I went on a little ride...

... to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

700,000 Harley Davidsons - 38 BMWs

If you EVER want to feel like you fell off the moon, ride a BMW in full gear to Sturgis. I mean, more than ever I got the standard "aren't you hot in all that?" blah blah blah. And, even though it was the largest version of amateur week I've ever encountered, it was tremendous. I mean, absolutely amazing.

3,628.8 miles on the bike.

I rolled in last night 749 miles from Ojo Caliente, NM to sleep in my own bed. It was worth it. I left Thursday August 4th and got home August 13[ish]. I say ish, because it was 12:45am

Uploading pictures and video now.

Wow. Looking forward to the pics. Which BMW did you ride?

jtemple 08-14-2011 03:56 PM

Chewy and I went in 2008 on my ZX-10R. It was awesome.

OneSickPsycho 08-14-2011 05:43 PM

Supposed to be great riding around there... despite all the cruisers.

There are some incredible roads. I went with a Jackpine Gypsy. I took back roads that no one seemed to know about. And, I sat in traffic twice. Again, amazing trip.

Pictures loading...

So, you actually rode there and back, rather than putting the bike on a trailer to get it up there like many of those 700k Harleys?

derf 08-14-2011 06:52 PM

I went to daytona in 2007 on a jap cruiser. I thought I felt out of place then, I can't imagine doing it on a BMW

anthonyk 08-14-2011 08:10 PM

Yep, I went a couple of years ago on the Aprilia. I didn't get as many looks as I expected.

I also got the bug in NM to get all the way home the last day. It was a 750-mile day for me, too, so I'm guessing we stayed in pretty close to the same spot (can't remember where I stayed, exactly.

Makes me think of that video someone posted about the HD rider meets sportbike rider.

Sounds like a great trip Moira. Can't wait to see pictures.

I've been to Daytona. Daytona THINKS it's a big rally. It was really funny to watch the guys unload their trailers 30 miles out of town just to ride in and look hard core.

Exhibit A - I give you Brian Klock from KlockWerks and Andie Gaskins from JAG drag racing. There was an S&S party at the Broken Spoke. They turn the dance floor into a burn-out pit. It was the two of them and two others, all burning out. S&S has a new president, he was there for his third day on the job. When we rolled Andie's drag bike in, her husband told me it would burn gas fast and probably either run out of fuel or blow the tire. At the end you can see him tap then hit her on the back to shut it down. It was good humor.

The camera guy down front is the one and only Michael Lichter.

I'm working my way backwards - that was from Wednesday night. I'm not used to taking pictures and documenting stuff. This sorting stuff sucks.

Met some bikers from Las Vegas at a gas station the other day that came from Sturgis. Said they had a great time. My wife and I went up there in the late 70's. It was September, but there were still a couple bikers left over from the rally that stayed in our campground. That downhill, one-way, twisty road in Custer State Park is still the most memorable road I was ever on.

OK, so keeping a blog is an incredible pain in the ass. I'm updating things with pictures. Most of this fits in the category of "can't make this shit up" My personal favorite is the midget bowling...

Don't forget to grease your midget

If there were a bike in the shot I would have submitted as POTM.
