Just got approved for a Blackberry at work! :rockwoot:
My choices are Curve, Storm, or Pearl.
I know I don't want the Pearl.
Opinions on Curve or STorm?
I'll need to look at documents from work quite often which is why I'm leaning toward the Storm and it's larger screen.
Can't wait for a new gadget!
Wait for the Tour, see how it is. I believe it comes out in July. It will have a touchscreen like the storm, but a fixed keyboard.

I didnt' see that in her list of options...

It wasn't because it's not out yet. If she can get the storm, her cell phone company will offer the tour.

Depends on if her company approves of brand new mobile devices, or if they have to qualify them first. Could be a bit of a wait for her.
Bell is getting it mid july, telus and rogers probably won't be too far behind.

I won't be waiting for that one unless there's a really good reason for it. :(
This is so that I can be on call after hours and needs to be effective immediately rather than July. Besides, if Bell is getting it and Telus (the company we use) is even going to wait a month...it'll be a no go for me. :(
That being said....what do ya think?!

I think you should go to a local store that has the Storm and give the keyboard a try. If it works for you, I'd go with the Storm. With the direction mobile devices are heading - seems silly to limit yourself to a traditional BB. Bigger touch screens are the way to go.
go storm, stay the ef away from the curve. Shit memory + keyboard issues

You know that they say, the blacker the berry . . .
I have a storm and I would advise not getting it unless you are capable of reprogramming the OS yourself. It's not that complicated, but it's the only way to get an OS that is even remotely good. The battery and memory leak are both huge issues on it too.

Go to Verizon wireless and look at the reviews for the storm. Most of the reviews say it sucks. I'm no expert because I don't have one, but we are looking for one and everyone I talk to says the storm sucks for first time BB users. But like I said, I don't know first hand.

The storm is actually better for first time blackberry users because its not the typical blackberry. The blackberry is a much more corporate oriented device where the iphone is more of a gadget device. The storm falls inbetween those two.
The major fault for the Storm is the OS. Which can be better if you are capable of installing leaked OSes.

I'm trying to convince the wife to get an iTouch but she doesn't want to haul around 2 devices. As I said before, she's a stay at home mom, what does she NEED a smart phone for? I'm a professional and I don't carry any phone at all.

eh works for me. Im waiting on the 2nd gen version. Unless something with a similar layout to my glyde shows up with wifi and a java (or android) os. No more of this locked down brew shit.

I got an iTouch off of CL - it's a good toy. No one needs either an iPhone or iTouch

Do she have internet on her phone plan now? If not, get her the touch. No reason to make your phone bill skyrocket.

Thats my take on it too. The storm is my first blackberry and I have had no problems getting used to it. And I think its less professional based than the curve that my friend just got. I upgraded the OS on my storm within about 6 hours of buying it and have had almost no issues with it. It usually runs smooth and I like it a lot. Only problems Ive had are the memory leak (which doing a quick pull every couple days takes care of) and the not so great battery life. The longest Ive managed to go between charges is about 1.5 or 2 days. I usually just charge it every night while I sleep and it does fine.

Negatory my friend, no touch screen on the Tour. Tour is a minorly reworked Bold for Verizon. The Magnum is the Touch/Keyboard mix.

yep - at work we can only get a new blackberry every 2 years unless something happens to the current one... and even then we'll probably just get another of the same until it's time for a refresh...

Well apparently I've been changed back to the curve because of such bad reviews (from other office users) on the Storm.
So now I'm getting a Curve in silver.

The curve is a good phone. The storm really is bad if you can't make hybrid OSes to make it somewhat decent. It's a very odd phone, different phones work better with different OSes.

I hope they do a serious overhaul of the OS soon. Not only the Storm, but all Blackberry OS's. A guy at work got a Palm Pre and let me play around on it, and that things is flat out fucking impressive. If Palm can junk their god awful, piece of shit, garbage, shithole, asinine, horse shit, Palm OS and replace it with an incredibly intuitive, easy to use, and goddamned incredibly functional Web OS, RIM could do the same, especially on a phone like the Storm. Shit, put Web OS on the Storm 2 so I won't feel so bad when I swap over to a Web OS phone when it comes time to upgrade. Feels like I'm using a DOS phone in comparison now. Damn Pre spoiled me.

mine on a hybrid doesn't, but it slows and the memory leak is god awful.

Can't speak for others, but with the exception of one or two of the betas, my phone hasn't locked or frozen since the .90. It's been pretty reliable in that regards, with each of the betas smoothing out those problems.
Gladiator, welcome to the site man.

What does memory leak actually mean?

What does memory leak actually mean?
Some programs or aspects of the OS drain your available memory when they don't close properly or hang up in the background. If it doesn't get fixed, the phone gets slow as fuck, your text messages get randomly deleted as the phone tries to free up memory, and the whole thing gets fucking goofy real quick. The quick fix is to pull the battery and let it do a reset, but on some OS releases, the problem springs up again within minutes. It's fucking annoying as shit.

Is this a problem on the Curve?
It's a problem on all Blackberrys to some extent. I think the Storm gets hit harder with it because of the OS is really written for the traditional keyboard/trackball style layout and they've tried to fuck with it and try to make it work on a touch screen when it's really not an OS that's tailored to that kind of setup. It's like buying a new computer with fancy hardware, then running Windows 3.11 and wondering why none of your printers and cameras and other shit work.
You may run into that problem if you install a bunch of apps on your phone and have them running in the background, but the Curve/Bold/Pearl seem to be less prone to memory leaks than the Storm.

its a problem on all but worse on the curve since the onboard memory is about half of what the pearl has

If you haven't already, check out crackberry.com for all their tips, faqs, forums and all that other shit. There's such a huge wealth of information available on that site. Also, a good selection of free user created themes to personalize your phone, if your work allows you to install that kinda stuff.
On the homepage, about half way down, is a list of links for people new to Blackberry phones to help get you familiar with things.
