View Full Version : Swine Sars!

So dunno if a lot of you know where Nova Scotia is on a map. I know G-REX will. But in any case, our little province holds 4 cases of confirmed swine flu. And day by day and I can just see how much my job is going to suck more than normal as I work as an RN in our province's largest Emerg.

The other day, we ran out of isolation gowns in the whole hospital. So I couldn't even protect myself from people that don't have swine flu but other infectious goodies.

The little town where the 4 cases are confirmed (all students as a boarding school that went to Mexico for an exchanged) is suffering from stretched medical resources, cancelations of events/business, etc....

And the idiots that are showing up the various emerg's are in full effect. One patient came in b/c they had "talked" over the phone to someone in Mexico.

Anyway... I hope this doesn't get crazy b/c being pregnant and an working in an ER is a little scary. Only b/c it's not been discovered why seemingly younger, healthier Mexicans are dying of this mild flu. Usually takes older, really young and immuno suppressed patients.

It's going to be a world wide problem. Great for the disposable gown companies. We have ones that can be laundered and disposable. The initial days of the "outbreak" just put a strain on the existing resources b/c more people were freaking and heading to the hospitals to be examined. They've actually set up a "flu assessment" clinic in the little town to take the strain of their ER. It's been stressed they people who think they might be sick to stay home and not go to hospitals unless they are having real trouble breathing etc... They'll just over burden the ER's and place other's at risk.

People wearing masks all day long, when not in the health care setting or dealing with certain populations of people just look silly. Hand washing and covering your mouth is still the best practice.

I wouldn't be traveling to Mexico any time soon though and I'm a little worried about flying on a plane - only b/c the constant circulating air gets me sick every time regardless if they have a hepa-filter in airplane.

I'm so confused by all of this. It's the flu. There's a flu outbreak every year - flu shots, flu panic - why is this one different? mexico just admited that it wasn't 150 dead from swine flu, it's 7. Why is the whole world in an uproar over the flu. I just don't understand. in the US it's 91 cases of "swine flu" and 1 death. That doesn't sound out of line with years past - infants and old people are more suseptible but there is a vaccination for those highest at risk? Am I missing something? Not trying to debate it or anything but as someone who's never had a flu shot or the flu or known anyone who's HAD the flu of any kind....wtf am I missing about this??

It's a new strain.. the news claims it's supposedly a hybrid of sorts between human, swine, and avian influenza.

Like Kirsty said.. it's not just the really young, the really old, or the immune-suppressed who are dying, but healthy, normal people too. Not to mention it's something that can hop species (which, really, is only scary when you're talking AIDS or ebola, but you know..).

All that said... the news is blowing things out of proportion a bit because they like the sensationalism. Yes, it's important to be aware of new strains, good hygiene is important, but this is true for ANYTHING...

It's not something to freak out about, but still something to be aware of and a good reminder to STAY HOME if you're sick. Too many people (myself included..) try to tough it out because of the stigma of taking sick days. :idk:

No vaccination.

Right. Vaccines can be made, but they take time and testing to make sure they're safe. Regular flu vaccines will not make you immune to every strain of regular flu other than the one you were vaccinated against.. much less a different class of flu altogether.

in the press release in WA the concern was "only 18,000 doses" of the vaccination.
and I've never bought into the whole flu vaccination thing in the first place. I guess that's where I'm missing the point. Anyone I've talked to who's gotten vaccinated in the past not only got the flu still but was MORE ill than those who didn't get vaccinated. Why not get the flu, hang out with a box of tissues, a couple of movies, sleep it off and move on?

from the CDC:
CDC Recommendation
CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses.

•Oseltamivir (brand name Tamiflu ®) is approved to both treat and prevent influenza A and B virus infection in people one year of age and older.
•Zanamivir (brand name Relenza ®) is approved to treat influenza A and B virus infection in people 7 years and older and to prevent influenza A and B virus infection in people 5 years and older.

Updated today:
29 April 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 18:00 GMT, 29 April 2009, nine countries have officially reported 148 cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection. The United States Government has reported 91 laboratory confirmed human cases, with one death. Mexico has reported 26 confirmed human cases of infection including seven deaths.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (13), Germany (3), Israel (2), New Zealand (3), Spain (4) and the United Kingdom (5).

I'm so tired of the goddamned media turning everything into a crisis of Biblical proportions. Yes, it's nice to hear something other than Mortgage Meltdown (tm) for a change, but this is just stupid.

Last night our local news was airing a very earnest discussion on how to avoid catching the flu on the subway... Um, there aren't any subways (other than the sandwich-peddling kind) in 300 miles.

Laura, slow down

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/antiviral_swine.htm

There are four influenza antiviral drugs approved for use in the United States (oseltamivir, zanamivir, amantadine and rimantadine). The swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses that have been detected in humans in the United States and Mexico are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine so these drugs will not work against these swine influenza viruses. Laboratory testing on these swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses so far indicate that they are susceptible (sensitive) to oseltamivir and zanamivir.

Let me preface this by saying I am not in healthcare or medicine at all. This is just what I have picked up from reading, but you have it for the most part. It seems the biggest fear about this flu, and one rarely mentioned and never explained by the media, is that it may not be in line with most flus as far as infants, old people, and the sick being most susceptible. Very occasionally there are disease strains that cause the immune system to freak out, become unregulated, and cause further illness or death of the patient. In these cases a healthy immune system can do more harm than good.

With all flu strains (and really any virus) the #1 thing that snuffs it out is the human immune system. We do have things now available that help it, better treatment, anti-virals, etc. but the human immune system does the heavy lifting. The panic comes from the possibility that a strain will come along where the immune system doesn't work.

The last time that happened on a large scale was in 1918 with the Spanish flu. Being 1918 and all the records kind of suck but it is estimated to have killed somewhere between 20 and 50 million people worldwide. The difference between then and now, as I see it, is in 1918 the richest person in the world could not get treatment similar to what is even basic treatment today in the western world. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but you can probably get better treatment from an ambulance than what was available in 1918. When a disease like that does come around again the death toll will be massive, but it will most likely be heavily concentrated in developing countries lacking modern medical facilities.

Like I said, I have no medical training at all. If someone has more accurate information please correct me.

There's not enough approved vaccinations to go around - takes time to make these things... So, if this flu becomes wide spread that's a huge issue. Especially if it's affecting healthier populations of people.

And I know a lot of people say they get the "flu" from the flu shot and are more sick if they have received it - from taking care of people with the full blown flu, generally, those people that make those statements don't have the flu. They have a cold - and they run the risk of infecting someone else that can't defend themselves immune wise.

The flu in itself isn't deadly unless you are older, younger or sick that it causes severe respiratory compromise, issues with dehydration/organ failure related to fever etc....

But if younger, seemingly healthier people are dying due to this "mild" flu and they dont have any underlying chronic/acute diseases.... then yeah, people should be a little concerned.

Things will be blown out of proportion, but from a health care stand point and knowing how difficult things will be if people don't take this a bit serious.... It could be bad.

Kinda hard to do if you give it in the deltoid where you should.

Something like that is most likely from poor injection technique vs the flu vaccination itself.

My daughter is a pharmacy tech and she said people are absolutely in-fucking-sane with paranoia to the point that they have sold out of all of the Tamaflu that they had because people are getting it "just in case." They have also sold out of all of their masks (you know the freaky things that Michael Jackson likes to wear as a fashion accesory) for the same reason.

We have had 4 confirmed cases, last I heard, here in AZ. And we have people here driving home every weekend to see their family in Mexico. :idk: All of the cases have been grade school kids which kind of makes sense since they probably aren't as vigilant about hand washing as they should be. The funny thing is the people scooping up all the masks at Home Depot thinking that they're going to do anything to help. Besides blocking large, particulate matter, they're useless against any microscopic particles. Even the the shit in the hospital isn't fine enough to block the transmission of the flu. Fucking placebo FTMFL. And now the reports are coming in that it lacks specific proteins for rapid duplication. Surprise, we've been duped again by moronic news programs looking for this years panic story.

And for fuck's sake, less than 350 cases out of 6.7 billion people. Even if they're under reporting, the percentage of people with this retard flu is microscopic. Again, there's a greater danger out there:

This whole thing is asinine. The numbers are low, but everybody has to fucking panic like it's the end of days. Let's see, wash your filthy hands, don't suck on the face of a mexican, and if you get a cough, buy some Tamiflu. Swine Flu problem solved. We've got about the same number of deaths from this retard flu as we do from bee stings. Where's the general outrage and paranoia over real shit? How about some awareness and respect to something really dangerous, like MRSA or VRSA? Oooooooh, right, it doesn't have a sexy news name that newscasters can put up a fancy graphic and add ominous music to. God, we're fucking paranoid idiots. I can't wait until some idiot swimming in Florida gets bit by a shark and the news jumps back on their annual "Menace in the Ocean" kick. At least the footage of mangled flesh is more entertaining to watch.

more fun to fix too, the mangaled flesh that is. I am starting a string of 4 straight nights so this should be real interesting. had one the other night who worked at a local airport and was washing aplane then vomited a few times so was sent here to be checked for swine flu.

IOM TT: Swine flu to halt TT races?
By Visordown News
'It's too early to decide' says Isle of Man Chief Minister

THE ISLE of Man's Chief Minister, Tony Brown, has said that it's 'too early' to decide whether the outbreak of swine flu will put a halt to this year's Isle of Man TT.
At a press conference Mr Brown said: "Like every country around the world we are taking appropriate precautions in terms of giving the public advice as to what they should do. We want to give confidence now to the people of the Isle of Man that the Isle of Man Government is conscious to the potential of a pandemic and has been preparing for that."

When asked specifically about the running of this year's races, the Minister admitted it was 'too early to say'.

"It's important that we don't move too quickly on that and make decisions that we shouldn't make. But at the moment the TT is going ahead."

Earlier this week, Visordown exclusively revealed that eight-time motorcycle World Champion Valentino Rossi is to visit the Island during TT fortnight.

In the 1918 epidemic, roughly 675,000 Americans died of Spanish Flu. The population of America was about 105,000,000 at the time, so it killed less than 1% of the population. Anyone who states unequivocally that one in 10 Americans would die from a strain of flu that is vulnerable to modern antivirals, even taking into account the massively higher population densities, has been playing football without a helmet far too often.

Lots of stupid fuckheads in the ER these past two nights. Plenty of "flu like symptoms" that turn out to be nothing but stupidity and paranoia. Thank god these people are clogging our ER, because god forbid we actually work on somebody else with a real problem, like maybe heart failure, stroke, or pneumonia. The worst part is the disgust in these peoples' eyes when the doctors tell them they're fine. I'm starting to think that the people coming to our ER want to have swine flu.

4 May 2009 -- As of 06:00 GMT, 4 May 2009, 20 countries have officially reported 985 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection.

Mexico has reported 590 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 25 deaths. The higher number of cases from Mexico reflects ongoing testing of previously collected specimens. The United States has reported 226 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (85), China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1), Costa Rica (1), Colombia (1), Denmark (1), El Salvador (2), France (2), Germany (8), Ireland (1), Israel (3), Italy (1), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (4), Republic of Korea (1), Spain (40), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (15).

There is no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products.

It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders.

It really isn't newsworthy yet. Everyone has been looking for the next pandemic and the Spanish Flu killed millions. The problem is that we don't really get news anymore, we get whatever the media outlets think will boost rating and, thereby, their ad revenues.

You should look at the statistics for deaths that occur every year during the regular flu season.
