View Full Version : More snake rescuing..
This little fellow was sunning himself at my mother in laws after church today. He was so docile. He went into the trash can of his own accord and made quite a show of it getting out. He was really big!
Crappy cell pics, sorry.

Looks like a chicken snake
They're constrictors and fairly harmless... unless you keep chickens or small rodents as pets or livestock.

It's a Black Rat snake. Chicken snake is the slang term I suppose? Very common around here. We had a gorgeous one that lived under our house for many years. Brandon got to see it eat a baby bird a few years ago. That was interesting. I think my animal hating neighbor finally killed him. :( I never thought to take him to live anywhere else but I guess I should have. We get a lot of mice from the hay field across the road so we wanted him here!

I love the black rats. My grandpa had a little farm and we loved them there cause they kept away the rats. We didn't like the 10 that got in his attic though.

What part of this dude is "little"? And how did he get up on top of the garbage bin?

 He's was at my mother in law's house. We took the garbage can and herded him into it. The pics are when we were letting him go near her pond.

Pretty good size. We have a couple of Brown snakes living in our flower beds. I caught one of them the other day and moved him since we were powerwashing our deck...didn't want to kill the little bugger.
I got cold feet when I went to pick him up so I put on a gaunlet style motorcycle glove...just in case. He is about 12 " long.

common miconception.
snakes kill one of two different ways to eat:
1) constricting
2) injecting with venom
constrictor's teeth are very small, just for grabbing hold.

nah, you cant even see them, thats how small. except maybe on a 25-30 footer, then the four biggest ones might be visible., but if you see them , its way too late.

not true - the slow runner may be larger than the others in the group and tends to knock the scrawny people down early so THEY get eaten first.

No not realy, usualy just an occasional mishap at feeding time. Carpet pythons are prety nippy as younggins but with regular handling they are usualy fine. Once hes out of his cage he doesnt think its feeding time anymore he is very mellow.

Tree going bird eating snakes normally have longer teeth to get a hold of the birds and through the feathers.

I think the teeth are more like cartilage (sp?) than actual bone...they almost swing outward and contract back in when they've got whatever they are grabbing (constrictors). My ex got bit a few times during feedings, and he got bit on his dunlap when he had the retic in his shirt to keep him warm instead of the cotton bag I brought for him to take him home in...I hit a bump in the interstate and CHOMP! Got his ass...lol

Either way theyre sharp as hell,. How big was the retic and do you know what kind it was. beautiful snakes but can be pure evil. I had a 13 ft sulawesi, damn thing was so unpredictable. I did have a large burmese get me on the belly. Usualy they wont bite/strike at flat objects, apparently this one didnt get the memo

its a good thing that this is science fact and not open to debate, and its also a good thing we dont pay you to think.

snakes teeth are teeth. only venomous snake's grooved fangs face backwards and move into a downward position during a strike. all the rest lay still.
