Scotty Bowman trying to keep low profile

CHICAGO (AP)—Scotty Bowman’s imprint on the Detroit Red Wings stretches back 15 years. It includes three Stanley Cup titles during nine seasons as coach and a stint as a consultant that was capped by another championship a year ago.

Bowman left the franchise he helped shape to join the Chicago Blackhawks as an adviser and be with his son. Stan Bowman, in his eighth season as Chicago’s assistant general manager, is in remission after battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma the last two years.

Scotty Bowman said being close to his son has been a “top-notch” experience.

It’s also put him on the other side of one of the NHL’s oldest rivalries.

Bowman’s vast knowledge of all things hockey—the Hall of Famer has coached nine Stanley Cup winners and been a part of two others—could now help the young Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals against the Red Wings.

Bowman, however, isn’t giving unsolicited advice to coach Joel Quenneville.

“I know all their trends and stuff, but at the same time he’s got to run his own stuff,” Bowman said on Saturday before the Blackhawks left for Detroit, where Game 1 is Sunday.

“You can always get information. You have to process it. That’s basically what you have to do.”

But Quenneville made it clear that Bowman’s presence has been a bonus as Chicago heads into its first conference final since 1995.

“He’s been good to have around the first two rounds, too,” Quenneville said Saturday. “… He’s good and a lot more familiar with these guys than other teams, as well. He’s going to be useful in a lot of ways.”

This season has seen the league’s youngest team emerge as a force again after missing the playoffs for most of the last decade.

“I’m surprised, but at the same time the experience they are acquiring with each and every game and series is huge,” Bowman said. “I don’t see the team changing a lot. You have to add all the time, but this is a pretty young group.”

Bowman’s assessments are highly regarded and so are his observations

Detroit coach Mike Babcock knows that Bowman can be a huge asset in preparations.

“Scotty is a book of knowledge,” Babcock said on Saturday. “No. 1, he’s got to be willing to share with you. No. 2, you got to want it.”

Red Wings veteran Chris Chelios(notes) spent nine years with the Blackhawks and credited his old team for bringing Bowman aboard.

“Scotty knows everything,” he said. “It was just another good move Chicago made, acquiring him.”

Bowman said he’s tried to keep out of the way this season. And when he returns to Detroit, he’s going to stay under the radar if possible, despite all his old acquaintances.

“I’m going to stay low,” he said. “I’m not going to hang out. I’m not on a goodwill tour or anything like that. I’ll see them after and maybe before (games), but not during.”

The Wings have been shelling him. Their average shots on goal/game is one of the highest in the NHL. The more shots you take, the more goal you are going to make. Fluery is good goalie, but the Wings are the best team the Pens have seen all year. So giving up lots of goals is expected. What wasn't expected was the Wings completely shutting down Malkin and Crosby in game 5.

Your on Acid if you think the Pens are a better team than Boston.

For hockey, Detroit is. The rest of the Detroit sports teams blow goats. Detroit is known for having the best playing surface in the league. Pittsburgh is known for having one of the worst. Reason being is the Wings have to money to properly maintain the arena floor. Why do they have the money? Fan support. Why do they have that fan support? Because they are a very good team year in year out. Can you remember the last time the Wings didn't make it to the playoffs?

Boston lost didn't they? They clearly were not the best team in the east. If they were they'd be in the finals. The team with the best regular season record is NOT the best team. I think Anaheim showed that when they beat San Jose in the first round.

The better team doesn't always win the game or series or championship. That's why there are these things in the sports world we like to call upsets. Winning the long drawn out regular season (assuming you have a decent schedule, not something like a college football fluff schedule, which really doesn't apply in pro sports) is more impressive than pulling to together a short winning streak in the playoffs.

Playoffs just gets the glory though.

And if you wanna throw Stats Down, The Flyers have made the playoffs Every year since 95 (I think) except for 05' and 07' So Blow me Mr My team has a huge fanbase and money blah blah blah...Come to philly and watch a flyers game, its NOTHING compared to a Detroit game Im sure.

I've seen the Flyers play... In Phoenix. Flyers won of course, but that 10 years ago when LeClaire was on the team. I have nothing against the Flyers as a matter of fact they are probably one of my favorite teams in the East.

Oh and Kell, Totorto is a Canadian team, you don't have to be good to get fan support in Canada. Shit look at any Canadian team, you can be dead last and the fans still come to the games. It's Canada, Beer, hockey and fighting, who cares who wins.

Trip, yeah the NHL schedule is not like the NFL schedule, if you have a bad year you don't get an easy schedule the next season. It's more of an East vs East and West vs. schedule with a few scattered inter-conference play games just like baseball does now.So it comes down to if one conference is better as a whole, the other conference has an easier schedule compared to the tougher conference. . I think both conferences were pretty equal this year.

This finals has been a very tough and competitive series with the home team usually getting breaks from the refs. It's equal from that stand point. And I agree with you Sixxer, that Boston should have been in the series. That's the match up I was looking for but they just ran short. It's playoff time, go big or stay home and staying home is what Boston did unfortunately.

Go Wings!

Americans are sheep. They follow the best teams year in year out. That's the Wings. If the Wings were shitty they'd only have a local fan base and the few Canadian stragglers that live close to Detroit.

It's funny, you mention these 2 teams. A friend of mine is Canadian ans so is his wife.Their both come from someplace about an hour north of Toronto. He was still on the active roster with the sabres when he was traded. Aside from cash buffalo didnt get much in return and he went on and played a few more years. Granted he had a shitload more talent in front of him including 4 or 5 future hall of famers.

it was something like that, I think his contract was almost up so they figured they would unload him for something. I see their management has continued the same trend in not being able to keep their players. I cant believe loosing 2 players took them from legit contenders for the cup to a non playoff team. They still have talent but zero leadership on that team now.

So they lost Hasek, Peca, and Satan(different years). That's a huge hit to your veteran roster. I don't follow them anymore, but they were never the same after those 3 left.

Satan was never much of a leader, loosing pecca hurt and 2 years ago loosing brierre and drurry killed them. That was about 80 goals a year they lost and the vetran leadership with both but mostly drurry.

Nice thing is neither of them are the same now. Drurry has done nada in NY and i doubt brierre will ever play a full season without getting hurt. Then they lost/traded jason campbell too.

They have a very good goalie with miller and some emerging talent with vanek, roy and pommenville, but thye need a couple of good vets to keep them in line. last year they kind abecame complacent after miller and vanek were out with injuries and it cost them a playoff spot.

I think detroit wasnt too happy about the quick start to the finals and the scheduling of the games early on, sure that factored into it as well, couple days rest they may have been able to get some guys back and been more competitive later in the series.
