MP3 help
I received a $30 gift card for Christmas, its for the mall. I walked around that mother fucker today for 1.5 hours and do you think I could find something to buy? :panic: I was going to buy something at GNC but what I was going to buy was $20 more then another place in town. Screw that.
I have been thinking about headphones or an MP3 player. I have one of these right now. http://uk.gizmodo.com/IMG_3707-thumb.JPG It was cheap and I just wanted something for the gym. Well I hate that fact that it doesn't have a screen so I don't know how much life is left in the battery (died on me one night plowing, I was pissed) and I can't set up a play list or even find a song. It has 1g and thats not bad. I think I have aobut 700mb or so on it and one night plowing all night I heard songs again by morning. So I would rather have about 2g+. I have two options. Deal with it the way it is and get nicer headphones. I'm just not sure if this one is good enough to make it worth the better headphones. The headphones I'm not sure if I want to go in the ear buds or over the ear headphones. I would also use the headphones at times with my guitar. So what would you buy? Headphones or a new mp3 player? I can get this 2g Sony NWZ-B105F in white (open box) for $40. Regular price is $80. http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/...-32593878.html I can get the Sony NWZ-B135F Walkman for $60. http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/...ml?tag=box4505 Lyra 1g for $20 http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=1410265 Lyra 2g for $50 http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=1410257 ZEN MOSAIC 2GB for $75 http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=1418263 RCA LYRA MC4202 2GB for $80 if they have it in stock. http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=1410262 CREATIVE ZEN 2GB MP3 PLAYER–BLACK $95 http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=1418259 I'll put the rest in the next post. James |
New mp3 player. You can find cheap ones all over the place. I have two iPods now and my phone plays mp3's. But I don't wear headphones while "plowing," Ulu gets mad.
|
MICROSOFT ZUNE 4GB DIGITAL MEDIA PLAYER, BLACK $99 http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=1410480
And the one that has been catching my eye for a few weeks now is the SONY'S NWZE436FB WALKMAN VIDEO MP3 PLAYER for $99 http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=1412046 I didn't want to spend much more then the $30 but I don't want another one I'm not happy with so IF I go higher I think my max will be $99. So should I just go with headphones for my current mp3 player or get a new mp3 player. I also have a Sony Minidisc but I can't find the bastard. If I knew where that was I might just go for the headphones. But I'm not sure where it is so what would you do? James |

The wife just came home with a Creative Zen Mozaic LX 4gb. We traded gift card and she found me a better deal then the stores I had to deal with at the other mall. :dthumb: I'm gearing it up now so I'll see what I think of it.
James |
Awwww damn..... Zune FTW man..... you'll be sorry!

Well I'm kinda happy with the sound I'm getting out of the Mozaic. At this point I'm not willing to go back to the old player. I love having the screen so I can search for songs. Set up a play list if I want. And so on. At times the sound is pretty good but other times the bass is distorted. I wasn't sure if this was a problem with the headphones or the player. So what I did was hooked it up to my computer speakers. On that it sounded like shit for most of the songs. Why would this be? My buddy had an Ipod with him on New Years and was playing it on his Dewalt construction stereo and it sounded pretty good for the most part. The speakers I hooked them up to were Logitech. I think they are the X540.

Speaker sucking was BOTH the Zune and the POS Logitech I-pods are better, and sound really good over the Fm transmitters Though i would NEVER own either of them:whistle: |
Quote:
Ipods are not known for sound quality from what I have been hearing. And I haven't heard one thing that sounds good over FM transmitters. FM radio doesn't even sound good. And I us an fm transmitter with my XM Radio and I'm not happy with the sound. James |
Quote:
And i just dont like Logitech. . everything i have owned stopped working right after the warranty was up The i-pods are nice and i heard one with the little add-on doo-dad playing on a Dewalt radio at a house i was helping finish up drywall The music was gay as fuck, but it sounded pretty damn good:idk: |
I have the Samsung T10, that I think is discontinued.
My husband as the SanDisk Clip and loves it. It is small like the one in your picture, but has a screen so you can see things as well as a radio. You can also download books and listen to them, bookmarking your place if you need. It's pretty slick and I think they are around $50-$60. |

You gotta think too Digi, he wants something that plays music.... not add useless "applications" and use the internet. Apples are only crappy "scene" devices, that only sell because of the name and not audio quality.... I cant even count the number of friend that have had multiple generations of apples crap on them... and then love the zune. James do yourself a favor and get the Zune or this.... http://www.sansa.com/players/sansa_fuze |

I think I will be taking back this one even if its just to replace it with another Zen. This has an external speaker and it doesn't work on mine. I can't even find setting for it like it says in the manual. I'm going to research it some more and decide what I want to do. Thanks for all the help so far and keep it coming. James |
James.... If you are just serious about music alone, and not video at all, this was mi momma's christmas gift. It does a good job at what she needs, which is the basics. Music quality is good, screen is small and cool lookin. And its way less expensive than the zune. And if your a gym rat.... it is tiny and light as hell, and clips on ur shirt....

So far I'm liking this Zen. Its not perfect. The offset buttons can be a issue in the dark. The other night I went and bought a broke back cable (double male audio cable) and tried it in my excavator through the aux in port. I was surprised. It sounded good unlike with my speakers in my garage. :idk: I will have to try that again. Tried some Jodeci and that sounded good. Played some SRV Pride and Joy. That was great. Played some Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child and the intro of that song sounded amazing for the two little speakers in my excavator. Purple Haze sounded good as well.
I didn't really care about the video but I do like the option now. And I like having pictures on my mp3 player. I have some of the kids and my wife. And some car/bikes and so on. After using it for a bit I kinda want a much larger capacty so I can hold even more songs (even though this 4gb isn't even half full yet)/ And I wouldn't mind a larger screen. I would love to have a 32gb Zen X-Fi. James |
Does anyone know how to stop windows media player from added pictures to my mp3 player when I update it?
James |
Looks like it only put on a few pics so I'm fine for now. No surprise nude pics of myself on my mp3. I found 50+ old cds and I justed ripped them and loaded them to my mp3 player. I now have 889 songs 225 photos (It doesn't seem like I have that many on there. I'll have to look into that) 4 videos (I should toss them they are the ones that came with it and they are costing me some songs) which leaves me 12 mb free out of my 4gb player. I just got the thing and I want a larger one. I want the 16 or 32gb player so I can have everything on it. I still have a lot of songs that I know I want on there that I don't have yet.
James |
Wait til you have a 60gb mp3 player and you try to sort out the bad music to add more.
I have a few songs that show up as pure static, so when Iput my ipod on shuffle and ride my bike they randomly show up, but I don't know which ones they are and I dont have 2 weeks (straight) to listen to all my music to find them. |

Loading up 60 gb would be a bitch. Took me a few hours I think to rip 50+ cds then I loaded up the mp3 player. James |
Well my Zen Mozaic let me down last week. It worked perfect up till then. Great battery life, decent sound and so on. Last week I was sick and we had a snow storm, so I had to go plow. I warm my machine up and move some carts off the side walk so I can plow it. I get in my machine, put in my head phones, hit the power switch, and nothing happens. The fucker wouldn't turn on so I had to work that storm sick and with no music. I was pissed.
I thought it might just be the battery so I put it on the charger when I got home and nothing. The unit is dead. So I'm going to see if I can take it back an try something else. I'm not to happy about the fact that Creative keeps trying to get you to register by putting up a pop up. I would cancel it but after a while it wouldn't even do that. It would close and pop up again. I'm not impressed with that. James |
I recommend the Sansa, lots of people like it. Very sim ple interface, solid quality, and if you hold out one with bluetooth is either on it's way or here already, I haven't kept track.
|
My wife was going out shopping so she returned it for me and picked up the Zen 8gb. Its the one with the larger screen and expandable memory.
I like the idea of the larger screen. I have heard many good things about the Sansa but I do want the bigger screen. Plus now I'm stuck with Walmart because I don't have my receipt (I'm sure I could find it if I looked harder) so I was given a gift card. So that kind of screws things up. I will give this one a shot and see how it is. James |
If that doesn't work out for you I've been loving my Sony mp3 player. It's fairly old now and it still sounds great. I even dropped it once and besides the selector button being slightly gritty it still functions 100%. It also came with Sonicstage which is awesome, but they canceled that now so I don't know what they offer with them anymore.

I don't know why people hate on iPods so much.. the last one I had was an old 1 gig iPod nano.. bought it in '06 at the PX in Vilseck, Germany, and it lasted through the abuse of 4 or 5 moves, many trans-atlantic flights, a 5500 mile cross-country motorcycle trip, and the only reason I don't use it anymore is because Tracy gave me the 8 gig iPod nano that he won at a raffle in October. That one I've only had for about 6 months, but it's survived extensive usage in my car (hooray auxiliary input), rides on the bike, and I can watch movies on it if I want (though I'd rather watch them on my iPhone.. bigger screen  ).
But whatever wets your whistle. :D |

whatever MP3 player you get...make sure you ditch the earphones that come with it asap.
In-ear is the way to go. FYI: My creative ZEN lasted 2 years in all sorts of weather and all sorts of abuse. the Sansa 8gb I replaced it with had the screen get a little flackey within 2 months and menu system SUCKs. Still works though |
I have a pair of Phillips in-ear's just like these that I bought about 4 weeks ago on impulse and have found that they work very well on planes.

Another reason is the price. Any Ipod I would go for will cost 3 times as much as the Zen Moziac I went with, and 8 times more then my first mp3 player. I did end up spending about two times more for this Zen over the Zen Moziac. I didn't want to spend this much but for that I did get a player with expandable memory, a 2.5" screen up from 1.8", fm radio (I don't even like the radio but I'm happy its on this player. Go figure). If I had the money to waste I would get the 160g 7" screened Archos. James |

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1199496037667 The ones I currently use are Sony (not sure of the model number) in ear types that came with an "over the ear thing-a-mo-bob" that clips onto the wires to help secure them. I usually spend 30-40 on head phones and the Sony's (it has bass boost on the package...) I use now, though on the pricier side have always sounded much better than the 10-20 dollar buds all over the place and I prefer them to the equally priced Phillips buds. |
Quote:
I have those...at least phillips that look exactly like those |
I need to decide what I'm willing to spend. Last year I went to the Sony story and tried all of the over the ear head phones to see if there was a difference between the $40 ones and the $400 set. There was a huge difference. But I tried about 5 sets and I didn't find too many major differences between the $160 set and the $400. At least not enough to say for sure that it was worth the extra money.
I also tried 5-7 sets at a music store. I found the same thing there but I did find a set that was pretty good in the $100-140 range. I also need to decide if I want in the ear or over the ear. James |

These ear phones are lacking.
Right njow I'm I'm pressing a button that will switch to the album of the day. I'm playing parts of the sounds to see what sounds good and what doesn't. I'll post some so you guys can see what I'm playing. I don't just listen to one type of music. The more I listen to this the more I want some better head phones. I was just playing Bob Marley Buffalo Soldier and it sounded pretty good but could be better. Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze didn't sound as good as it did in my excavator. This came pre loaded with some sounds and Beethoven was one of them. I played that and it sounded ok till I thought about how much better it would sound with quality speakers and that made it sound like shit. Outcast didn't sound good at all. They can't handle the bass. I messed with the preset eq settings and it didn't get much better. Pharrell How Does it feel? Doesn't sound all that good at all. The Roots feat. Erikah Badu Baby You Got Me Sound ok if you ignore the distorted bass. I turned off the bass boost and its less distorted but the bass is lacking. Wycleff Jean Staying Alive sounds pretty good. Of course it could be much better but my head is still bouncing to the beat. :rockout: Perfect Gentleman sounds pretty good. Jaheim Let It Go doesn't sound bad at all. Jermaine Dupri Sweetheart is distroying the head phones with the bass. Right now I'm missing my 12" Orions and my HCCA 425 amp. Here is another pre loaded song. Cost of Comfort Don't Get Lost In A Movement. This doesn't sound good at all. I never heard of this band or this song before but I would love to hear it with a good set of head phones. I might leave this song on here. UB40 Red Red Wine sounds pretty good. Aaron Hall Curiosity (Dangerous Minds soundtrack) Sounds pretty good. The Gap Band Early in the Morning. Sounds ok. John Lee Hooker Boom Boom sound pretty good. MC Brains Brainstorming Sounds pretty good. Jodeci sounds pretty good but I know it could be much better. I have Jodeci recorded at 192kbps 44khz. I think what need to do is to take this player out with me and try head phones with it. I did try that with the ZEN Mozaic and I wasn't impressed with what I did try that day. James |

OMG the saga continues!!!!!!
As far as player.... i wont say anything more than i've already said...... Zune ftw! As far as headphones go, stick with Sony. I've had one over the ear pair, two wraparound types, and one in-ear types..... great sound quality. The link to the Sony in-ears he put up are suprisingly good. Got it for last christmas. The bass on rap songs is unreal for such small earbuds!!!!! |
Etymotic ER6i.. $80, but so worth it. I'd give you a link but I'm posting from my phone.. You can find them on Amazon, though.
|
I bought some Koss plugs, you can find them around $12 at Wal Mart, and they sound great, even under the helmet.
|
Koss is a good brand. I've had a pair from them and I like the way they sounded and were comfortable.
|
Koss would be easy on the wallet but I have never really happy with anything I tried from Koss. I haven't tried anything from them in a while.

Just a few hours ago I bought Skull Candy Full Metal Jacket with 11 mm drivers. I like them much better then my oem set. Bass is much better. I had to turn off the bass boost but they sound good. I need to play with them a bit to see if they sound $62 good. I didn't want to spend that much. I was thinking $30-40 range but there were less headphones to chose from then there was 2 or 3 months ago. I didn't see anything I wanted in the stores I went to that was in that range. I didn't want to pay $120 for the Shure's. They told me the Bose were done to $94 from $120 but I wasn't sure if I even wanted to go that high.
They come with 4 different covers to make them fit right. I tried two, but need to try the other 2. They don't seem to fit just right yet. They also have a stiff cable which I don't really like. That along with the buds that don't fit perfect in my left ear yet (the right seems to fit a bit better) lets it pull it out of my ear at times. One thing I do like is the cable isn't long but it comes with an extension. Right now I use it without so its nice not having too much cable floating around. I'm still testing the sound but I have been sick for over a week and my left ear is bothering me so its hard to tell with that ear at times. I have 30 days to return time so I will test them out and if they don't seem like they are worth $62 they will go back. I almost think that I might need to go over the ear to get the exact sound I want. BTW unless I can get these to fit better I would never buy them if I was using them on a bike. Right now I know a helmet will rip these out of my ears without a problem. I still have my helmet so I can test that after I get them to fit right if anyone wants me to try. James Quote:
