View Full Version : Well My Girlfriend Is Taking MSF!

Yep my girlfriend just left to sign up for MSF and I don't know how to handle the situation...:panic: I have a hard time riding in a car with her driving, much less with her behind me on a bike! She's got it in her head that she wants a bike and her family put almost $4,000 in her pockets from her birthday so she certainly can afford one. She wanted a 600 but I told her that if she wants a real girl's bike, she'll get a SV650 or Ninja 650R... Just kidding! Actually, I showed her the Ninja 250 in the blue which she really likes so she put a deposit on it and it should be in next month. While we're waiting I'm also looking at those UM bikes...:idk: I've seen about 5 of them in the past couple weeks and there's a dealer not too far away.

That's great she's learning to ride and taking the MSF.

I wish I'd taken it! Good choice on the 250 too!

that's great she's learning to ride. I like it much better that way. My girl started riding quite a while ago.

I do have one thought though. I always see people as you mentioned with their new riders in the back. I usually make my newbies ride in front of me. This does a few things for me. number one it makes them make decisions about riding on their own. They can't just blindly follow me which is what most newbies will do.
number two it keeps cars off of their butt. I can handle the pressure of a car right on our ass as we ride at newbie speed better then someone who is just trying to figure out which gear they should be in.
three: I can watch how they ride. body position,shifting/braking/accelerating smoothness and offer advice as needed.
fourth and probably most important. we ride at their pace. they never feel pressured to keep up with me.

i have taught a number of people to ride successfully and this has always worked. they are a little timid at first about being in front but they get used to it quick.

the ninja 250 is an awesome first bike.

If I'm out with a new rider I put them at the front too but make sure they know not to keep looking in their mirrors excessively.

I almost crashed as a newbie because I was too focused on what was going on behind me.

Oh I've taught several people to ride as well, and am actually a huge proponent of putting the "slower" riders in front to set the pace. I was just "turning a phrase', I will be sure to ride with her in front for weeks after she gets her bike. Besides, this chick has an AWESOME ASS, so riding behind her will not be a problem!!!

UPDATE! I just got a call from the dealer saying that they have a black 250 that the deal fell through on they'll sell for $4k OTD, hmmm....
When she gets back from signing up, I'll see what she thinks.

I don't know what kind of deals they are willing to swing on those but MSRP on their 250 is more than the baby Ninja and I would think the Ninja would be worth more when it is time to sell due to the Kawasaki name. Some of the lesser known Chinese and Korean brands also have weak parts support.

Supposedly, parts support is good and the warranty is 2-3 times as long. Not to mention their bike is a v-twin, has adjustable rearsets, sport bike clip ons, perimeter frame, etc. :idk:

Oh and they'll let a 2009 go for $4,000 OTD.

Are you talking about dropping it in the driveway or wrecking it on the street? I've had bikes most of my life, mostly dirt bikes and I NEVER dropped any of them in the driveway. Why do people automatically assume you are going to let your bike fall over in the driveway?

Because THEY were stupid enough to do it!!! I couldn't resist!!! I've never dropped one in a driveway either. I've come close a couple of times though! FWIW, my gf isn't some wee little thing, she's 5'11 and has played sports all through school. Before she was injured she had planned to play for the WNBA. She is plenty tall and strong enough to hold up a baby ninja!

My wife took the MSF course and it helped bigtime !! I started teaching her how to actually ride on the street AFTER she took this course to get the basics. I then would ride her bike and she would follow in the car to an industrial park or somewhere like that for her to practice.

She's done well.

Oh for sure! She's had a scooter for years and never just dropped that... but I'm sure that it's possible for sure. I just don't see any reason to buy a bike based on that possibility.:idk: Besides, why wouldn't you repair the turn signals on the used bike? Regardless of what she gets, she's not going to let it go to shit so if anything gets broken, it'll get repaired. I'm sorry girls but the new bike just looks 10x better than the old bike without question.

Okay now, for one the MSF is not necessary to buy a bike in NC so just taking it period is a step. Besides, who said she was bringing the bike home before she passes?:idk: She has money on a Ninja 250 because they are in short supply and if she waits until after she takes the course, she won't be able to get one period. What kind of sense would it make to take the stupid class and not be able to get the bike you want? Are you incapable of being nice? Yeesh!

This is the best advice right here. When I bought my ex-girlfriend a Ninja 250 she crashed on her first time out because some asshole was all over her butt while she was trying to make a left turn off a main road. If I would've been smart enough to be in the back and run interference I could've prevented that.

Only I forgot to put the kickstand down and SLAM!!! There I went into a pile of glass Xmas ornaments. Cut the shit out of my hand, lol. I was trapped under my bike 'til my buddy came outside to see where the hell I went.

This is Fort Worth, TX and there are a lot better places to get Mexican within a 2 mile radius of Joe T's.

The MSF Nazi and the Gear Nazi mindset,
You can't buy a bike unless you take the MSF and you can't ride a bike unless you have on full gear.

Well guess what? Yes you can! I went the extra mile and talked her into this course, mostly because I don't want to teach her and I talked her down from a 600... I'm done at this point. If she doesn't pass the course for some reason I'm sure that she'll get the bike anyway and I'll try to teach her to ride as best I can.

I got to stay at class with him and on range days they let me reign him and the other youngster in a little. Not that they did anything wrong they just did things too well and quickly. we rode home one night with one of the instructors in a driving rain and lightning struck a capaitor right over my son's head. He got kudos from the instructor for not flinching on that one. Wish I would have gotten a picture of it. black sky, lightning and a silhoutte of baby ninja. very cool.

Yea I've heard that too! If my gf happens to accidentally put her foot down during the "8", I don't think that makes her unqualified to operate a motorcycle.

Laying the bike over during the test was an automatic failure. We had two girls fail. There was even a guy who dropped the rebel 250 he was on in practice but he kept it up for the test and passed.

Her Dad rides and she grew up with dirt bikes and quads. Plus she's has a scooter, not the same thing but it'll be helpful experience during the balance and maneuvering exercises.

See that is different....she knows how to work something on two wheels already.

We bought our Ninja before I took MSF, but it was our 'other' vehicle at the time so we were going to ride whether we liked it or not.

I laid my bike down twice the first day I had it. First time ever touching the controls of a bike. My dads says, "here is the clutch, break, and throttle. Take it around the building." Down I went after the second turn.

from experience, we try and keep spouses apart during class. the riding one can and is usually determental to new riders. esp. one's that have never ridden before or have very little exp. w/ bikes.

the prob. is that alot of people project their experiences onto these new riders. we have some that i don't think could ride a bicycle let alone a motorcycle. and alot of you guys have alot of bike experience before taking the course, alot of these younger ricer kids (and women) have never shifted a car, let alone rode a bike(motorcycle, i've had some that have never ridden a bicycle, CRAZY) , but they are hell bent on getting a 600SS bike.

here's a STAT, +/- 90% of motorcycle deaths are people taught by family and friends vs a course.

that "stat" takes into account many years of accidents before msf was around as well correct. what about 90% of last years accidents?
i only ask because of all the people I have taught to ride none have crashed, my son who went to MSF crashed.
was it msf fault of course not.
I guess I would say the stat is 100 % of crashes are msf grads.

Shit son, I knew a guy who had 4 cars before he had his license, true story! Besides, she's confident she will pass or she'll take it again or she'll just buy the damn thing. You do not have to take the MSF course to ride a motorcycle anywhere in the United States of America. It is voluntary. I can relate. I grew up around bikes and come hell or high water I was learning to ride... Erik just happened to come into my life around that time and rode. He had two choices: help me or not. He chose to help, thankfully.

I meant used as in the older style, even though she doesn't really like it. But as I said it doesn't really matter since she has the scooter and pretty much knows what to expect on the street.

I on the other hand, only knew what it was like to ride on the back. Being in control of your own bike isn't for everyone (guy or girl) so rather than invest a lot of money in a bike, I bought a used one. That way I wasn't out too much if I didn't like it. Fortunately I liked it and ended up with my 600. I actually sold the 250 last year (4 years after I bought it) for the same price I paid.

Yea not bad! You have to remember that the '08 sold for $3,600 I believe and the blue book is $2,200-2,500. I understand that these bikes are kinda rare but yeesh!

thats retaining its value........thats why the "i can't afford to buy 2 bikes" excuse for buying a 600SS is bunk. we sold our 250 for like $100 less then we paid w/ ~4k mi

and buying used is the way to go.

I hear that.

I sold my GSXR for 500 more than I paid for it...after 5 years of riding and one low side. Win for marko.

I sold my V-Max for more than I paid for it 5 years prior. Of course that's another "rare bike" situation. Plus I stole that bike from a kid that got it for a gift and was scared of it!

Not much to it really. I got a good deal on it to begin with. Prior to me crashing it, it had never been down. I low sided at about 25 mph. Last year I listed it for 3500 and took 2500 for it. I was up front and totally honest about the bike. Didn't hide anything.

sure there are special circumstance and deals, but commonly beg. bikes hold their value esp. after the first buyer. most other bikes depreciate like rocks.

A lot of people appear to have special circumstances....

I sold my first Magna for more than I paid for it.

Yea I've heard that too! If my gf happens to accidentally put her foot down during the "8", I don't think that makes her unqualified to operate a motorcycle.

Me either.

I've been riding on and off for 20 years or so and never took the MSF.

For all I know I might have to put a foot down if I did the figure 8 ...maybe not but I'm just sayin'... :lol

That bike and I had a love hate relationship. Some days I loved the colors, some days I hated it. All things considered it was a great bike. And super rare. Thats a factory color. I dont know what asshole would come up with a paint job like that...but it is.

hah you know i found myself behind a green RR the other day at work and thought about ya? kinda wierd considering weve never met. damn fake internet life!

I know what you mean. Maybe someday we will have the opportunity to meet.

No problem, I think that she's getting the blue anyway... apparently, she's found one in Raleigh and just to make everyone happy, IT'S USED! Some guy bought it for his daughter and now she doesn't want it. Get this an '08 blue with under 1000 miles for....drum roll....$2800!!!! I talked to the guy last night for about a half an hour, seems legit! Apparently, he's the second owner and bought it for $3200. If she gets this I'll be amazed! Oh and for the record, her deposit is refundable.

That is a great deal. I hope everything goes through. The other plus of getting a used bike is that she can have some money left over to start on the 600 fund or whatever else she may want.

Wait - shouldn't you be talking her out of it since she'll just be bored with it in a thousand miles?!? :ps: redflip j/k!

Congrats to both of ya - good luck landing the deal & getting her started! :rockwoot:

One advantage of the new 250 (beyond looking waaaay better - hell, I'd consider rocking one if I had a long commute!) - frame slider selection. Not sayin' she'll necessarily need them, but hey - cheap insurance....

Yea ha,ha,ha but remember she will be the third owner of this bike and it's an '08... Gee I wonder what happened to the other two owners hmmm...? I wonder why you can find so many of this rare bike on Craig's List and almost everyone is trying to get just about retail for them? I'll take a WILD guess, it's because they got talked into a 250 and now less than a year later, in some cases a few months, they want something else and are stuck with the loans. Heck, there are several listings of people trying to get you to take their bike's without titles for less than they owe until they get it paid off. I know that some people buy them and are happy indefinitely but for the most part they are "learner bikes" pure and simple. You buy them knowing that at some point you're going to replace it with what you really want. As will she. Shit dude, she has a Mustang GT and her family has a Porsche that she drives all the time, she's not going to be satisfied with this bike for long.:idk:
