I mentioned this in the GF Gear thread... this is how my gf shows up to ride. I am by far not a gear nazi and will occasionally go with out my jacket/boots depending on destination, weather and type of ride but I had to tell her that jeans are mandatory on any ride over a very casual moped-like pace. Hopefully, things will change when she gets her own gear Fri. :rockwoot:

If she wouldn't go as far as wearing a jacket and some over pants I wouldn't even bother making her change into jeans...they're about as protective as a pair of cotton panties.

This is my leg after a wreck, my jeans came apart as soon as I made contact with the pavement leaving my bare leg to slide along.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g8/PsychoMedic/photo7.jpg

I was on a cane for two weeks after that! Its also worth mentioning that this was on rollerblades. I shudder to think of what it would've been like if this was a 40mph+ motorcycle wreck.

and here come the gear nazis...:lol::lol:

Bottom line for me will always be that it's her body, so it's her decision what she wears or doesn't wear. I put the little incentive for jeans... but in case you two don't know this... jeans are what most riders wear to ride. Um... where in the fuck have you been? Since when are jeans not "good" enough to go riding in? Do you two REALLY make your passengers where full leather suits to ride? GTFO! Shit, I wear jeans to ride, as do everyone else I ride with. Hell, I can't remember the last time someone showed up in full leathers to go on a normal ride...:idk:

Oh and just in case you don't know...here it comes... I'm 44 years old and have been riding since I was a kid! If I felt like doing some scanning, I could post MUCH worse pictures than that little bit of road rash there buddy! My hand has been almost cut in half, I have pins in my hip, have had knee surgery and my arm was skinned down to the bone! I've seen two guys lose legs and one guy lose a foot. I've seen guys paralyzed and I've seen guys die. You don't have to tell me what can happen in a crash, I've done my time in the hospital as a patient and in the waiting room. No matter what, something is always better than nothing IMHO. We all decide what our risk level is going to be and we will be the ones that have to deal with it. I have literally seen gear nazi types engage in other "dangerous" pursuits that I wouldn't engage in, Like drinking, smoking, etc so....:idk:

I knew that there would be some that would take this opportunity to get in a few "licks" and that's cool. I certainly don't mind an argument now and again. To be honest, I'm doing good with her because if it were up to her, she's wear a bikini and flip flops to ride. Shit, we went to the beach on Memorial Day and that's exactly what she came down the stairs wearing... I made her put on some shorts, a shirt and some shoes at least.

Yea I ordered a Joe Rocket/Jordan jacket and some gloves from New Enough. They should be here by Fri. We also went shopping for some jeans that weren't so skin tight that she could wear them on the bike. I'm not going to try and force someone to wear leathers to ride with me since I don't wear leather pants myself. Jeans are fine, but at least make her wear a mesh jacket. You can get decent ones for only $100-150 if you look around, and when you're at speed it feels no hotter than wearing a t-shirt.

I take a lot of pleasure in not being like most people.

And yes, I make my passengers wear overpants a jacket, gloves and boots. On my first date with my wife I showed up on my bike loaded up with all her gear for the night. It takes all of 30 seconds to throw on some overpants and zip up. Leathers are not the only, or most convenient, choice out there.

Hey Rogue, were you wearing gear when we totaled my V-Strom? lol

I wear jeans whenever I ride. They're kevlar lined, but they're jeans. Like he says, something is better than nothing. I'd make her wear pants and sleeves though. Not for a crash, but to make sure a rock hitting her bare skin won't make her jerk and dump the bike.

Oh and Tigger? Nicely done. I didn't doubt you or anything when you told me but still, awesome.

Maybe but she didn't wear any lower gear at the Gap that I saw... Oh and I've seen ballistic nylon jackets and pants fall apart on first contact with the pavement. If I have to choose between taking it easy without gear or tearing it up with a false sense of security from wearing "overpants", I'll take choice number one. Nothing short of armor protects you from impact. I'd rather have a 30 mph slide in jeans over a 100+ mph slide in nylon.

She wasn't on the back of my bike at the gap either.

I've been down many times (7) on the track and otherwise in ballistics without any failure or road rash. I've actually crashed twice in my Olympia pants and they saved me both times. I went down once wearing jeans, doing about 15mph on rollerblades, and they disintegrated.

Road rash sucks bad. I'd say that somewhat minor rash that I posted was more painful than my broken ankle or wrist.

You wear ballistic nylon at the track? Really? Okay...

As I've said I've had my fair share plus of road rash. I've had the big, burly, bull-dike nurse rub the iodine filled scrub brush over about 10-20% of my body from a crash at over 100 mph wearing a t-shirt and jeans. I must wear better jeans than you because only my knees were rashed up. My back, arms, shoulders, etc were another story... I had to put that silver cream crap on for weeks!:panic:

I've had "robo-girlfriends" before and I find that I'd rather have a woman that makes decisions for herself. I could easily brow beat this girl into doing anything I want for the most part but I prefer to allow her to make decisions on her own. This girl knows the risks and she's no stranger to pain. She's played sports her entire life and is covered in scars. Call me a bitch, but if I saw her like that on the back of your bike, I'd think you're an asshole that didn't care about her well being and she's an idiot without a clue. I wouldn't allow anyone to ride with me dressed like that.

Gloves, full face, jacket, boots, jeans... all minimal gear worn when we rode as a group. Many were in leathers. It was an understanding among friends - accidents happen and we wanted to minimize negative results.

She's a cute girl. It would be a shame for her to loose an appendage due to infection secondary to road rash.

It happens.

Convince her she's cuter with a sweaty bikini under the protective gear. When you're already wet, all ya' gotta do is ride...

These guys are down on me for allowing her to wear jeans on a ride, apparently that's not good enough.

I always "encourage" people to wear at least as much gear as I do, jeans, jacket, boots, helmet, and gloves. I don't wear leather pants to ride normally and I don't know too many that do personally. I know lots of people on the internet that swear they NEVER ride other than in a full leather racing suit. I guess that's where all of these 10 year old bikes with 6,000 miles on them come from. What I don't do is try and force people to do things that they don't want to do. Especially if it doesn't directly affect me. I know where a lot of you stand on this subject. To me it's the same as smoking... if someone REALLY cared about you they'd "force" you to stop right?

The other thing that always cracks me up on forums is that a lot of the gear nazis are also liberals... so they think that a woman should be allowed to make the decision to murder the child inside her but someone should force her to wear full gear to ride on a motorcycle... oh...okay.

Wow you're really taking it off topic there eh? Comparing abortion to the gear debate is absurd. I'd vote against a law requiring gear and I'm anti helmet law as well...I just happen to think its stupid to ride without gear.

My point was that jeans suck as protective gear. Again, it doesn't take any time to throw on some over pants and they are far superior to jeans in preventing roadrash. Mine are even armored.

Yes, I wear them every time I ride....and I've been known to cover some serious distance on a bike.

We have different standards. I minimize my risks by wearing proper gear. I expect the same of my passengers and provide as such. If they don't abide, they don't ride with me. A lot of my friends think the same. It's like buying a 100 dollar piece of shit helmet for a passenger and then spending 600 on your own melon. Both brains are equally important, as is the health and safety of your passenger.

You may be allowing her to make her own decisions, but if a mistake by you causes her to be in more pain b/c her lack of gear - in my mind you are partly to blame. You encouraged her to ride on your bike in minimal gear by allowing her to put her foot over your machine in shorts.

Sometimes people make bad decisions even if they are adults.

I hear you there. You ask those people how they use their bike, and find out they use it only for weekend rides ----- they don't commute to work every day on it. If they did they'd probably eat their words and start wearing jeans.

I've only known one person who wore a full leather suit just to go to work. But given that her commute was like 45-60 minutes on LA freeways, I can understand. Everyone else either wears jeans, or textile overpants if they need to wear nice pants to work.

That's true... oh and I did exactly what you said by buying her a $49 Scorpion EXO-400 while I wear a Shark RSR2. Well I won't wear leather pants in 90 deg weather so I guess I won't be riding with you :( Oh well... Oh and the "health and safety" of my passenger is definitely NOT as important as my own. That's silly. Just like your health and safety isn't as important as mine...not to me anyway. Besides, when it comes to protection a $50 Dot/Snell approved lid provides the same amount as a $1000 lid. We both know that a lot of that money difference goes to advertising, design, graphics, paint, liner material/comfort. I've never seen a Snell approved helmet fail, have you?

Okay, jeans are better than nothing, I know this from personal experience. You are plain stupid if you think otherwise... A decent denim jean has been tested to perform rather well in abrasion tests and has been protecting biker's lower halves for almost 100 years. Not to mention cowboys, construction workers, etc. I take it you ALWAYS wear a leather suit to ride...good for you! I didn't notice a chest protector, a neck brace or knee braces on the guy in your avatar... I guess the gear thing only applies to sport bike riding right?

As far as how many miles you put on...(well, I hope that you have something other than a WR)... I wouldn't know but I do know that if I only rode when conditions were right (in my opinion, of course) to wear a full leather suit, I wouldn't get much riding done living here. I'm not going out in 90 deg temps wearing a leather suit...

Kind of my feeling on the matter.
I mean, ok, they're not going to hold up to a 65mph slide down the tarmac, but they're a protective layer and will prevent things like sunburn, windburn, strikes by stinging insects (and most insects sting at highway speed ), and road debris.

Okay, I'll address that specifically... You are an idiot if you think that it's not better to wear jeans rather than shorts. Is that clear enough? Jeans offer a great deal of protection depending on denim weight, age, etc. Something is ALWAYS better than nothing. Only a fucking fool would suggest otherwise. Do you understand "where I'm getting it" now? You keep saying that wearing jeans isn't any better than bare skin which "implies" that you think she should be wearing something more "protective", if that is not what you are getting at, please enlighten me on what exactly you are trying to say. Disagree, as stated my jeans completely came apart during a ROLLERBLADE crash. 20mph tops had me in some nasty pain for a couple weeks. Those were Levi's BTW. I'm sure if I had some thick work jeans on like Dickies then they would've offered a bit more protection.

However this discussion is in regard to your girlfriend and I doubt she's wearing rugged work jeans.

I wager that in a low speed crash the type of jeans she would wear would come apart extremely quickly and offer little if any protection. My point is that jeans (especially the type manufactured for the typical female) offer so little protection she might as well just wear the shorts if she enjoys wearing them more than jeans.

But like you said, she's a squid and shorts, tanktops, etc. etc. are to be expected. Around here (105 degree Texas) I'd say about 75% of the motorcyclists dress the same way. And aside from local organized rides I'm usually the only guy on the road properly dressed.

When I wrecked on my bike last November, I was wearing dress slacks that offer even less protection than jeans and I hardly had any rash at all. Far less than the pic you posted earlier. Now I'm not saying it's ok to not wear gear, but I think jeans offer a lot more protection than nothing.

Because 20-25mph is my max speed on rollerblades. Not so on my bike. This debate is more about the safety of those we are responsible for while on our motorcycles though and whether or not jeans provide adequate protection to motorcyclists during a crash.

Ah but if I'm cruising up to the Dairy Queen in town, I'm only doing approximately 25-45 mph... besides, I don't know about you but I'm WAY more likely to "crash" on rollerblades than I am on my bike!!!

You ride around in your "hefty bag" and I'll wear my jeans and we'll both be just fine. I mean I could go on and on about how nylon suits aren't adequate protection because they are not as abrasion resistant as leather but what do I care what you wear when you ride?

There's a vast amount of difference between 20mph and 30 or 45 mph. Yes, I think you're wrong about jeans, especially of the sort made for a female which tend to be weaker and thinner due to the need to stretch around a female's supple ass.

And I don't think you care about what I wear when I ride. But only one of us made a post titled, "My girlfriend is a squid"

A suck ass street bike? I'm going to go way out on a limb here and say you've never ridden one.

Of course I've ridden one and several other enduros. I owned a DRZ400E for several years and it plain sucked as a street bike. Do you claim that your WR is as competent of a street bike as mine? Would you like to take it on a 1,000 mile trip on the freeway? Or that it's as awesome of a dirt bike as a RMZ450 for example? I don't remember anyone riding it in the MX class this year... Maybe I missed that. Right.

True, it's supposed to be a joke of sorts... We have a difference of opinion. I think that ANYTHING is better than nothing and you and your boyfriend do not agree with me. Okay. As far as I'm concerned if it keeps the asphalt away from my skin for even 1" during a slide, it was better than nothing.

When did I ever say it was an mx bike? I said it allows me to ride all the pavement on the planet as well as exploring the back woods. Let's see your sportbike do that. It's a much better street bike than the DRZ . . . and a better dirt bike for that matter.

I did 500 miles on it this past weekend. Is that good enough for you?

If you're talking mx bike sure, but you can get a damn fine enduro that can the licensed.

Sure and it will be a competent street bike but it won't compare to an actual street bike IMHO. Especially a 250 4 stroke, are you kidding me?

If that was true you wouldn't have titled the thread "Okay So My Girlfriend is a Squid." You knew the response you would get from some of us here and were probably looking for an argument/debate. No need to go after people personally because you don't like the way the debate is going.

If your argument is that jeans offer more protection than shorts because they may protect you for the first inch of your 40 foot slide then yea, you're probably right. My point was that they don't offer enough protection (specifically the kind your girlfriend would wear) to make a difference and she might as well wear the shorts.

Would I think she was a moron if I saw her riding with a tank top and shorts? Of course! But do I support her right to do so? Absolutely.

I don't really need the 3d mapping but what I do need is the ability to place objects at any given lat/long and elevation. What I do is create the map objects to test that the displays are displaying the correct symbols in the correct location. Since I'm not actually flying the plane, I have to simulate the data that the displays use for identifiers(waypoints, navaids, contacts, geometries.....).

The WR I have and the WR your rode are completely different motorcycles. The WR250R didn't even exist until 2008. It uses a single cylinder out of an R1 with the same 26,600 mile valve adjustment intervals, 3k mile oil changes, and is 100% street legal out of the box. The WR250F (which you rode) is a dirt bike, plain and simple and yes, it sucks on the road. The "R" version that I have is a dual sport and is phenomenal on pavement.

Geez, when ever you get into a "which bike is better/faster" argument, someone always throws in the "it depends on the rider" clause... but guess what? The rider has nothing to do with which bike is better. Only what rider/bike combination is better.

Do they make R version in a 450? I'd love to test ride one if they do.

No, and I don't think they ever will. They used all the R&D from the R1 motor to make this bike and they would have to start all over from scratch for a 450 version. I just don't see them taking the time or spending the research money to do it.

The GSXR rider isn't in any of the pictures. He was still layed out in the ditch. He was a skinny dude. The bigger guys pushing his bike didn't have any problems.

Yes they did... some of them were wearing JEANS!!! Hmmm there was another guy or two also wearing jeans... that wouldn't have been you would it?

I hate to even bring it up . . . but now that you've asked . . . we weren't even out of town yet. That curve would be no problem at 70+ and since we were still "in town" I was doing the speed limit which was . . . . wait for it . . . . ready? . . . . 35 mph :wtf:

That guy had no business riding a 1k. He split to go home right after that and I haven't seen him since.

This thread is funny in a lot of ways.

Krabill....your bike looks badass and I'd love to try something like that out. It looks like so much fun.

Tigger....apples to apples man. NO ONE here is trying to tell you that his bike is a comparable street bike to yours.

When I see anyone pull up in shorts/tank top/flip flops/bikini/etc. I think to myself they're an idiot and I wouldn't be riding with them. Simple as. :idk: You can ride in whatever the hell you want but I don't have to ride with you if you want to squid it up. Just like you don't have to ride with me. :idk:

Now for the philosophy section of today's show........do you think that people that feel the need to relentlessly argue a point on the internet, while bringing their argument to the point of personal degradation, do so because they inherently like to argue OR because they have something to prove, or maybe because they feel somehow inferior?

I personally feel inferior and that's why I argue on the internet...

It all started with my father, he was a hard man, a drinker and ex military. So he had a very "my way or the highway" attitude. Nothing I did was ever really good enough for him and he let me know that in no uncertain terms. He was abusive both physically and verbally and I can't remember ever getting even one word of love, kindness or encouragement from him in my entire life. Plus my Mother didn't breast feed me. Thank you Kelli for helping me come to an epiphany concerning my character and psychological underpinnings. You are an angel of mercy... bless you!

Just being able to break the speed limit doesn't make for a great street bike, sister. What about ergos, vibration, handling, seat (tell me that narrow motherfucker is comfortable for hours at a time), wind protection, controls, lights, etc.

This bike is the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden . . . excluding a Goldwing. The seat may look narrow and uncomfortable, but it is nothing like the vinyl covered 2x4's on a real dirt bike. It's comfy. The seat to peg height is taller than any bike I've ever sat on so you aren't all cramped up, and there are zero perceptible vibrations at anything below 65 mph. You get a slight buzz up past 70-75, but it'll hold 75 mph all day long if that's your thing. I like to explore the back roads though, so that isn't an issue. It is much smoother and way more comfortable than a DRZ400.

Nah, nah, nah... if you put the same rider under the same conditions on both bikes, that a decent test of the bike. If you put the same bike under two different riders, under the same conditions, that's a test of the rider. If you take two different riders and put them on two different bikes, under the same conditions, you are testing the bike/rider combination. get it?

Better around town? I doubt it. The WR is an awesome around-the-town bike.

Better on the back roads? I doubt it. Again . . . the WR makes a killer back road/twisty bike.

Better commuter? Doubt it. The WR has a more comfortable seating position.

Better on a race track? Yup, but I'm not a racer.

Better on gravel roads? pfft

Better on 2-track? pfft

Better on single track? pfft

Better for camping off of? pfft

So if I'm going to the race track or want to barrel down the highway in search of a speeding ticket, I'll take the 1k. Every where else I'll stick to my sucky ass little 250 street bike :rockwoot:

I guess I just don't understand the mentality is all. Mesh gear isn't any hotter than whatever else you might wear, and if you get the right color it is actually cooler than letting the sun beat down on you. I'm not opposed to taking risks or anything, or I wouldn't own a motorcycle. But a minute to put on some proper gear to save my skin (and some intense pain/recovery) if some idiot cager clips me, or I hit some gravel in a turn just seems like a no-brainer.

BTW, I didn't say I would think she's a moron for wearing jeans as you quoted me saying. I said I'd think she was a moron for wearing shorts and a tank top. Me personally, I never realized how worthless jeans can be for protection until I crashed in them.

Editted to add:
I've been part of the "online motorcycling community" since 2000 so I've heard all kinds of horror stories about people not wearing gear. The one that sticks out the most though is a member of the ZRXOA who was I guess what you'd probably refer to as a "gear nazi" Well, long story short he decided to not wear his gloves one day, got clipped by an unknown brown truck on the highway and destroyed his hands beyond use.

Unable to deal with all the things he couldn't do anymore he actually ended up killing himself and leaving his family behind to grieve. For me its the whole Murphy's Law thing.

We've already covered it but as I stated jeans don't make a big enough of a difference to matter in a motorcycle wreck. I agreed that they do make a difference for the first inch or however long you estimate but after that the rash is going to be just as bad.

I didn't "act surprised" by the gear nazi attack but i was surprised by the "jeans aren't better than nothing" tack the argument took. Almost every person I know rides with jeans 90%+ of the time.:idk:

 Ok maybe act surprised was the wrong choice of words. You antagonize, but then cry foul when someone bites back. You can dish it out, but you can't take it.

(and I AGREE with ya that most of us wear jeans - absolutely.. I'm not disagreeing with your statement)

Shit, very few take more shit on this forum than I do! I don't understand why you think I can't take it? It doesn't bother me in the least. If I act butt hurt, it's just part of the show. Really who cares?:idk:

Besides, how did I antagonize? I posted some pics and they came in with their gear or nothing attitude. I expected it but I don't see how I brought it on by saying that I make her wear jeans...:idk: I mean that is all I did initially right?

First post;

Kaneman reply;

Krabill reply;

I was gonna say . . . you insist on jeans? They aren't really any better than the shorts she has on right now.

This is exactly the order things started... and I caused this how?

Oh and I like the way a mod abuses her power to change my thread title, while telling me that I can't take shit. Then she expects me to "thank" her for it...nice.

Yeah, it's obvious you can handle a little shit thrown your way, without wadding your panties up tighter than a twisty-poodle balloon.

It's a 3D mouse for manipulating objects in CAD. As you move it around, the object on the screen rotates/pans/zooms. Bitchin' little tool. Works in Google Earth, too.
