I bought a new lawnmower today, didn't even finish mowing my lawn before it started blowing smoke and spitting oil out the side onto the exaust

Well, that's one side of the story.
What did you do to deserve it?
damned if I know. I filled it with oil using the bottle that was in the box. The bottle and the instructions said that the bottle was the correct amount. As I'm mowing the lawn I noticed a small puff of smoke, then it went away fast, then all of a sudden boom it started to bellow smoke out and oil is dripping out the side of the block so I shut it off

Did you put the oil in the gas tank or the crank case?
Was it a 2 stroke? If so the oil goes in the gas before you pour the gas in the tank.
it was a 4 stroke and yes I put the oil and gas where they belong.
Anyway went to walmart, with the reciept showing that I bought it at 5 and it was now 9, the mower was covered in oil and they exchanged it for a new one
Should of bought a deere.

I love it here when the Mexicans use tools bought at the Home Depot, then return them saying they don't work. This one guy brought a saw that had wood shavings everywhere and tried to get his money back. The guy at the counter said how many boards did you cut before the saw quit. The guy said none. LOL

I'm a deere man through and through, damn near bleed green, but their push mowers are overpriced rebadged other mowers.
Unless you are buying a big boy riding mower, Deere stuff is just other junk painted green.

Around here it's generally your Mom and Pop shops. Sears and such carry whatever brand with a Honda engine so everything falls apart but that.
Not sure about where this guys lives.
We have Honda and Stihl everything, except for the riding mower. It is a Kubota.

I meant what BRAND of push mower would have a honda engine?
All your box store brands (Craftsman, MTD, Toro, Huskvarna) run Briggs or Tuchumsa (sp?)
Deere runs Briggs or Kohler
Is there actually a push mower out there with a Honda engine?
OR a riding mower for that matter?

And don't mind the other brands... the pressure washer was free. The genny was bought off grandpa in law for $225 and its a fuckin bitch to start but does power the entire house. The snow thrower was also free. The end of the weed whip was a freebie (whip and snow were from dad when he moved to florida and sprayer was a throw out from work when we bought a honda). The weed whip has since been replaced by a stihl (a few weeks ago) and it don't show the stihl leaf blower.

Briggs are called by people in the industry "Briggs and Sluton" cause they are cheap and used in many many applications. :td:

I have a Toro Recycler. It's not the nicest mower but it works for me. I bought it to replace the Craftsman POS I had last year. I shouldn't say the Craftsman was really a POS it lasted me 10 years, but the Toro is way better. Lighter and easier to maneuver. The only downside is it has a smaller bag than the Craftsman, but I mulch most of the year anyway.

I had issues with Briggs engines back in the early 90's but any one I've encountered since '00 appears to work pretty well. I'm wondering if they did a massive redesign.

My craftsman I bought in 1996 was a briggs. Never had issues with the engine. It started on the first or second pull even after 10 years and I never changed the oil. I ran a little seafoam through it and the beginning of each season ans ran it out of gas at the end of the season. I had the blade sharpend every other year. That's the only maintenance I performed and it ran great. The drive gear was starting to go out so that's why I bought a new mower.
One thing I discovered, Front drive = bad, rear drive = good.

Argh, that's a sore subject for me right now... i bought a riding mower two years ago, used. Ran fine through the first mowing of the lawn, then it was one problem after another... replaced the starter ($100), all the fuel lines, then the battery the following year, meanwhile shit was always falling off of it :bash:... Last week I went out to do the first mowing of the year, and both tires had gone flat and popped off the beads. Pushed it to the front of the house to fix the tires, finally got it running, drove it to the back... and the fucking engine seized.
I took the fuel tank out, and beat the thing with a BFH until I felt better. Now I have to find one that will actually last a couple of years, and doesn't cost more than my bike. :willy:

My point was some guy at work bought a Home Depot mower with a Honda engine and everything but the engine has been replaced.
No riding mower with a Honda. Although some of the older Steiner riding mower with a crappy Onan engine has a Honda replacement engine. Some of the Toros run a Kawasaki engine. The Kawasaki, according to our local farm and garden store (Schlabach's) say that Kawis are the engine of choice for commercial grade stuff.

In commercial machines, kawi motors are GREAT units. we ran a 13hp kawi on our 36" walkbehind when I worked for a lawn company. that fucker was the most reliable piece of machinery we had in the fleet.

I had a Craftsman garden tractor (American Yard Machine) for 8 years. It had a Kohler V-Twin, 46" deck and a Hydro trans. I worked the hell out of it. Mowed 3 acres every weekend from March to Nov, pulled downed trees and limbs, groomed a gravel drive with a drag etc. I maintained it pretty well and never had a problem with it until the trans gave up the fight. Repairs/replace would cost more than it was worth so I sold it and bought a used Scag with a 61" deck. I got the Scag for about the same price as I paid for the Craftsman originally. The Scag spoiled me rotten. My mowing time went from 5 hours, basically all day every Saturday, of every weekend, to 2 hours on Friday evening after work. I gained another day off every weekend. I should have done it years ago.
Long story short, I lost my Job, wife, home and everything I worked my whole life for, including my mower. I loved that mower...
So anyway, fast forward a couple of years and I moved into a place with 2 acres and lots of stuff to mow around.
You KNOW what I went looking for.
I found a 17 year old Scag that had been rode hard and put away wet for $1400. A day and half later after going over everything, tweaking, tuning, greasing and sharpening I mowed the yard with it. Works great, though I did eventually have to put a fresh battery in it. Its not the prettiest mower around, but even brand new they look more like a piece of construction equipment than a mower anyway. It works so well that I just don't care if it is ugly, in fact I kind of like it. A Scag deck makes for a great looking yard and the sonofabitch is fun, like riding a Tilt-A-Whirl at the county fair. Look at the pic in my earlier post and set yourself in the seat in the back. Now think about a turn at speed, more of a pivot really, around say a tree. Woo Hoo!!. I can also put the deck in, under and around almost anything without me getting near it and only trim a couple of places once every few weeks. Even though the deck is over 5 feet wide, I can mow between scrubs and flowers that are only 24" apart without cutting into them.
Did I mention that its fun? I try to never say never, but I don't think I will ever own a standard type riding mower again, at least not on purpose.

Cub Cadet Mowers. Price is a little higher, but the qaulity is top notch. My old man has a Cub Cadet ride on mower and push mower (for where the ride-on cant go), works flawlessly, and in its 3rd summer now, they've needed nothing more than an oil change.
