At first I thought the cop was an idiot for throwing on the lights and driving over.. :lol Then I realized it was probably to protect the rider..

CrazyKell 03-24-2010 10:18 AM

There's a huge thread about this on my local board about whether the cop caused it or not.

But for the life of me I keep reading the title as "don't let poop scare ya". :lmao:

I think its a bad spot to park period, can easily distract anyone comming around a turn like that. Or even cause someone to fixate and hit the damn car.

RACER X 03-24-2010 10:23 AM

the cop prolly did cause the accident, but moreso becuase the rider overreacted.

agreed prolly a combo of both. Guy saw the cop and prolly grabbed some brake and down he went. I can se ehi stiing there to nail guys crossing the double yellow

CrazyKell 03-24-2010 10:27 AM

What if it had been a deer? Or a kid? Or a bike? Or another car?

Cop may have 'caused' (in a roundabout way) the accident but rider should've been better.

Switch 03-24-2010 10:42 AM

Looks like someone just grabbed too much brake. I've been in this situation before up at the gap when you come around a turn and there's a cop. At that point, you are already leaned over, it's not like you are foolin' anyone. Yeah, put on some brakes to maybe decrease your speeding ticket, but come on, if you are riding like that, you gotta know that once that knee is down, you aren't foolin' a cop.

If hes on the right side of the road and not breaking hte speed limit is he realy breaking any laws by being leaned over?

Kerry_129 03-24-2010 10:48 AM

lol... Grabbing a handful of brake mid-curve FTL!

Speedracer42 03-24-2010 10:48 AM

Yeah you could lay the blame on ANYTHING sitting there. Bottom line was the rider was a fool for touching the brake mid turn with a lot of lean angle on street tires and poor trail braking skills. Owned

I don't know the speed limit on Mulholland, but do you really think he's going the speed limit or under?

Particle Man 03-24-2010 10:50 AM

IMO, it looks like the rider saw the cop, target fixated for a second (wobble moment), then grabbed the brake and used up what remaining traction he had in an "Oh shit, it's a cop" moment and went down.

going through the turn its entireley possible. Some signs in NY will have a curve at so many MPH and some you can go through at twice whats posted and some its whats posted or even less.

Yep - NY has a "recommended" speed sign so you can usually get away with going over, however, if something happens (accident) you'll get an "unreasonable speed" ticket in the blink of an eye

Thats what drives me nuts up in the catskills I will see a 15mph sign so I slow down and am like where the damn turn, then others will say 15 and its some sort of 180 degree hairpin turn. theres realy no consistency in the signs here.

don't let Patterson hear you - there will be a tax on turns next.
and consistency is against the law in this state.

t-homo 03-24-2010 11:05 AM

Our recommended signs are actually pretty consistent at half of what you should be going.

patterson cant see the signs anyway  beside some other inappropriate shit he did will surface sooner or later. In retrospect looks like spitzer wasnt all that bad he just banged a few hookers.

yeah - honestly, I could care less who the governor is banging as long as the state does what it's supposed to do.

Rider 03-24-2010 12:03 PM

It looks like the rider saw the cop, panicked, and grabbed a handful of brake. I don't think the accident would've happened had the cop not been there but I can't fault the cop for the wreck, the dumbass rider is to blame.

agreed. If there'd been a deer standing there or even a shiny freakin' rock I'll bet he would have done the same thing and ended up in the dirt.

It is almost as rediculous as blaming a tar snake.... almost.

Homeslice 03-24-2010 12:33 PM

Dumbass cops shouldn't sit in corners. Park at the end of a straight, or GTFO.

For all you know, that is at the end of a straight(coming from the other direction).

CasterTroy 03-24-2010 01:16 PM

Kawi shouldn't be making such fast bikes!! It's Kawi's fault!

Correct. OK, so park in the MIDDLE of a straight (as long as it is sufficiently long).

We dont know the SPeed of the Bike, But It doesnt really sound like he's going Balls Out. And having a SLip on makes it seem like you Going faster than you really are just based on the sound and RPM's...Hell My stock pipe If i keep it in first or second at a high RPM but keep it at the same speed It sounds like Im flying when in reality I'm not.

Did the cop cause it? No...If you see a cop sitting on the highway and you crash did he cause it? No, Your dumbass did for fixating on your target.

Im sure the cop was cool with the rider...Sucks about the Bike though.

I could have sworn there's a law that gives the right for an officer to write you a ticket for leaning too far, as it is "unsafe" to do.

Porkchop 03-24-2010 08:24 PM

Then cops need to learn how to ride. it's not unsafe to lean in a corner (properly), but we all know that. or, at least, we should

Avatard 03-24-2010 10:04 PM

Cop, panic, front brake, pavement.

njchopper87 03-24-2010 10:29 PM

There's a saying.. if you can see them its already too late. Modern radar is pretty hard to get around.

Heather's Dad 03-24-2010 11:01 PM

Did the camera person know the rider? Was the rider not looking ahead enough to see "something"? I don't even think the rider was speeding? Just one stupid event he will laugh about in a year or two.

that stretch of Mulholland is becoming Palomar North...time to find some new riding spots.

That camera guy sits there all the time taking pictures of everybody.

Laurel Canyon a "wonderfully twisty road" ?......lol, looks pretty weaksauce to me

If you want to get your rocks off zooming within 20 feet of rich people's homes and parked cars, do it on Soledad Mtn in San Diego, it's a lot more twisty than that.

Sounded like he had dropped a fair amount of speed entering the corner, and he didn't slide very far before standing back up... unless it's got a crazy low speed limit i doubt he was over.

And yeah, even if i were doing the speed limit, i probably would have done the same thing if i came into a corner and saw a damn police car sitting right there. It's just a reflex.

It's a bad situation... seems silly to say that the cop caused the accident, but i can't really say that i think the biker would have gone down if the cop hadn't been there...

I don't think he was speeding and if he was it wasn't by much. I grew up on that road and it's really twisty and someone atop the bike would put that much lean in just to get around. Now it wouldn't have been as dangerous if he would get off the bike.

I don't think the cop is at fault. It probably wouldn't have happened had he not been there, but we all have to be disciplined to maintain our line and our focus to the bike to have a safe ride. He let his knee jerk reaction kill a perfectly good line and stable bike.
