wireless with Vodafone Group Plc, rose 42 cents to $30.96 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Apple, based in Cupertino, California, dropped 83 cents to $123.90 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft declined 47 cents to $19.93.

ive also heard rumors of a sony PSP-phone which could wildly swing my decisions if true

Well as you all know, the PSP already makes phone calls through Skype. If the new PSP-3000 had been blue tooth and been touchscreen, I'd have bought it even though I just got the GoW PSP-2000 last year.

I've been reading rumors that the Apple/Verizon project will be an Apple Netbook with some of the touch screen stuff built in and internet access coming through Verizon's network, rather than a reinvisioned iPhone.

That looks pretty sweet. Dual analog is completely necessary on a PSP. I bought a PSP when they first came out and played it a little here and there, then ended up selling it. The games were lame when it came out. Last year I bought a 3000 thinking things have changed for the better. Except for Patapon (and Patapon 2 coming out next month!) and FFVII Crisis Core, it's the same problem. The games that should kick ass end up blowing dick because of control issues. They're either clunky with crap controls, or super clunky with rigged controls that use the face buttons to do a mock d-pad set up. If they put dual analogs on the next PSP, I'm there.

it really depends on the game. Ace combat was sweet on the psp. Psone classics also work quite well. I was playing the shit out of metal gear solid until the constant japanese babbling on the codec nearly drove me insane. Im eagerly awaiting a us release

I agree that it depends on the games. I've been playing all the old Neo Geo titles lately. Metal Slug and Last Resort FTW! I liked God of War as well, even though it was a bit of a button masher. To be honest, I'm not trying to play anything too complicated on a hand held. IMHO hand helds are just for fun!

Came out on PS2 also. It shouldn't be too hard to port over. Street Fighter Alpha 4 and Guilty Gear X have the same graphics and look and play excellent on the PSP. It's something of a collectible for some reason. Lucky me, I still have my copy!
