Damnit! I can't park my bike at my apartment because of my parking spot!
The spot is on a hill and it's fine to pull into, but as I was backing out tonight (first time!), I almost dropped my bike 3 times!
The problem is as I back out over the area from the sidewalk to the road, the elevation changes so that I'm not even touching the ground.
Damnit! I wish I was a little bit taller! :lol

In those instances, I'll stand beside the bike and walk it where I need to, then hop on. Much easier than taking the chance of dropping my bikes.

I don't think I could've walked it down either. :(

These damn hills. So many people strugle with them and I struggle to understand what there is to struggle about.
I hope you figure something out Kel!

How would you do it?
I'm going to park it at my parent's place for now and that's not a huge deal. :idk:

No other options for parking at your apartment? The parent's house sounds like a good move though.

My apartment is in a house that's been converted to apartments. Some people park out back but my spot is out front. I'll take pictures one of these days. I haven't had a look out back so I"m going to see if I can't squeeze my bike in there somewhere.

That is the first thing I thought of when I read the title.
Kel,
Learn to walk the bike backward with the kickstand down or learn the venerable kickstand pivot.

Yeah if I could do the kickstand pivot I'd be good. Maybe I'll get someone to teach me that. :tremble:

It's easy.
You stand on the left side of the bike, rack the bars all the way to the right, tilt the bike towards you till the front wheel comes up, and spin it around.
Unfortunately, you can also break your side stand doing this, so I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it.

Can you pull in, and turn the bike around in your spot? Then you can ride it out.

Thought about that but it's just too tight and there's a chance I'd drop it trying to get turned around. *sigh*

There are some videos on youtube demonstrating it. Some bikes have much better sidestands than others... the one on my 600-lb V65 Sabre looks like a piece of rebar :nono:
I usually use my thigh as a pivot point instead, but if you can't even keep the bike balanced to walk it, that's probably not an option...

I walk my backwards almost every time I park it. I never try to sit and move back and I'm only 5'7 and the bike has me on my toes. Are you just not comfortable walking it places? I can push/pull my bike forward or back anywhere with no problem. I'd say if you can't push it in/out of the space it doesn't sound like it's a good place to park it...

I've heard the same. One of the guys I used to ride with broke his doing this all the time. Good to know how to do if you get in a jam, but not good to do on a regular basis.

I think I've figured out a solution. If I walk or back it out onto the sidewalk and then pull out from there I should be fine! I'm going to try it this week!

I wish I had a garage so I could park my bike at my apartment. I am going to talk to them in the next day or so about putting a storage shed beside/outback of the place.

Stand next to it...lean the gas tank on your hip with kickstand up and walk it out of the spot using the front brake to slow the roll. I have gotten pretty good at pushing/pulling my bike out of just about anything since I can't even back it up on a flat surface while on the seat. I feel I'm in much more control while standing next to it.

Kel, I didn't think I could move my Honda by standing next to it so my husband made me do it with the kickstand down back and forth on a flat surface. It's really more of a mental thing you have to get over. Once you get used to the way it feels, it's really no biggie.
CrazyKell

Ya I do the hip balance thing but it just feels a bit awkward. I can move my bike most places when need be. I'm just nervous about the hill. I think once I get used to doing it I'll be good to go!

I've spun all three of my GSXRs that way without any "breaks"... Hell, I did it three times today. I can't think of her name right now but the girl from Las Vegas extremes showed me how to do it in Daytona back in 2000 before they were famous (with my 'Busa, no less) and I have been doing it ever since.:idk:

I have know several guys who do the kickstand turn, but he's the only one I know who broke his kickstand. I would guess it's a rare occurance, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

Well, we know that the kickstand is not designed to support the full weight of the bike or to take the torque from spinning it on asphalt so I wouldnt be surprised to see one break.

Ah ah ah, exactly what is the break pressure of a kick stand exactly? We know nothing of the kind. For all I know, my kick stand might hold 5000 lbs. I'm sure that there are several factors involved with the failure that she described.... hahahaha!
I actually agree that it wasn't "designed" for that type of work... heck, I also kick my stand down, put my bike in neutral and "lean" on it with my feet up at long lights. I've been doing that for decades without any negative results. :idk: Actually, I'd love to see some figures on this. What is the pressure threshold of a GSXR's kickstand? How much torsional stress is generated by spinning a <400 lb bike on a approx. 1" piece of steel on asphalt. :idk: Where did it break btw? I'd imagine at the pivot point where the stand joins the mount, right?
HokieDNA01

I read somewhere that the stands are steel and very strong however the mounting bracket is aluminum and that is where breakage can accure. I used to spin my 250 like this all the time. Haven't really tried with the 750.

Here's what I know: All the people that payed me money over the years, to weld their kick- stands back together, are going to be seriously pissed to find out that they never break. I am so busted.

Blah, blah, blah.
The facts are these, Galileo; Round pipes are really strong when they point straight up and down. Bend them over..., not so much. Bend them over, and add weight, they break.

I'm in the same boat.
I always walk my bike backwards, since I'm only 5'4 and my bike has a 33 seat height. As mentioned before, just lean the bike against your thigh and you are much more stable pulling it around (works great in the dirt too).
