HID question/opinions wanted..

Should I run all HID's in the 750? or just the low beam and just to higher intensity bulbs inthe high beams? the low beam is in the center, and the two high beams are on the outsides, all lamps illuminate when the highbeams are on..

Mr Lefty 09-13-2009 09:02 PM

I've got both HID's in my 600RR... I run the brights all the time when I ride. I'll turn them off at night when I approach a car... but I start out with them on so they've warmed up.

in the city (where 90% of my riding is anymore) I'll just run lows at night... and both hi/lo durring the day.... ANYTHING to help me be seen.

marko138 09-13-2009 09:25 PM

I've got an HID low beam that I haven't installed...had it since April.

Homeslice 09-14-2009 08:07 AM

Since the purpose of HID's is mostly just for looks, use them for the low's, since those are the ones that are on all the time.

Bright-colored gear helps your daytime visibility alot more than headlights ever will.

true... to a point... I notice headlights especially HID ones before I notice what the rider is wearing. even more so if the bike has on it's Brights. but that's only when the bike is headed towards me... most other angles the gear gets my attention first.

and HID's aren't just for looks... the difference between my low halogen and HID is night and day..

the delay does suck though when switching to hi's.

nhgunnut 09-14-2009 08:50 AM

I have to to say for me and the busa the HIDs make a a good deal harder to to "overdrive the head light" I run both high and low on the busa and will be converting the4 B King over the winter

I have HID's in my low beams on my R1. I just upgraded the bulbs to silverstars in the high beams. With the HID's I hardly use my high beams anyways. But when I do need them the silverstars are plenty bright.

The only thing i'll caution you about HID's, make sure you have a projector type lens. If you don't have a projector type lens, then your HID's will pretty much be useless and blind everyone.

I like my hids, of course I got 55 watt bulbs for my lows as well, so they are bright on low and OMFG bright on high! I killed a vampire crossing the road last night!

depends on the bike... the reason is the way the reflector is... in my ZZR the reflector for low was fine... but when i went to Highs (an actuator pulled by a magnet... so no delay as both lights were on all the time) the reflectors there didn't reflect properly and resulted in scatterd light. that could very easily blind someone...

On my 600RR... the beam is exactly the same as stock. I had pictures but lost them... but I compared them... the only difference was brightness and color... the cut off happened at the same height and was just as crisp.

but a very valid point... you'll have to be very carefull about how you aim your lights after you convert.(if you convert)

:skep: I just did an HID conversion on my Aprilia, and I ASSURE you, it had NOTHING to do with looks. The light output is in a whole other universe. The same can be said for my buddy who owns an 1125R with an HID

The HID was THE best mod I've ever done. Riding at night on the Buell was honestly dangerous with the stock bulbs. Do some research, they are some of the worst lights on the market. The HID was an amazing improvement. I can see soooo much.

Yeah I remember you talking about them... I'm thinking of putting a XB front end on my bike... but will be going HID with them for sure.

when I got the HID's for my ZZR and for my RR... I honestly didn't even think of "looks" other than from the stand point if DAMN I'VE GOT MY OWN SUN!

if I was after looks I'd be going with something more 8kish.. the blue or purple...

I remember riding to Indy last year (08) and there was a huge fucking truck with PURPLE HID lights... mother fucker that truck was annoying... he was pulling bikes so he had to get right behind us and try to keep up (must be a rule I'm not aware of, that when you have a bike, you must keep up with every bike you come across... even when towing your bike)

talk about distracting!

RACER X 12-07-2009 08:58 AM

going to anything above 4500k w/ HID is about looks, HIDs are a vast imp. over reg. bulbs. and i have 4500k

I'm running a 8k bulb now...only because it came with the kit I bought. If and when it blows I'll go with something a bit lower in color temp.

4500k with a 35w or 55w?

Cuz 55w washes out some of the color. My 5000k 55w is VERY white. Hardly any blue at all.

RACER X 12-07-2009 10:51 AM

4300 = best light output, and going w/ 5k isn' that much diff then 4300, it's people 8k+ and/or purple output. they are loosing the light output to get "that" color.

OreoGaborio 12-07-2009 12:23 PM

Agreed. Just wondering if you thought I was a poser for getting 5000k :D [/tonge in cheek]

Gas Man 12-07-2009 11:42 PM

Well I want some color. I wanted it in the 6k range. Just a hint of blue. So I ordered 35w 6k for the spots. Wanted the most amount of light. So wanted a 55w for the headlight... was told to order 8k to match the other lights.

I think some color makes you more visable in the sea of headlights. Both daytime and nighttime.

Poser? I don't think so.

Aw I ordered the 35w very purple for my GF mostly for looks but also considering that the "worst" HID still puts out almost twice as much light as a normal halogen. It's still an improvement performance wise.

What else is new? I haven't installed them yet but I'm guessing that they are going to be bright and fucking purple! As long as she likes them, that's all that counts. She's not going riding out in the country at night and I honestly feel that the purple color will attract attention and possibly avert accidents. She's not doing 130 mph at night or anything so it should be alright.

Per DDM, they should ship today or tomorrow.

Technically any aftermarket HID lighting system is illegal... but the purple ones, like TIGGER said, definitely get you noticed more...

Yeah... that's my point... all HID aftermarkets are illegal... just think that though they do get noticed a lot... it's gonna draw the cops attention... may not be enough to stop ya... but most certainly will be a "add on" if you do get pulled over...

plus... and this is JUST MY OPINION... it gives you that "johnny racer" look... so you'll be instantly more closely scrutinized. :2cents:

Because they are too super awesomely baddd azzzz to be confined to the socialist communistic ways of the LAW!

Fuck the POlice.

Amber Lamps 12-09-2009 03:41 PM

Considering that several cars come with them stock, I'm not sure how a common polic officer can determine if they are "legal" or not. Perhaps you replaced your headlight housing as well...

OreoGaborio 12-09-2009 09:26 PM

Yeah, by law, anything that's not DOT approved & should be (like lights, tires, etc) isn't legal for road use.

And I don't know of a single aftermarket HID kit that's dot approved... way too much red tape & money to get that, especially without replacing the housing, since the reflector was built for a different bulb.... Plus they're just way too super awesomely baddd azzzz to be confined to the socialist communistic ways of the LAW! :D

But like you said, so many cars come with them stock nowadays, if you go with a stockish color there's very little chance of you getting yanked for them... but if they're super purple, well... you're still not guaranteed to get pulled over, but the risk is certainly higher depending on how anal the cop is that you just rode past.
