I am actually thinking of doing this tonight, odd you posted up a thread about this. I am wanting to turn an old PC that was a XP generation PC into my media server for my TV. I got a copy of Vista Ultimate I may put on it. I think it is an old 64 bit 939 AMD chip. I will let you know how it goes.

I run everything from XP to Ubuntu

Mac OSX at home and at work. Really considering setting the home one up to dual boot Windows 7 beta.

ME is just a big virus that Microsoft developed.

So far it's all troubles and no fixes. I'm not a Free BSD head, so I'm not into hacking drivers. I know that it can be done and I've got a good video card in the box, but I'm not getting the right combination of drivers.

Well Trip Imma Go Vista Home premium (Purly for the MC on Xbox)
*i found a cheap LEGAL source*

And then ASUS GeForce 8400GS 256MB PCI-E Video Card($35), and 1GB Samsung PC100(only $14)

That would make 2,490M of Ram and 256MB Video.
So i think that muight run Vista O.K
Since the Recomended is 1Ghz CPU, 1GB System memory, 40GB HDD with 15GB free and a 128MB Video Card
(Im putting it on a new HDD so i can put my OEM XP back on)

What piece of crap computer are you trying to run home Premium on?
Better yet what horrendous piece of crap do you own still uses PC100 memory and why the hell would you put any money into it?

For some reason I HIGHLY doubt this POS Tandy you are trying to upgrade has a PCI-e slot and takes PC100 memory.

I think I am going to "get" a copy of XP MCE, everyone seems to like that better than vista from what I have read and the people I talked to for an older comp.

If you do get a copy, don't try to update it beyond SP1. SP2 and higher has a fix that will detect if a non-OEM key is on the system (basically almost any install that wasn't an OEM install done by a manufacturer). It will basically disable Windows. All of the patches out there I've tried that are supposed to address the issue do not seem to work.

Desktop 1 - Came with Vista, got rid of it in Favor of XP after a few months
Desktop 2 - Windows 7
Laptop - XP

I tried Vista, but I had too many issues with it's compadability and went back to Vista. Windows XP was a much better program, and Windows 7 is shaping up to be even better than the previous 2 based on it's beta form

I've been messing with MediaPortal for a couple of years now. I like it - especially all of the skin choices you can download for it.

MCE is beyond SP1, I will just get a copy of the current build.

Good luck. I haven't seen it on our MSDN downloads in some time now.

Windows 7 is noticeably faster in operation than Vista, on the same hardware. There are little things that they did, that improve performance. Actually I should probably have said don't degrade performance as much.

For example when you look at the start button in Vista, the upper arc of the button intrudes into the desktop area and any active window. To render this arc takes a not insignificant amount of processing time, when compared to a straight line like the one in WinXP. In Windows 7 the round start button is fully contained within the taskbar, rather than protruding above it, so that processing time is not a factor.

A lot of little things like that add up to better performance.
