You can see my chain and you know it's clean

So tonight I purchased some equipment for my motorcycle. I bought a box of black nitrile gloves (excellent for working on anything because they not only keep your hands clean, but they are textured for extree grip), a chain cleaning brush, and Motorex 611 and 622 chain cleaner and synthetic chain lube, respectively.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_iWoH2wsiCF0/S7...0/IMAG0067.jpg

The sad thing is, this is the first time I have ever done this to any of my bikes... yeah. I've owned motorcycles since 2006, had an SV650, CBR600RR, WR250F, FZ1, and an SSR 125SB-A and I've never cleaned and lubed the chains. Pretty terrible.

So after putting the bike up on the center stand (first bike I've had with a center stand, damn is it handy!) I did as the bottle instructed and sprayed the chain down with the stuff. I put the bike in neutral and just spun the rear tire with my hand while spraying with the other. I then got out the brush and did pretty much the same thing. Man! That thing was dirty! I had to use 3 rags to wipe off all the shit that was on it. Makes me wonder what was on my other chains, as this bike is relatively new ('09 FZ1).

Then I lubed her up using the instructions on the can, basically just spray and let dry.

MMM CLEAN!

I don't know much about shaft drive, but I would have to assume it's more costly to maintain than a chain.

I'm not a moron. I don't run the engine while it's on the centerstand...

Not an incredible amount more, unless it breaks. I change the final drive (180ml) and transmission oil (around 800ml) every 6000 miles, I don't think it's required that often. I think it's like every 12000 miles.

It was suppose to be sealed for the life of the bike, but that didn't work too well, so they made it every 12000 miles.

rIGHT, BUT HOW MANY BEEMERS HAVE BLOWN THEIR FINAL DRIVES? aND WASNT THAT MAJOR TECHNICAL ISSUE FIXED ON YOUR BIKE?

The previous gen GS before mine had a lot of issues, so they changed some things on the final drive on mine. It's still not perfect, but it's setup to change the oil easier and to check for the issue. Not as many fail on my gen.

They make rear stands... can be just as effective.

Gas Man 04-06-2010 12:21 AM

nOT FOR MY INTENDED PURPOSE. i DON'T HAVE ROOM FOR A REAR STAND THAT WON'T WORK ON MY hd CAUSE OF THE KITCHEN SINK, RECLINER, AND 42" LCD IN THE TOURPACK. cAUSE i WANT IT FOR "ON THE ROAD REPAIRS".

Switch 04-06-2010 12:22 AM

Hm. Well, just use a big rock.

Switch 04-06-2010 12:24 AM

Really, the gloves were the best investment.

Gas Man 04-06-2010 12:29 AM

bIG ROCK... CHECK WILL HAVE TO REMEMBER NEXT TIME.

GLOVES? YOU LIKE GLOVES? iT DOES MAKE CLEAN UP A BIT EASIER!

Switch 04-06-2010 12:34 AM

I think the gloves were like 12 bux for 200 pair

Gas could you even get your dead weight of a bike on a center stand if you had one?

Rode it to work this morn, cleaning it fixed a mysterious clicking noise...

I'm gonna tighten the slack on it tonight... then when I get my Scotts Oil Filter in the mail, she's getting the oil changed and the switch to Rotella T 5w-40. WOO WEE.

Trip 04-06-2010 09:02 AM

Remember when you didn't clean the sv chain and how fucked up it became.

Particle Man 04-06-2010 09:03 AM

My center stand was probably the best investment I've ever made for the bike. I throw it up on the center stand and it literally takes me less than 10 minutes for a basic chain cleaning and lube (every 2nd ride or so) and I do a thorough cleaning every month.

I remember the sprocket... that was bad. Missing teeth, I wish I still had that pic. I think it was missing 1/4 of the teeth on the rear sprocket.

That seems like almost too often...

It's served me fairly well over the years. :)

Trip 04-06-2010 09:21 AM

I did my chain maintenance every 250-300 miles. If I did more than that in a day, I did it at the end of the ride.

It was real easy to keep it clean that way. If I went a long time between cleanings it was much harder and used a ton more chain clean. This way I was able to clean it fairly quick.

Rider 04-06-2010 09:23 AM

Not really but it sounds good! :lol

ontwo 04-06-2010 09:31 AM

I typically clean my chain with kerosene, but the other day i was out. So I used Simple Green. It really worked great. I was kinda suprised. Then I put the Chain Wax on after the ride.

I never thought about a centerstand, but it would make lubing the chain much easier.

I've thought about the gloves, but I just use massive quantities of GoJo :)

Don't use WD40 as it displaces the grease in the O-Rings. I don't know about Simple Green, but I would say it might do the same thing. You should keep it away from aluminum as it apparently does nasty things.

Probably best to stick with Kerosene or an actual chain cleaning product.

Azoomm told me about Simple Green and I found it worked really well too!

Particle Man 04-06-2010 09:49 AM

I've used Simple Green for a while now.

I'm actually kinda annoyed because I went to buy more the other day and everyone was out of it in favor of some new Clorox Green crap.

I like the Bel Ray chain lube... goes on and dry's white... doesn't fling for shit... and it's easy to make sure you've got complete coverage.

Homeslice 04-06-2010 03:25 PM

I'd be nervous about using a brush.......Seems like it could damage the o-rings, or push dirt past them. I just use a rag.

It has been my experience that a brush just becomes another thing to clean....

Homeslice 04-06-2010 03:32 PM

I used a toothbrush on my SV's factory chain.........Only got 14K miles out of it. Of course, the fact that I let it sit in the rain and rust a few times might have something to do with that

Big, heavy, cumbersome... to name a few.

But with the drive train, no.

The honda goldwing may be big and heavy, but cumbersome is not what I would call it. That damn thing is balanced damn well. An average rider can manuever that thing surprisingly well. Remember the video of that dude doing donuts. That bike is very very well built for how big and it is.

You don't have to go with a goldwing either. I think the viffer's are shaft drive too.

But if I was too pick the least maintenance drive, I would go with the honda any day of the week over anything else out there.

tommymac 04-06-2010 03:55 PM

I am a bit more dilligent now with riding on and off the construction site, lots of dirt, dust and mud I have to ride thru getting in and out so I try to keep the chain and the bottom of the bike cleaned rather often.

Honda does seem to have a decent shaft. The Shadows and VTX's come shaft drivin.

I probably need to do a good overhaul on my chain. Ive had it for about 3k miles and its never been cleaned. i know the rear sprocket is black and its supposed to be silver lol. Its got a lot of crap stuck on it. I think im going to have to clean it this week. I didnt really realize how bad it was till i read this and started thinking about it.
