Opinions on a SV
Which is the better deal for $2,700? Both are in good condition.
03 SV650 6,300 miles - This is from a friend so I know the history of the bike 06 SV650 14,000 miles |
Any goodies or all stock?
|
Quote:
Minimal goodies not worth mentioning like a fender elim and tank bra  |
seems like a decent deal on both, I like the black frame of the newer ones better.
|
I do too, and the 06 is that odd blue color which I am not sure if I like or hate yet. I am not crazy about the silver on silver but heck I just want something cheap to ride until I get out of school and can afford what I really want.
I know 14,000 isn't a lot of miles, but it just seems that way in comparison to 6,000. Do I have to worry about anything with that kind of mileage? |
Quote:
Probably better to go with the one you know the history. |
The mileage doesn't matter, I put almost 52K on my '02.
Get your friend to lower his/her price on the 03. If not, get the 06. |

Did you have to do anything major to your SV other than basic maintenance? |
|
That's an good deal for an 06 if it's in good shape with no accidents. I paid $3500 for a crashed 05 with 9k 3 months ago (with more goodies though).
I'd pass on the 03. I don't like the silver frame and some stuff was changed considerably in 04 which means that some aftermarket parts are 04+ only. |
I'll respond here too (responded on facebook too :D)
I personally would go with the 06 (even though I love my 03) because, as stated above, a lot of aftermarket goodies only fit on the 04 and up models. The 03 was really a generation of it's own and sometimes it's tough finding things that will fit. I'd also be wary of that few miles on the SV - depending on how it was stored, you could be looking at a lot of dry rot (rubber bits and such) and brake line issues (moisture in the lines). Just my .02 |
Count me in for the '06.
|
Quote:
The 03 is stored outside (Logically, I would hope under a bike cover or some shade...) as my friend doesn't have a garage. Girly question-- what do you think of the 06 color? |
Don't ask me - I only like the copper which is why I have the 03
|
Quote:
There was a major design change in 03 (they became fuel injected and got an all-new frame with straight edges). But after that, they all looked the same after that. I stopped paying attention to them though, so I don't know the details. |

However, after about 18K mine developed a rough vibration at 5K rpm, under hard accel. It vibrated the whole bike. Tried doing valve adj, carb syncs, new chains/sprockets.......Never improved, so I just lived with it. But it was irritating. Might have been an imbalanced clutch basket. |
Ok I this may sound ridiculous but the 06 guy posted his bike with no year or miles...and his selling point was that it had a K&N filter...that adds to my wariness
|
Ask for maintenance records on the 06. Anyone with some sense would keep something...I would think.

There are also some length differences between the 03 and the 04+ (the 03 SVN was 2125 mm (83.7 inches) long while the 04-06 was shorter at 2080 mm (81.9 inches). If I recall correctly, ground clearance was also reduced from 155 mm in 03 to 150 mm for 04-06 (though it remained at 155 mm on the S models). It may not seem like a lot but a lot of the most common upgrades (like the seat and rearsets for example) are not interchangable from the 03 to the 04+. Oh, and the frames were silver up until 05. ;) |

Receipts honey bun. I say got '06. If it doesnt work out you can always haul ass on it to his place. Stop a few blocks away. Open up the tank cap, stick a shirt down it, light it, then haul ass and jump off at a high rate of speed, letting it crash into his place. I crack myself up sometimes. |

Bought it from a bankruptcy proceeding on a dealership. |
Which one is it badged, UM or Hyosung?
|
UM
|
UM.... But, as long as we're talking THAT kind of money THIS: http://images2e.snapfish.com/2323232...43534343nu0mrj
Would be a great deal at $3900, you fly into BWI and ride it home...........I'll throw in a tank bag, soft luggage and a full tank of gas.....and dinner at Texas Roadhouse..... |
^ that was the bike that the 1st-gen SVS ripped off

What are you, a drug bike dealer?

I guess no one is reading the title.

Chose to ignore................
|
Thread jack in session....I will revive the thread when I know more about the bikes in the next couple of days.
I am hoping to see the 06 on Wednesday and I am meeting 03 friend that night. |
I like the blue. I'm just not sure if I'd like a naked no windshield bike as a daily rider. Maybe BIG city and little highway usage.
The frames on the newer ones are a lot spiffier looking than the old tube ones. |
I answered on fb...
the valves have to be checked by a pro - and it's only maintenence you'll have to do on either bike, won't make or break a sale. check tires, chain, brake pads, that sort of 'consumable' thing - things you'll have to replace sooner or later - if it's sooner on one and later on another, add replacement to the cost. |
06.
The blue will grow on you, it kind of color changes with different light. Have around 15K on my 05 right now, no issues. |

what did y'all end up doing to the front forks?

I think so sounds right

You guys think it will make much of a difference if I just change the fork oil first and do springs and stuff later?

It would only take an hour or less. Get a hand-pump so you don't have to take the forks out. Yeah, you won't get all of it out that way, but so what. |
Quote:
|
Forks need to be completely extended. If u don't have a front stand, throw a cinch strap over a ceiling beam in your garage and loop it around your triple clamp. Also pull on the forks, otherwise they won't fully extend.
|
I have an SW Motech center stand and I put a jack under the engine up front to get the front off the ground. Thanks though
|
Be careful when you unscrew the caps, they'll still have a little bit of spring pressure on them.
|
"You'll shoot your eye out!"
 |
Just ordered my springs and fluid from Sonic Springs

Way back when there was a place that if you gave them a rear shock they would respring it or something....Its been a few years and I can't remember the company and have lost any documentation. I think it ran me about $300. Any ideas? It wasn't racetech... |
Quote:
|
I forgot the name of that place, something like svraceshop. Ask on the svrider board, or better yet, the socalsvriders board, they are good peeps. It's very common to just buy a used GSXR shock for $50 off Ebay and send it to a shop to get it resprung and revalved.
|
gina buy the bike then buy my shock thats a win win
|
Quote:
I think thats it but when I look at their site i don't see anything. I asked a while back when I thought I was getting another 03 before dipshit decided to take it on the track and crash it...Non the the svrider peeps seem to know. Brett from CF sold me his gsxr shock years ago for like $20. |

Quote:
He's not dipshit if that is what you are thinking...it was a friend of a friend who was going to sell me his 03. Remember I sold my 04 to Laurie, Bondo's GF. |

So was dipshit anyone I knew? |

Looking at both bikes tomorrow with Evan. Hopefully I will have a new bike by then. Its going to be hard parting with money though. |
Off to go bike shopping now
|
Well, which one did you bring home?
|
Update or the thread gets deleted.
|
Well I am a brand new owner of nothing
I couldn't make a decision so I decided to sleep on it. My ex husband Evan went with me to help me look and for opinions. We got to the 06 first and the bike was in showroom condition. The lighter blue color was a lot nicer in person. It does need a rear tire though, the tire is really square. Which I don't know why he said he had a new rear tire in his CL post...I was just about to fork over money but I did ask 03 Willy to meet me so I can look as his bike. I was thinking that man, I hate to have Willy come out just for me to take the 06. So Willy rolled up in the 03 and then I fell in love with that bike too! That one was also in showroom condition. I like the silver on silver. He had the bigger bikini faring (not as big as the Givi ones but bigger than the stock 06) in blue which made the bike look a bit funny but it didn't bother me. And I sat on that one and for some reason, even though it was the same bike, it just felt right. Its needs nothing- the tires are in great condition. So I am torn. Something tells me to take Willy's bike. But the bargain shopper in me thinks that the 06 is such a great deal that I should get that one. But like Laura said, I have to add in the extra costs and the 06 is going to cost me more in tires and I still have to get an extra seat (which I already have for the 03). I'm not worried about resale since I plan on keeping the bike for a while, I am a poor student so I am more concerned about upfront costs. 06 guy has money, he had a bunch of toys in his garage. If anyone needs the money more it would be Willy and he is an awesome guy. And though I can speculate that the 06 have been taken care of, I know Willy babied his. So I am sleeping on it tonight. I called up 06 to give him to let him know I need a day and he told me that he just got a call and someone wants to look at it tomorrow so he can't hold it for me. Not sure if it was BS or not since the bike has been listed since January...but I told him hey if someone else takes it before me, then it made my decision making a little easier. |
Somehow I think you'd be happiest with the '03.
Call it a hunch. |

oh you'd totally be happy with an '03, I know
|
I'm still '06. Story or no story.
|
I'll make the phone call after class tonight. Maybe 06 guy will call me and drop the price if that guy who is supposedly going to look at it doesnt buy it.
|
I flipped a coin. Heads for 03. It landed on tails. I flipped again. I guess its the 03.
|
Badly squared-off tire screams stunter

Go with your gut Gina, don't second guess yourself.

Sadly, my middles are flat.
If someone stunts a lot. Can you fell it in the suspension? Wouldnt the fork seals possibly be leaking? |
Either that or there will be a ton of shredded/melted rubber all over the undertail.
|
Decided on the SV, gave Willy a call on my way back from school tonight. He seemed surprised that I didn't take the 06
He should be dropping it off on Saturday! Sending the extra seat to Sargeant tomorrow! Homie- I think its squared from commuting. Ranger- I am barely 5'2 and a fluctuating 100 lbs, I cant touch the floor or lift a Katana off the side stand  |
Quote:
you going to shave the seat down and lower it like with your last one? |
Quote:
I should be able to get the balls of meet feet down with seat shaving and thick soled boots. I only had the SV lowered for about a week so I can get more footing until Vinny did a chop shop fender eliminator for me and we went over a pothole and the license plate got mangled from hitting the rear tire  so it was raised back to stock that day. |
