At the heart of the 848EVO is the Testastretta Evoluzione engine, significantly redesigned for a higher power output. All new cylinder heads, pistons, throttle bodies and camshafts combine for a forceful output of 140hp @ 10,500rpm and 72.3 lb/ft of torque @9,750rpm. All of this significant engine performance is wrapped in new black cylinder cases.

In addition to the more powerful engine, the 848EVO’s chassis and braking systems have been upgraded. A cross-mounted steering damper has been added for greater control of the steering system, and the welcome addition of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires will ensure maximum grip while delivering every last horsepower to the asphalt.

The 848EVO receives a massive upgrade to the braking system in the form of Brembo Monobloc calipers. These single-piece calipers are machined from solid alloy and achieve a higher rigidity and resistance to distortion during extreme braking. The resulting increase in hydraulic efficiency not only delivers incredible braking power, but also provides an enhanced and precise 'feel' at the brake lever.

All this combines to form the most potent, powerful and lightweight middle class sport bike available; both for the road or race track usage. For 2011, a special “Dark” version will be available; which unlike “Dark” editions of Ducati’s past will be a truly black bike from front to rear, giving the motorcycle an aggressive look and attitude.

The Ducati 848EVO Superbike will be available in North American Ducati Dealerships at the end of August, 2010. Impressively, MSRP will remain unchanged from the 2010 848 it replaces: $12,995 for the “Dark” edition, and $13,995 for Ducati Red.

I do like it, but can 848cc really be considered a middleweight? That's a lot closer to a liter than a 600, and nearly the same size as some of the stuff that was considered big-bore just a few years ago.

probably trying to clear out all the surplus parts before the rumored 2011 1198 makes its entrance. that, or they are worried about competition from bmw and aprilia and are trying to move some marketshare to the 600 market

:idk: I haven't ridden a middle weight Duc since the 748 BUT I have never been even slightly impressed by the 3/4 liter V-Twin... I know, here we go again but the story is told every weekend at the races. The middle weight V-Twin has never been able to hang with the 600s...and I can't ever understand why. Yeah, that's VERY sexy...but...

1) I can't say there's too much wisdom in a flat black bike. People try hard enough to run your ass over on a good day, you might live a lot longer if it's fucking fluorescent orange....but really, there's no guarantee even then. You could put fucking strobes on it, and some comatose cager cocksucker would still prolly pull out on ya.

2) Middlewieght my ass!

That said, if someone wanted to give one to me, I'd keep it, fo sho...

My understanding of middleweight comes from the old AMA rules: 600cc 4s, 675 triples, and 750 twins. They all produce similar peak HP but with different powerbands. 750 fours and 850 twins would really be in their own class IMO. I wouldn't call this a middleweight. Of course this thing is faster than a 600 four, it's like 40% bigger or some junk.

My 636 is that screaming-ass orange they only made for '04, and it's gorgeous. Doesn't help with stupid fucking cagers, though- even with the highbeams running, the M4 cranked up, and my 6'6" ass in reflective gear on it. People are just retarded.

Very nice bike. I've always compared it to the GSXR 750 as far as where it "fits in". I had no desire to buy the last 848...would have taken the 750 over it but I do like this one.

I'm going to disagree with the brightly colored bike theory... Next time you see a bike coming down the road, tell me if you can see weather it's black, white, orange, purple, brightly colored, dark colored, etc when coming up on you at a cross street. You can't, until after the point in which you would have noticed ANYTHING. The only thing you see when it counts is lights... if anything at all.

True that. I got to ride a bud's 848 on my favorite road out here. The whole time I was thinking about what a killer track bike it would be! Just the ergos alone, how they set you up for some agressive riding sold me. I didn't open it up too much because it wasn't my bike though.

I've never ridden an 848 but I have ridden a 999R and we have an R6 in the garage.

Handling was/is similar and very good with both. The power to weight is also similar but just delivered totally different. The R6 is gutless down low but the Duc was ready to roll as soon as you twisted your wrist. In the upper rpm the R6 would take over...where the Duc would peter out and be ready for the next gear...the R6 is just getting started...just wind that baby up !!

All in all both are great bikes...to me...they just deliver the power differently...the Duc down low and the R6 up top.
