Notice they have a bias AGAINST sportbikers? kinda odd as I ride one... but if I'm stopped at a gas station... 90% of the time I'll just not "what's up" and go on about my way.
but throw any tourer or Dual Sport... and I'll sit for an hour shooting the shit... :idk:
I wanna say it's just cause I'm interested in their type of riding more... and not a bias against them... but I'd be lie'n. I guess it's just that most of the time that I have kicked up a conversation... it's squid this and pose that.
Mississippi is really getting on my nerves because of that. Though I don't kick up conversation... THEY do... I'm polite and just give them the... "cause it was built to be ridden" response (when they ask why it's so dirty) But I cut it short and move along. It's gotten to the point I hate riding my bike anywhere near town unless I'm just going to or from work, because I get annoyed with seeing them... riding around with no shirts, shorts, brain buckets... cruising... looking for attention.
I'm not saying I'm the end all be all of motorcycles... or that I even have half a clue how to ride one to it's potential... but I guess it comes down to viewing my motorcycle... and motorcycles in general as more than just a tool to get attention... but a way of life... and other motorcyclist... are more than just someone who share's a hobby... but a friend I've not met yet.
and before I'm called a hypocrite for that last line... not everyone who owns a motorcycle... is a motorcyclist. they're just an owner of a motorcycle.
:idk: maybe I'm just stuck on myself... but I just tire of all the ignorant attention they bring to motorcycling...
but there I go stereotyping... :idk:
take it for what it's worth... just something I've been thinking about lately...
No, but I live in an area that has just as many capable riders as there are squids.

I wouldn't say I have a bias like you do.....but I'm very particular about who I'll talk to.
Part of that is because I'm ridiculously shy. The other part of that is that I've tried to be the nice guy but all I get is squids....and it gets on my nerves. :lmao:

Yes, all of the time. It was funny down in Birmingham yesterday when we would talk to other cyclists when we said we were doing an Iron Butt from MO. They would see the Connie 14 and Bandit, then see my bike and be like "You rode that all the way from Missouri?" with a confused look on their face.
Also, probably 90% of the people here just cruise around town looking for attention, which, I will admit, is fun every once in a while, cruising through downtown on a Friday or Saturday night. The other 10% though are true riders who are a blast to talk to.

Well I've never been a fan of the "only people who ride as I do are motorcyclists" attitude but I definitely avoid other riders. For the most part they totally irritate me. Seriously. They give me their numbers and I throw them away. I really don't feel like babysitting or getting run into, thank you! I definitely don't feel like answering a million inane questions about bikes all afternoon. I don't know, I'll do a couple rallies a year and I think that will about do it for me and group riding...

I love the ones that ask me how fast I've gotten my bike. As though that's some sort of indicator of a bike or rider's ultimate potential.
But yeah, I totally get where you're coming from.. and a couple of my coworkers are the stereotypical squid/posers. They've asked me if I wanted to "ride" with them ("oh, you mean buzz down I-35 as fast as you can go, weaving in and out of cars? sweet!"), or go to bike night at Twin Peaks.. inside my soul is throwing up, but I smile and say I have other plans.

it's not that... I can deal with others doing things different than me... it's the negitive aspect they bring. I honestly don't think it's the "ride like I do or else" mentality... as I really have no interest in ever riding a trike or gold wing... but they're some of the most entertaining to talk to.
I'm extremely cautious about riding with other sportbikers... especially when I don't know them... so I've done it twice... both times ended with me taking the next exit while they wheelied/cut people off attracting the wrong kind of attention. I've ridden on about 5 occasions with a group of bikes that contained anything from cruisers to dual sports to big ass tourers. never had a hint of feeling nervous among them...
I guess I'm just stereotyping again here... but it just feel like the vast majority of the sportbikers I run into are just attention whores. :idk:

LI is the same way, chock full o squids. Fortunatley I have found a good group of guys that we ride with and organize stuff. But I have met up with guys in the past who would do wheelies and stupid shit on the pkwy so I would just mysteriously get lost and do my own thing.

I know the cop that responded to my accident was biased against sport bikes. He accused me of going 75mph and he was ready to write me a ticket but he said he would wait until the investigation was over. When the forensic team came out to investigate they determined I was going 36. I will say that the cop called me back personally and apologized. He said "I'm sorry but I'm going to have to eat crow in this one".

Well at least he apologized, I guess..
I had an asshat DPS officer that worked my accident. Tried to say that the reason I crashed was that I was going so fast that my front wheel came off the ground. Being as I was riding a '93 F2 at the time, I would have to really work to get that bike to wheelie (being as I've never wheelied a bike, I wouldn't even know how).. and there's no way I was trying to do that going 40mph on a back country road.  But then the guy also was trying to question me in the ER while I was vomiting blood, and then threatened my mom with a ticket for trying to "impede the investigation" when she tried to insist on staying with me when they took me to CT. :screwy:

Just chalk it up to you having more experience from the types of riding and riders that you prefer...
Youve seen my area...typically anytime someone says their going to the track its the drag strip, and you get the deer in the headlights when you ask if they know track racing or MotoGP, etc...
I talk to those who talk to me, but unless theres something REALLY cool that grabs my attention, I just go my own way...

Oh I hear what you are saying... I think that some of it has to do with age, experience, etc. :idk: here we are in another situation where my honestly will get me vilified but as some of you know, I've appeared in several "stunt videos" and my group was pretty known back home for doing wheelies on the freeway, etc. I won't say that it's something that I'm "proud" of but I won't hang my head in shame either. I had some fun but I also buried some friends, so that chapter is over...
Maybe some of you can do something that I no longer have the stomach for, you could try and befriend these kids and maybe calm them down before they get killed. I don't have the heart for it anymore... Heck when I first moved here, I met a guy named Kacey Fry. He asked me to go riding with him the next day. While he was waiting for me, he decided to do a few wheelies up and down the street by campus. Someone pulled out, Kasey lost it, end of story. I went on a memorial ride for him just before the rally. One of the cops was popping "bunny hop" wheelies on his Beemer while he was escorting us...:idk: I don't even do wheelies unless I'm by myself, I don't want to even encourage it. Again,:idk:

I bailed out of a ride early on Saturday cause I was sick of watching the HORRIBLE passes they kept making on cars mid corner. I am by no means claiming I do not pass on a double yellow (hence the "super secret probation" I am under in NC) but I wait till both the car driver AND I know it is clear before I make my pass. These guys I was riding with (didn't really know them) where runnin up on cars and just going around whether they could see or not. Then one driver got into it with one of "us" about "you can't pass on a double yellow" well what does "our" guy do? he tells him "well you tried to block me and that is attempted vehicular homicide"! Are you kidding me. After a few more blown turns in front of me I bailed. Not the type of riders I want to be associated with. And they are all too common.

Exactly! Man that reminds me of a story. I was riding with these guys a few weeks ago that were making double yellow passes. They pissed a couple off in a pickup truck so bad that the lady driving tried to hit one of them and then they later stopped and almost got into a fist fight with us!!! You should have lodged a complaint! I had a cop once decide to chase me down because he thought that I was speeding (no radar or anything). When I saw him, I turned the next corner and pulled over. Well, TJ Hooker came flying around the corner so fast that he couldn't stop and creamed my 'Busa. I ended up in the hospital, my bike went to the shop and he went to the unemployment line. I made Grand Rapids pay for my hospital bills, my bike and my missed worked (which I milked to the max btw). What an ass!

Where I live is patrolled by Kent County Sheriff. I'd imagine GRPD would have been worse had they arrived on the seen. Response was quick though, sheriff, ambulance and FD showed up in less than 2 minutes. Of course the FD is only 3/4 mile from where the accident occurred.

I'll second the "they dont know till you teach them" bit. If I hadnt made the attempt to talk to my riding crowd, Id never have learned about "real" riding versus back and forth to hooters, drag strip, or illegal stunting, etc...I wont dog someone who wants to stunt and just cruise around looking cool, but neither will I show any more "respect" than that given.
And every chance I get, when I do chat with someone new I try to enlighten them, and let them know there is more than just a drag strip, and our bikes were built to be handled and not just sat upon.

Truth! I mean in all honesty, we are all products of our environments to an extent. Every stupid thing that you do or have done was learned behavior. If you drink, it's because people around you do. If you smoke it's because people around you do. If you smoke dope... etc. If someone doesn't teach you better than how will you ever stop, at least until you kill yourself that is.

I guess I've gotten lucky. We have a huge sportbike group here that quite a few of em are real riders, whether that be track days or touring. Yeah, you'll normally see one stupid pass over the course of a 3-4 hour ride, but its nothing terrible and its never been to the point of a fist fight.
Here is a crazy idea. I want to get a stunt bike. Parking lot only. Yeah, they are normally attention whores too, but it looks like a blast.

I will talk to anyone about their bike. I like any type of bike and their subtleties intrigue me. Most people seems to welcome the chance to tell you how good their bike is.
I have experienced another kind of prejudice though. I own a variety of styles of bikes. I ride a stretch of New Hampshire route 9 as part of my commute. In this one little small town I have been stopped and given the once over when on my Hayabusa and my 999 for being 5 10 miles over the limit. every time I have managed to get out of it with a "don't do it again or in one case a written warning. I am grateful because it is up to the police to use their discretion as they see fit. But I have gone past the same policeman on a Cruiser or a Lux Tourer at 15 to 20 over and never caught a second look. Anyone with similar expereince?

to clarify... if I see a fully geared up sportbiker... the odds are I'll chat with them... or at least try. but if they've got shorts on... or flip flops... or no gloves... or worst of all no jacket... naw... I'll pass...
well I think part of it is the fact that I deal with 600+ 18-30y/o's daily. I probably get asked about motorcycles at least 10 times a day.
Most of these airmen are virgin's to the motorcycle world... and know nothing but what they've seen them selves, on TV or on Youtube. I do my best to lead them down a safe path... but I know how thick headed I was when I was in my early 20's. (like that's changed) I've actually set up a once a month briefing for all those who ride, or are even remotely intrested in motorcycles for our Squadron. we had the first one last week...
We talked about saftey gear benifits/drawbacks... different types of bikes... why they are interested in bikes... ect. I'm sure I have a couple "squids" in the group... but I do my best to keep things as informal as possible in these meetings (still very military structured though) and let them air their side or views....
I guess this my have a big part in my bias... as listening to all the ignorant crap these airmen see/hear... and then think it's the right way, has gotten me looking at most sportbikers and think... another awesome Rep for the motorcycle community. :idk:

It's true.
Most cruiser riders are douches.
Most ADV riders are douches (see Trip's off-road story and ask any tourist that was there that day).
Most Goldwing riders are douches.
Most dirtbike riders are douches.
Most BMW riders are pricks.
I'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt, regardless of bike or gear. You can tell in 2 minutes of chatting if they are "your type" of rider or not.

Yeah but most of of the people on earth are douche's, so it would stand to reason that most of the population on any type of MC are douche's.
I would listen to that arguement.

No difference between the majority of vette owners and ricers other than the amount of money invested.

Yep but that goes with just about any group. Harley riders ...sportbikers...Mustang owners....the list goes on and on. There are cool people in all groups but plenty of douche's to go around. :whatwhat:

Those "kids" crack Kerry and I up when we are out in his 300zx. They love to slow down right next to us and pop the clutch before "taking off" in a puff of smoke and noise. He usually just lets them go. I wouldn't! :rockwoot:

I used to have a Mustang and did a lot of work to it...definitely a fun car.
Imho Mustangs are some of the best sounding cars especially with aftermarket exhaust.

It was said as a joke since Trip used the term "old fogies in Vettes"...I've never said that in my life and I wasn't alive during WWII either. :lol
Oh and yes while visiting my grandmother in the nursing home I learned about "that smell".

Its the 1990 model Twin Turbo. Moded to about 400+hp. He added adjustable Tein coil-over shocks which really helped with the handling. The thing used to break the ass end lose constantly (may have had something to do with a lead foot) but it really sticks well now. Runs great. 125,000 miles.

It's a joke. My dad owns a vette that he bought for his midlife crisis toy. I have gone to a meetup with him and it was a huge group of people just like him and older there. After that, I started calling the vette a "grandpa" car to piss him off.

I totally know what you mean. I never go to any of the group get togethers...I tried it a couple of times and it just wasn't for me.
Now when some of the modded Vette guys get together for a "run"...I'll join in but since I got back into sportbikes in 07 I haven't even been doing that very often. When I say "modded" I don't mean fancier floormats either.
I didn't ride for a few years since being run over by a cager and having several surgeries but once I got back on a sportbike I caught the fever again.
"nhgunnut" who is a member here got me back into riding. My wife worked with his wife and we went to visit. He tossed me the keys to his Ducati 999R and then his TurboBusa and when we came home the wife and I went out and bought two bikes and it's been a blast ever since.

My Corvette came from the factory with 3 catalytic converters on it along with the muffflers. I cut the mufflers off and put on some nice tips, and it sounds like a proper 350 now. The mufflers are on that car for sound. The catalytic converters take care of the emissions business, so I wasn't too worried about cutting them off.
You can always try that. It is louder inside now, but I have a good stereo, so I just turn it up.

I tend to slash the tires of anyone on a bike nicer than mine. My blade is getting a little dull.
I've had people want to ride or exhange numbers. Sorry fucker but we're not friends for a reason. I'm a soloist anyways. Nothing beats a nice trip to the gap or to the middle of nowhere Georgia by yourself.
