fuck windows. get Linux. Ubuntu is a great build and very user friendly once you know what you're doing. I ran it for close to 2 years on one desktop until the drive failed completely. its a good system.
windows is only good for videogames and those who are scared of linux.

xp pro 2002?
No it's just XP Professional. It bombed because dell probably loaded a bunch of extra crap on there (too compensate for 100 different hardware configurations).
Don't you have a recovery area on the HD? Dell restore cd?
XP Pro images are readily available around the web as are corp keys. start from scratch or recover the existing system (reference microsofts site for the walkthrough).
Ubuntu is fine, you may want to think about what you need out of the computer before you pick a version and you better do your research for hardware support. Vid cards\Peripheral\Sound Card\Tuners.

Sounds like you got hit by a virus and the antivirus, and virus had a little mutual annihilation fest.

Awww did you just turn 19? How sweet! Perhaps you should take that computer back to where you got it if you're having that much trouble? I have three computers and all are working fine (knock on wood):rockwoot:
We had the blue screen of death over the weekend. Going to the shop today and yes it's a Dell.

unfortunately though it was a present from Dave from down on their manweek trip so we cant take it back to the store and hes too much of a "computer junky" to allow me to take it to a store to have it looked at. bt if it keeps up like this for much longer and he cant pink point why its doing it then im gonna take it to a store anyway

fail. mac sucks the most. you pay $2k for a computer that has less than 2gig of ram, and a piece of shit processor plus no compatibility with video games, when theres computers like the Asus X83v out there that cost $700 and put it to shame.
I hate windows and mac almost equally. mac sucks more only because of how fucking pathetic their programs are, windows at least has SOME usefulness.

The only thing that windows has over mac is gaming. Other than that, windows is a shit OS.

I have seriously considered jumpin on the bandwagon and going mac. Which is very unlike me. Only reason is that I only use the pc for email and internet with occasional ms word and excel. No gaming AT ALL.

From what I've seen of it, Windows 7 should change that.
