View Full Version : So I'm thinking about trading the bike for a sports car....

Yeah, I know..... I love the 929 a lot, but I rarely get to ride it anymore. I'm also wanting to get back into something fast with 4 wheels and most likely a turbo that I can run in the rain/cold/heat/whatever. Now assuming that you were in my situation and were pretty well set on trading your bike, what would you want?
I really dig the older RX-7's with the 13B turbo'd. Had an '87 a few years back and let it go as I think the apex seals were bad. I should have fixed the car as it was in killer shape and really didn't have anything else wrong with it. I want to make sure that whatever I get has some sort of rear seats for my daughters (in case I need to pick them up from school or something) and to keep insurance costs down a little bit. What else is there other than the played out Civics? (Not that I am against having another quality Honda product.) I just want something reliable and quick. Talons/Eclipse is high on the list too.

Mini Cooper S... but then, that's what I did
Get a CRX, with a little work thay can be made into a beast. Also most subarus, the 2.5 rs comes to mind.

No Mini for me. I like 'em, but I don't dig 'em. ;) I like the CRX but it's getting ever so hard to find one nearby in any kind of good condition. I also don't like that there's not much room in them. I've been leaning on the Subaru fence for some time now. It's hard not to when Ken Block makes 'em look so damn good! :D

I only proposed it because of my own experience with them.
CRX is ok - but only if you mod the crap out of them. And, there is no room in them
I'd say Miata or Mini for the return - very little money into them for a great performing vehicle. Though, Miata has no room in them for more than two people and a stick of gum. Maybe I should ask what you want it for? Street, track, other??
Talon's are pieces of crap. Subarus are nice - but, you need to go with a WRX to make it worth your while...

But Miatas dont have rear seats which he wanted.
Talons are crap. Eclipses are ok but once you start adding power they become very unreliable. The only Mitsubishi that can handle power is the evo. WRXs are awesome cars except for the transmissions. I was looking at these too but the 5 speed in them cant handle any power either. To stand up to any abuse youd have to swap in a 6 speed from the STi.

Talon is a rebadged Eclipse.
The WRX tranny can't handle over 285HP. STI tranny has heavier duty internals.

Also need to know your price range (I assume under $10K?), and how much time you're willing to spend fixing it.
I'd go 300ZX TT, assuming you could actually find one in good shape for a good price. Doubt it.
Get a 2nd-gen Integra.........Why? Because they're better-looking and less played-out than the 3rd Gens. A black one looks sick lowered on dark bronze rims.
Or get a Prelude.

How many real sports cars cost only 4 figures, and have a rear seat?
Miata? No rear seat, and too fucking noisy on the highway.
MR2? Nice, but no rear seat.
Old Porsche 944? People try to ask an arm and a leg for them, and parts are too expensive.
RX7? Crap reliability and fuel economy.
Mustang? Camaro? I would not consider them sports cars.
You could try looking for a 2nd gen Supra Turbo, they'd be less expensive than the 3rd gens..........But still, that's a sports coupe or GT, not a real sports car.

For sport AND utility needs, I vote STi as well.
However I prefer something more sport-only vs an all around vehicle.

Corvette? You can find one for under 10k... Yea I know, American cars don't count oh and no back seat, shoot! Heck, I know where there's a low mileage Supra for a decent price that the guy might even consider a trade (car lot). I personally, like the Subaru as well or a Lanzer but what do I know, I've owned a Talon and a RX7 and had zero problems with either of them.:idk: BTW I really like the RX8 but I'm not sure what kind of price range you're trying to fit. Hell, get a Cobalt SS, I hear that they can be souped up cheap and are reliable. Gee, I know that I've abandoned America with bikes but I don't want to think that we can't produce anything worth while anymore...:pat:

Yea, crappy American cars. 08 Vette here that has never seen the dealer except when I got anal raped by a dump truck. Plus I'll rape any car you have listed. Even the Supra unless it has a LOT of work.
A little info on your price range WOULD be helpful.

Vette has a whole lot of back seat room... And, it's not that expensive to get into, but the tires are a bitch to buy and you WILL go through them.
Hell, why not an M3? Backseat, plenty of power and handling...

One of the reasons I drug my S10 out of the field today is I wanted to get it working, but in a few years once I have a decent job I want to put a v8 into it like I've planned since I was 15.
That's providing every V8 isn't destroyed from Cash for Clunkers.

You know, if my finances were different and I wanted a new car, it would be hard to pass up! They have a white RX8 that has a $5000 rebate on it now. Add the $4500 for the CFC program and that makes a hard deal to pass up! I actually like my Bonneville, it's very comfortable. Which is nice after getting off my GSXR but I've liked those RX8s since they came out! Besides, I had a RX7 when I was younger and it was easily one of my favorite cars!

:D You guys/gals are too much.
As far as price, I'm poooooooor and need something that I can swap straight up for. I realize that limits me pretty badly, but is still doable. I guess I should have called it something else other than "sports car", maybe a sporty all around, 4 seater with turbo that handles and runs like hell!! lol I really don't know what I want. Acura's are very high on the list, the RX-7's would be if I could get one that had an awesome engine in it that I knew would be reliable. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the mid '90's M3's. Those things just looked awesome to me back in the day and still do when I see a nice one. The Miata is out.......simply no room in them for me. I gave some thought to the Mini today and to be honest, I don't know much about them so I can't totally rule one out but am sure that they are out of price range. I could deal with something American, but I am Asian at heart. ;)
I used to work for Mitsubishi back in the mid 90's and I have trouble understanding where all the hate for the Eclipse/Talon comes from. Those are some killer running cars, and not hard to work on either. Lots of aftermarket support and plenty of used stuff floating around to be had cheap. The Starion/Conquest would be on the list if they were more plentiful and not ran all to hell already. I actually would love to have one of these. The Cobalt is a formidable ride if built. You can't really call the engine American though, as Saab, GM and a handfull of others were in on the design and engineering of it.
Maybe I'm shooting for the stars here...........maybe not. :D

AAAANNNNNDDDDD started to crumble!!! I replaced mine. Both of these cars were super fun! They handled very well, my Squad Leader hated me because my Manta Gt would hang with his Iroc (with "crossfire fuel inj" yet) that he had shipped over! In fact, my best friend had a Capri Gt and we used to race home the 10 or so clicks from Schwabach to Schawnstetten everyday! Fuck the backseat, get a C4 Vette convertible with a 6 speed. It's a true supercar; 0-60 in 5 seconds, aluminum A-arms, independent rear, traction control, ABS, full tilt front end, 155 MPH. Trick bit of kit.
That's what I did, and I'll tell you what, it's almost as much fun as a bike.
Add to that, the fact that those cars have bottomed out (price-wise), and are starting to appreciate, and you won't lose any money, even if you sell it a few years down the road.
I got mine 5 years ago for $14K, and today, it's worth....$14K.
