My choices are 690 ktm or a husky 610sm. Either of the two. Im not sure im trying to do as much research as humanly possible. I want good power, light weight and lowish maitenance.(want the husky 510smrbut way too much maitenance).
Anyone and everyone offer your input please.

Whenever I have the money for a next bike it will probably be a sumo. I have no personal experience with either bike but have read a bit about them. One thing I have heard about Huskys is the parts can be hard to get. KTM may or may not be any easier for parts.

I would be really torn between either of these bikes and going all out with a plated WR450F or CRF450X. I know the maintenance intervals suck but something about a bike making around 50hp and weighing well under 300lbs on the street may make it worthwhile.

I also second supermotojunkie.com there is a ton of good info on that site.

You don't mention low maintenance and KTM/Husky/Husa in the same sentence. Or cheap either.

Compared to the really high strung Supermotos the ones Antwanny is looking at are low maintenance. With the racing oriented models you are looking at oil changes (motor and tranny) every 3-5 hours. Valve adjustments are in the 10-15 hour range. 100 hours is considered good longevity out of a top end. Bottom end is probably 250-300 hours.

If you figure a 35mph average the maintenance gets involved and expensive quickly.

Like I said before, I am very interested in the balls out supermotos. It is just hard to wrap my mind around changing the oil more often than I put gas in the sportbike.

yeah, but the don't cost as much as my Busa, like the Husky and KTM.

Plus there are tons of mods out there for DRZs

I like the DRZ as well. Nothing too exotic just bulletproof as hell.

I haven't ridden a 610, but I've tried out a couple 690sm's. If I wanted a sumo, I'd get the 690 no question. You won't be wishing for more power, that's for sure, and it handles like a dirt bike.

610 is more of a real sumo with real dirt roots, the 690 is more of a street bike. Don't know if it'd be any good offroad. 610s can be had stupid cheap late in the year when shops like Malcom Smith start discounting, I've seen 'em listed for $6100. The 690 is probably more reliable--the 610 has some issues, throttle cable among them. The DRZ is a bulletproof tank but it's pretty slow.

How does the 510 compare for you performance wise? Is the maintenance as bad as I have heard?

Compare to what?

The 510 is a MX bike, not a street bike, so you have to treat it as such. The 06+ ones added a little oil capacity and some ignition changes but you still have to change the oil every 8 hrs of operation or so. Compared to other MX bikes and MX-based sumo conversions, it's easier, but compared to a street bike that weighs 200+ lbs more, it's a pain. As a weekend / trackday toy it's no big deal. Changing the oil is a 10 minute job, there are no panels to remove. Once the valves take a set they tend to stay that way. A Husky will last 4-5x as long as a Honda if broken in correctly.

Concerning performance I was talking about compared to the 610 or 690, the more street oriented sumos. I have read that the MX based bikes are a night and day difference compared to the street biased bikes.

The information you gave about maintenance is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

The Husky 610 isn't as race oriented as the 510 but it's still a high maintenance engine. The KTM 690 is a big different. It's all depending on which one you get, the SMC or SMR. The SMR is a lot more race oriented. As far as the KTM 690 being more street oriented, that's called the 690 Duke.

If maintenance is an issue then the DRZ400SM is the way to go.

Or if going balls to the wall is the whole idea behind a supermoto then cross off the Husky, the Hussy, the KTM, the Suzuki, the Ducati, the BMW, the Honda and sign on the line for the Aprilia SXV. If you want a true race pedigree motard with blinkers & lights, then the SXV is it. The SXV4.5 has zowy oomph. The SXV5.5 has shit-in-your-pants oomph.

Find me a used SV with ABS and I'll sell you my heavily modded DRZ. 42 hp on the dyno (32 stock) and you just change the oil every 1500 miles. :D

well test rode a drz and a 525 mx that was plated for ca(legally). Jesus both were fun the drz was way to gutless at higher speeds. The ktm was a blast, absolutely awesome. Could see myself getting into a ton of trouble on either.
