A motorcyclist was killed Monday in a collision with a motor home on Highway 101’s Conejo Grade after he slowed rapidly in front of the recreational vehicle in an apparent road-rage incident, authorities said.

The motorcyclist, a 57-year-old Ventura man, was killed about 12:22 p.m. on southbound Highway 101 near Camarillo Springs Road when he collided with a roughly 30-foot motor home driven by Michael Antoine, 68, of Thousand Oaks, said Officer Terry Uhrich of the California Highway Patrol’s Moorpark office.

Authorities did not identify the motorcyclist because they were still working to notify relatives.

The motorcyclist and Antoine were both traveling about 55 mph when the collision occurred in the right lane, authorities said. Witnesses and Antoine later told authorities that the motorcyclist had made obscene hand gestures, pulled in front of the motor home, then slowed down dramatically, Uhrich said.

Antoine did not have time to react and struck the back of the low-slung custom motorcycle, causing it to become stuck under the front of the RV, authorities said. The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike, run over by the motor home and dragged underneath for about 75 feet, Uhrich said. Unable to steer, Antoine continued about 500 feet and hit the center divider, Uhrich said.

The frame of the motorcycle carved a deep groove in the roadway as it was pulled under the motor home. Antoine was not injured.

The cause of the initial confrontation was unclear, but investigators believe the motorcyclist intentionally slowed in front of the motor home, Uhrich said. There were no other vehicles that would have made the motorcyclist slow to avoid them, he said.

“It looks like partial road rage,” the officer said. Antoine was not suspected of any wrongdoing, Uhrich said.

Several Ventura County firefighters were on Highway 101 on their way to another crash when they spotted the collision just after it happened. Fire Capt. Barry Parker was in the engine that pulled over to investigate after he and other firefighters saw smoke from the collision, he said.

“I thought I had an RV fire,” Parker said.

The firefighters instead found the motorcyclist lying in the roadway. They gave him emergency medical aid, but he did not have a pulse, and they pronounced him dead at the scene, Parker said. “We did what we could,” he said.

While he couldn’t recall any other cases of motorcycles slowing rapidly in front of motor homes, Uhrich said local CHP officers field 911 calls about erratic braking and obscene gestures every day. “It’s impatient driving,” he said.

The fatal crash came amid a statewide increase in motorcycle fatalities. They climbed 8.1 percent in 2008, to 560, compared with 518 in 2007, according to the state Office of Traffic Safety.

Motorcycle deaths have risen consistently since 1998, when only 204 fatalities were reported.

While authorities are still trying to determine why, young men riding fast sport bikes and older men returning to motorcycles after a long absence appear to be factors, said Chris Cochran, a spokesman for the Office of Traffic Safety.

I think you guys are being narrow minded. The fuckin rv guy probably damn near ran him over, like in a lane change so the guy got pissed and was explaining it to the man. Problem was, the rider couldn't ride well enough to back up his "mouth".

I have done similar countless times. I have also master the 6" cut off. Especially on the new hog. But unlike when I was on the rocket, most drivers tend to fear the hd rider more. Hmmm...

Not road rage, its an obvious case of tassling! The cruiser pilot must have passed, cut in to close due to lack of straight line umph and got a tassle caught in the RV grill. Unable to get free he was sucked under by his own saddle bags...what a shame!

Isn't a pretty well known fact that motorcycle vs. any other vehicle will result in a loss on the motorcycle's part? Especially an effing motorhome?! Who cares if the guy almost killed you while changing lanes? You survived just so you could die because you are angry?

We'll never know the truth but who's to say his bike chain didn't come off, his brakes locked up or the engine failed or something mechanical that caused him to slow/stop and this guy in the RV just wasn't paying enough attention and just ran him over.

could have been the biker being a dumb ass too but no one knows....

So biker made some obscene gestures, pulled in front of motor home, then all the sudden his engine siezed, or chain broke, or whatever? :skep: Weird chain of events but not impossible. :skep:

If the RV is moving over and the driver does not see the bike, then bike should just share the lane with the RV or speed up. Now..the biker is killed because of stupidity.

Well lesson or not, they tend to back way off and dont ever come near me again.

Weaving from side to side in your lane has a tendency of getting the same result

He could have very well been doing a brake check...who knows. Why else would a motorcyclist give obsene gesture to a cager unless the cager did something stupid that caused the biker a nice "oh shit" moment and some road rage? I know I wouldn't brake check a motorhome just like I wouldn't do it to a semi. That's just nuts. :screwy:

I rarely brake check when I'm riding. I will, however, weave from side to side. It usually gets their attention and they don't want to be around some crazy biker so they back off.

I've seen a few people do it while riding. Wade used to light up the rear tire when he did it.

Brake checking a motorhome was a stupid move IMO. But it doesn't keep me from feeling bad for everyone who's lives it involved.

Too true, brake checking cars/RVs/Semis on a motorcycle is fucking retards. It's not just going to be a minor fender bender like in a car. Give em a good ole kick to the sheet metal if you got that much of a problem with them or a nice big spit like Rider suggested..

Yep I agree! Even when I've done it myself I know that it's stupid! Now a days I just light up my brake lights... that almost produces the same effect. :idk: It's like when we used to do wheelies down the freeway, it's dangerous sure but if you know what you're doing... I won't try to justify 90% of the shit I've done on a motorcycle in the past. Anymore than I'll try and justify the crazy shit I've done off a bike either. IMO if the guy on the bike had known what he was doing, he could have frightened the driver of the RV without risking his own life.

BTW damaging someone's vehicle (bb's, marbles, kicking, etc) can just as easily result in death if you fuck with the wrong motherfucker on the wrong day!

My buddy Junior, RIP, used to carry almost pinball sized ball bearing with him in a tank bag. Well, one day, day before he died-no bs, a guy in a red Chevy pick up accidentally cut us off flying down Leonard on our way to Grand Haven. So Jr passes him and hits him with a volley of 4 or 5 balls and takes off! FUCK! Now it's on! This guy chases us for the better part of 5 miles before he finally "gives up" and we lose him in the twists and turns of the road. Apparently, the guys in the back had a couple close calls!:panic:

Well, we get to GH and are sitting in our normal "biker lot" by the beach. I convince Jr that maybe he should take off because that guy looked pretty pissed. Not 10 minutes later, here comes that guy in the pick up screeching to a stop maybe 2 feet from our bikes. Screaming and waving a rifle. You could see 3 maybe 4 "divots" on the body of the truck and a nice crack in the windshield! You could also see the paper dealer plate in the rear window.... Of course the guy starts screaming about how he's gonna call the cops and we agree that we're sure that they'd be interested in how he tried to murder guys who had nothing to do with it.... He left, we left, Jr died the next day doing wheelies on a side street off Alpine...:idk:

These days, I just avoid the idiots and shake my head as I go past... what's the point? If you do anything to them, they'll just be angry with you. People don't accept responsibility or blame anymore. I picked up my gf's bike last night from her work because it was raining and she was afraid to ride it. Some girl in a Honda totally cut me off. I just rode around her and gave her the "thanks for almost killing me" look and rode on. What's the point? It's not like they're going to learn anything. Shit, if I were to do anything then I'd be possibly facing criminal charges. :idk:

I generally don't think it is worth it to "teach a cager a lesson" which will probably not sink in. I am certainly not going to brake check a vehicle with a driver who is not paying attention (they did something stupid to piss me off in the first place) and has shitty brakes when I am the only crumple zone on the bike.

Doing something stupid that risks my life because someone else did something stupid that risked my life doesn't make much sense to me.

The only people I brake-check are the fags who come up behind me and do a really slow pass so that their front bumper comes only 2-3 feet from my rear bumper. I think it's some kind of ego statement......like "Ooooh I just passed you with inches to spare, ha ha I owned you."  I notice it's always guys under 30 y/o. Anyway, when I see them about to do that shit, I let off the gas so that there's engine braking, which forces them to go "oh shit" and jerk their wheel at the last second to get around me. Or I'll even pull the e-brake slightly.......Not enough for them to see I'm doing it, but enough for them to realize that maybe next time they should start passing someone a little earlier.

I had a guy on a motorcycle brake check a box truck I was in. It pissed me off so much I was screaming "Run the fucker over" as the guy took off. We were in a box truck loaded down with pool tables so there was no hope. No clue what we did, other than maybe driving the speed limit or a little under. He was on some old late 80s early 90s standard and when he took off I didn't think it moved that much faster. Honestly I think a mid90s camaro could have ran him down.

But it reminds me of that video where a scooter cut off some big truck and just become mush. I need to find that video.
