grips

Ok odd question but how often do change your grips? The only reason I ask is that I can remember changing grips in the past, but its been like a once every other thing, this year I'm on my 3rd set on the CBR and 2nd on the KLR. The KLR got a few thousand miles out of the last set of grips, but the CBR got maybe 250 miles out of a set of renthals before I wore through the rubber to the bar. In the past I am guessing I was getting about 10k out of a pair of grip

Rangerscott 07-21-2011 01:46 AM

Over 50k on the vfr's stockers. Unless they are super soft, I dont see why theyd were out.

derf 07-21-2011 01:52 AM

Yeh I like the softer compound ones, but this last set just wore through in 3 rides plus a handful of short commutes.

they were wearing like they were pencil erasers, just rubbing right off

Trip 07-21-2011 06:45 AM

You are gripping the bars way too hard. Relax your grip.

Or you are buying shitty grips.

What he said.

The only time I've ever had to replace grips was if someone got too overzealous with tie-downs and ripped them.

I'm going on 9 years and 70,000 miles with the stock grips on the Busa and they look perfect. You need to relax there Skippy.

jtemple 07-21-2011 09:33 AM

I replace mine when the texturing gets worn smooth. Usually about once a year.

Rangerscott 07-21-2011 09:46 AM

Id hate to be your weiner.

Phenix_Rider 07-21-2011 09:47 AM

I chose the last option :boobs:

Otherwise, never. I don't see how they'd wear out, unless you are using pencil erasers?

Phenix_Rider 07-21-2011 09:49 AM

I have worn out my shift lever rubber boot though. Twice :lol

Beat it like it owes you money.

Cutty72 07-21-2011 02:20 PM

16K+ on the SV and 14k+ on the Buell and both still have stockers on there, both look fine.

Gas Man 07-21-2011 09:38 PM

Ever consider a cover?

I use these on my HDs. Not cause I'm wearing out my grips but because they are comfortable and I like that they increase the girth of the grip as well. (quit you perves)

Every 10k miles or so. The sun kills 'em for me.

not really, I should of made a joke about you having to use sleeves to increase your girth.

Gas Man 07-22-2011 05:53 AM

Go for it... maybe it will be funny or maybe I'll just ended up poping you in the face. PUNK! :D

TYEster 07-22-2011 07:24 AM

Very frequently... 20 to 30 hours.

Roughly translates to about 1000mi MAX. Depending on my average lap speed.(and track length)

There are a number of guys who have talked about using something similar on the TL forums... Man they are ugly, but the guys swear by them...

skiergirl 07-22-2011 01:34 PM

I've never changed a grip on a sport bike - never needed to I haven't found that they wear at all.

now MX grips about once per year it appears it will happen....

Same here... I have the Oxford heated grip wraps... they only worked for one trip, then the right grip went out. I tried fixing them but no use, but the wrap portion is still there, because the larger grip is more comfortable and kills much of the vibs from the 400cc thumper

Rangerscott 07-22-2011 03:43 PM

I might have to give those a try on my ER-6N. There is hardly any girth on those handles. They have a small diameter and you know it hurts clutching a pencil than a baseball bat.

try these... http://www.aerostich.com/a-to-b-util...rap-grips.html

add girth, as well as heat

Mikey 07-22-2011 04:30 PM

The only bike I've ever changed grips on was my '88 GSXR 1100, but it was a 20 year-old bike that had lived outside on a small island for most of its life, so the stockers were worn out. All my other bikes have been nothing but stock grips.

I did just add a crampbuster yesterday due to all the commuting miles I've been putting in, and love it so far.

derf 07-23-2011 10:07 AM

Ive been using mx grips on my street bikes for a few years, they seem to be more comfortable to me

G-Rex 07-23-2011 01:04 PM

I must be one of the few here who has actually had grips like that before.

Foam is a bad idea mmkay. Once they get wet, well, they will hold that water, and they will go bad even faster than the stockers.

Been there done that won't do it again.

Sun can't see the grips when your hands are on them. Hands are supposed to be on the grips when you're riding.
Clearly this means you don't ride enough. Get out there pussy.

Not every one has covered parking while at work or at home while the bike is sitting.

I love riding in the rain. The suck is people drive worse in the rain than when the road is dry.

yeah and mist fucking SUCKS... I'll ride in the rain all day no problems... but I fucking HATE the road grime mist kicked up by cars.... shit doesn't clear off my visor well, and once you wipe, it'll never clear again properly until cleaned.

think my next glove I'll be sure have the little rubber blade on the thumb

It's rained once in the past month.

finally got around to taking a picture of the grips I just took off, see how its worn right through, that is the left grip, and the part thats worn through is facing me right under my pinky finger. I was thinking if I am holding teh grip too tight it would be more worn under my point and middle fingers. I'm thinking that I might be placing weight forward on the grip rubbing the rubber off

Just switch the sides the grips are on. lol

Mr Lefty 07-26-2011 03:54 AM

how'd I know we'd get shitter pics from Derf...

I've never worn out a set of grips... the DRZ still has the stock ones (though I put the heated wraps on it at about 6000 miles) the RR's were wearing out at about 5k but I sold it prior to needing to.

Rangerscott 08-05-2011 12:02 AM

Shitter pic reviews FTW! I enjoyed my first time.

Papa_Complex 08-16-2011 08:19 AM

Sounds like I've been changing handlebars more often than some people change their grips lately

I usually get more than 30K out of a set of soft grips, but I barely hold onto the grips anyway. Easier on arm pump, that way.

*EDIT* that's 30K Canadian, so about 19K after the exchange rate.
