I use media player classic for everything with the L-Lite codec pack installed. I haven't run across anything it wouldn't play.

It would be nice not to have to have another player....

I thought win mplayer would do it but NOOOO... it wants to be stupid.

i assume you are running XP? the vista codec pack updates mplayer so it'll handle damned near any format. including matroska

I use the Defiler codec pack on all of my machines, with no complaints.

Another vote for Divx. Haven't installed any other codecs and most things I can play no problems. Sometimes you have to go get something specific, but not that often.

K-lite Codec Pack's Media Player classic is fast, compatible, and even plays .flv files you steal from You Tube.

VLC FTW!

WMP Is only good for playing MP3 and Windows Format files(WMA)

VLC plays pretty much everything, and has a Browser Plug-in
