Yep very common. Saturn put ATF in their transmissions starting from 1991. ATF takes alot of shearing force AND is easy to spin meaning less fricton an more mpg.

While ATF may be the specified fluid, it probably won't shift as well as Royal Purple or GM Syncromesh, both of which make syncros move like butter
