This isn't a new concept. I remember as a kid hearing about how an asteroid killed of the dinosaurs. So just like Hollywood, the news media is out of ideas now, so they reprint old news?

This is the first time the scientific community has agreed that only one asteroid killed them all. It was believed by many before that it would take multiple strikes to cause that kind of catastrophic loss. Or another event all together.
