Bought A Douche/Mid-Life Car...

4 Attachment(s)
A 2000 Ford Mustang Gt drop top. Very clean, runs good. I haven't brought it home yet but I put a deposit on it Fri. $7500 out the door.

Pics from the website, I should have taken some on the test drive.:sorry:

BobTheBiker 03-29-2010 12:13 AM

you are hereby declared a douche.

Trip 03-29-2010 12:17 AM

Hope you have more luck with that generation than my wife did, her's always ran like shit, i was happy to be rid of that car when she traded for her accord.

Yea well, I'm pretty good with cars so we'll see.

Captain Morgan 03-29-2010 12:21 AM

How much fucking money do you make?? You're constantly buying something new. Are you in debt up to your eyeballs, or do you just make a shit ton of cash?

Apoc 03-29-2010 12:22 AM

No dude. Thats some of the ugliest year of mustang ever. And all mustangs are ugly. That just happens to be the ugliest.

Homeslice 03-29-2010 12:26 AM

That's an OK ride, but please put the stock tail-lights back on. Clear tail-lights are for 18-year old Civic owners.

Rangerscott 03-29-2010 12:35 AM

Cool beans. You gonna do anything to it?

No habits+no wife+no children+<$700/month bills+about $1200/week pay= me :)

I'm paying cash for the car and I have zero credit bills.

Well, I guess I need to change the body, replace the tail lights, replace the engine, buy some white Oakleys, etc...

Seriously, I'm going to put a hitch on it, buy a small trailer and use it to haul our bikes to the rally.

Agreed. I wouldn't even buy a car where the previous owner(s) put altezza lights on it - God knows what else they fucked with on it.

Have fun with it, Tigger. Nice toy.

I had a 99 (first year of that model); at about 8,000 miles, the transmission ate itself. Replaced under warranty, but still a pain in the ass.

wildchild 03-29-2010 08:08 AM

nice car. I actually like that body style myself. I've had a couple friends that had that style with very few problems.

her uncle and my brother in law are both professional mechanics, it wasn't from a lack of maintenance. The car was a piece of shit. It developed this weirdvibration issue about 10000 miles into her ownership and we took it to Ford and they pretty much told us it's just something you have to live with and a common issue.

Oh I wasn't implying that it was your fault... I'm saying that I can fix pretty much any problem the car will have... Out of curiosity, did you take it to more than one dealer? Not all mechanics are made equal you know... The car has 80,000 miles on it so I'm well beyond the teething issues you guys are talking about.

Oh for sure but I can tell Chevy horror stories all day! Or Yamaha horror stories for that matter! I don't like used but I also don't like payments so as long as the car doesn't cost me more than $6,000/year, approx. cost of payments on a new one, I'll be happy.

Yeah we did, we got a lemon. It was the car she always wanted and it was my nightmare. I was so happy when she agreed to trade it in for a new Accord. Now I don't have to do much of anything anymore because she has a reliable car.

Her's wasn't a teething issue, she bought it with 50k on it already.

101lifts2 03-31-2010 11:15 PM

Hate to say this Tigger, but that car is a total chick car. Convertible in all. lol

I wanted a stick until I drove one...The clutch travel is a dang foot! I thought I was back driving a 2 1/2 ton truck in the Army! I settled on the auto...to be honest, I'm not trying to go fast in this car. This is for cruising the beach or whatever.

I haven't picked it up yet. I'm $2,000 short, so he's holding it for me. I gave him $1,000 out of this check and I'll give him the last $1,000 next week and bring her home.

Net and it fluctuates, I did 17 installs this week at $100 each plus I also get commission on extras and gas money.:rockwoot: Of course I had to put in about 70 hours to get it...:panic:

Agreed.........Mustangs of that era had horrible stick shifts. Long travel, long ratio gears.......Plus engine pulses that could be felt through the shifter constantly......

As far as styling, yours is a lot better than the 95-98, which had no logic to their lines at all.

Given.

That car's widest point was above the door handle, making it look top-heavy and awkward.

The cleanest looking Mustang ever made were the late 80's models

101lifts2 04-02-2010 02:58 AM

I really like the 2010 Mustang. Gear shifting is pretty sweet not to mention the car looks good.

Avatard 04-02-2010 11:26 AM

I got my kid an '87 Mustang 5.0.

2K, it was cheap, and no one had hacked it up.

Needed a water pump. Takes 15 minutes to do a Chevy, so I bit.

I've got over two days in it so far. Everything that could possibly be a clusterfuck has been, including two stuck, sheared bolts (corroded from their mixing steel and aluminum), resulting in a cracked timing cover (made of hopelessly thin cast aluminum).

Every single bolt in the front cover assy. must be in before you tighten a single bolt [no dowel for location], the water pump is caught up in all this mess, and needs all of its bolts in at once to line up also. Front accessory drive? Large bracket on driver's side needs - you guessed it; all bolts in before you snug ANY, or it's a clusterfuck.

Ford. Now I remember.

An automatic makes it even more douchey... but if you like it, that is what is important. I hope you don't have the trouble that others have had.

Man, I replaced the exhaust, pulley in place of the smog pump, cleaned the combustion chambers and rebuilt the carb...all in one day on my 85' GT. I wish I could help ya with the pump. Throw it on a trailer and bring it to me, we will fix it, and throw a 5 lug conversion on it to boot.

TommyHotWheel 04-02-2010 10:46 PM

Lon, throw a good shift kit in that tranny and laugh all day long buddy.

Well, thanks Tom, I'm actually almost finished...I need only put back the last few bolts and brackets, and the fan & shroud, and I'm done. I only got sidetracked a few days because of the rains and floods here in NJ, and I should be able to finish one day later this week.

I just can't get over how much better the packaging on the small block Chevy is.

I'm thinking smoke leds which probably won't be much better in your eyes....

Hey, I'm thinking of starting a new thread but you all must have known that I can't own anything and not modify it right?

Here's what I'm thinking so far,

1. Cold air intake (Roush/K&N)-$200

2. 70mm throttle body and larger plenum-$240

3. Borla/Flowmaster exhaust-just FM muffler <$100

4 Hypertech programmer-$379

5. Shift kit- although the programmer may help me in this regard- <$100

6. Black top-$??? don't know for sure yet, I have an acquaintance that does this type of work. Maybe <$600

7. Black Rally Stripes (maybe)- <$200

8. Smoke L.E.D. Tail Lights with sequential turning signals- $150

9. Some minor stereo upgrades...- approx $1,000

10. Might drop the 17/18'' rims for some 18/20'' ones-black and chrome- found the rims on clearance for $600!!! So about $1400 total. Not to mention that the rims on it are stock Ford pieces with new rubber, so I may be able to sell them

11. Hidden hitch class 1 (2,000lbs) for pull a small 4X8 trailer and two bikes- $120 at U-Haul

So about $4500 total

Cutty72 04-04-2010 04:44 PM

Good list, though I'm not sure how a black top would look with the tan interior.

Avatard 04-04-2010 04:51 PM

Would make the car hot too, on summer days, when you wanna close up, and run the air.

Maybe...frankly, if I can't ride topless, it may as well stay in the parking lot and I'll drive the Bonneville.:idk: I don't hate the car but I also don't love it like I love the Bonnie for comfort and ride quality.

A lot of that stuff can be found used on the corral forum or craigslist if you dont mind saving a little cash and while you are at it, think about a bit of a lowering to make the stance right and a Mach hood would look nice on that car....nice and clean.

Fuck K&N intakes, they are not worth $200, especially if it just sits up high where it sucks hot air. The only intakes worth getting are ones that extend down towards the bottom of the engine bay where they can get cooler air.

Hmmmm.....!!!! Now that is a good point! But doesn't the air come in from the front of the car? I need to investigate!

Yes but the intake that I had on my Stang got the air from the bottom...but still out in front.

Nice list of upgrades and nice find. Mustangs are easy and fairly inexpensive to modify...I like those cars.

I know this is a Foxbody but same principal...

Not really. It's blocked by the radiator & condensor, among other things. In most cars, most of the air comes up from underneath.

Gets even worse at low speed or at a standstill. All that heat builds up.

The Mustang forum should be able to tell you what the best intakes are. Or you can just make your own out of ABS plumbing pipe. A cone filter with some pipe shouldn't cost $200.

I still have mine (01) but I gotta get down to Illinois to pick mine up.

I had a 5 speed but I got the last of the T 45s built in late 2000. I added a couple simple things from Steeda to get a nice short throw on the shifter and a shorter throw on the pedal too. The newer 3650s (02+) that went in had lots of issues down the road with their synchros. I don't know jack shit about the autos so I can't tell you much about the programmer and what it is worth to you.

The 4.6 is a bitch to make power with when your dealing with natural aspiration so don't waste your money on that throttle body. The stock intake sucks so what ever you go with will be an improvement but cold air is always a plus. And before anything else happens, get rid of those god damned tail lights.

Another choice to make is an x pipe over h pipe if you are gonna get rid of the cats. H pipe keeps a nice deep rumble but the x pipe typically makes more power, since that isn't an issue go for the H pipe with a healthy cat back.

Lowering it with a set of 18s or 19s looks good. I have had 17s on mine but 18s fill the wheels really well. 20s are usually a bit too for the body style/size of the car.

I drove a chicks 3.8 purple convertible sometime and despite all the detracting factors, I really enjoyed cruising around in a convertible.

I have 17/18s on it now. I have to pass emissions every year so I'm not sure about removing the cats... I'm looking at tail and head lights now. Probably go with smoked led tail and projector fronts.

:?:

I changed the water pump on my 83 GT is less than 20 minutes. Twice.(don't ask)

How are you finding the car? I am starting to look for a GT vert of that generation, because they are so damn cheap!

How do I like it? I fucking hate it. It's a fucker to work on, and it has an AT.

Maybe if it had a stick, I'd hate it less.

My kid likes it.
