What car would you buy under 10k?

If you could buy any car that will be your only vehicle (I take my bike to work tho), what would you get?

TommyHotWheel 10-21-2009 12:04 AM

New or used? A new car in that price range would be a shoebox with a rubber band. There is a 2000 BMW 528 in my area that I am looking at...$6000. I bet you could find similar near you.

Pretty vague question -- What do you want it to do?

Personally, I'd probably get an S2000.

If you needed 4 doors, then a 10-yr old Audi A4 or BMW 3-series. Good luck on maintenance costs though.

Or how about one of those Mercury Marauders.......those are somewhat pimp-looking.

any ford ranger regular cab longbed with the 5 spd 2.3. otherwise an older F250/350 with the powerstroke 7.3 and a 6spd trans. crew or regular cab.

My buddy has a California car 1983 240 Turbo wagon with a new engine and rebuilt 5 speed manual trans for $3300. Shit is tight...body in great condition, but paint is faded on the top portions.

BobTheBiker 10-22-2009 03:19 AM

Upon further consideration, I change my truck choice. Kaiser M35A2C with the whistler turbo, add some Goodyear XML tires, let me figure out what to spend the rest on, probably spare parts.

I could get one hell of a paint job and interior refurb done for the other $6700. :dthumb:

So... where was this $10k coming from?

The president of our company drove one for a while. Never had an issue with it.
Of course he only drove it once a week, the rest of the time he drove his vette or his jeep depending on weather.

This question sucks.
Married with two kids stuck with ONE sub $10,000 car?
Wife who doesn't want to drive stick?
Bunch of long legged freaks in the family who need space upfront and in the back?

fuck that...I'd rather walk.

Used Scion xB. Seriously. One of my husband's friends is 6'7" and he can sit in the back seat of my car and have plenty of leg room.

I think they make them in automatics.

pauldun170 10-22-2009 11:03 AM

we have a Mazda6 wagon that does family car duty (aka Wife's car).
My car....

I face the 10K question last year.
My driving consists of under 8 miles a day, back and forth to the train station and\or gym.
We get all kinds of weather. (since we occasionally get a decent amount of snow, the car has to make it out of the train station parking lot at night...low slung sports cars aren't gonna fly. Miata\S2000\Vette\Mr-2 can do it. I just don't like the idea of slowly demolishing the front air dam. There are a few commuters who do it with theirs. A nice slap in the face to those who think they need AWD drive as soon as the snow flakes start coming down. )

First instinct
Where da Miata's at!!?

(Wife in the background "Well what if I have to drive it in an emergency?!!" What about if we need Mazda breaks down?!!...Of course the logical answers are pointless so Miata is scratched of the list)

Long story short, I wasn't getting anything I wanted. Things I wanted either had 100K+ miles on em, or just looked they had seen better days.
If I get a Miata, I'd get nonsense come time to replace the Zx-11 (You already have a toy (Miata) and what's wrong with your old bike?!!)

So I went with a 4 banger Camry with a manual transmission. It had very low miles and since nobody who is shoppin a Camry wants a manual transmission the dealer was desperate to get rid of it.
It's a basic point a to point b car that can double as the family car.

It's lame. It's boring.
It sits in the train station parking lot most the time

She's 6'2, all leg and she simply can't drive a Miata without a Chiropractor visit every 2 miles.

I wish my wife would drive a stick. She knows how but refuses. The car she owned when I met her was a stick. But now it's to hard to shift, talk on the phone, apply makeup, fiddle with the radio, and fluff hair all at the same time. Something has to go...

I have a 2000 Subaru B4 RSK twin turbo I bought for 6k. 280 horse 4 door sports sedan.

You can get y2k Volvo S80s for like 5k around here. Solid cars if you're into luxobarges.

For sporty I might go S2000, for a truck... GM redflip

There is a 97 Peterbilt 379 for $9800 I would buy. :dribble:

Yeah when I pulled the list and posted it I  at some of the choices too. On the GTO for the sake of this post I pulled KBB 75k miles...private party sale in fair condition and it was a shade over $10k. :idk:

I wouldn't buy it but someone might.

The Skyline ? Good luck with that hunt too.

The Mustang must be a 6 banger which I wouldn't buy either and good luck finding a 2009 for that price as well.
