Audiobooks

hey all... look'n for some recommendations on audio books for my drive down to Mississippi.

on my drive from Fargo to AK I went through 5 books...
Da Vinci Code... 9/10
Dream Catcher... 9/10
USS Indianapolis... 7/10
I Am Legend... 7/10 SOOO Much better than the movie
Steven Colbert's I am America: And So Can You! Funny but didn't finish it... my trip ended

I'm looking for some new ones... I've already downloaded these
Band of Brothers
Beyond Band of Brothers
John Stewart's A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction

just wondering if ya'll have any recommendations...

Mr Lefty 01-31-2009 08:03 PM

oh forgot one... so it was 6 actually
Into the Wild... 8/10 very interesting story... way different than the movie

Quick281 01-31-2009 08:07 PM

Is an audio book literally just the book but read out loud so you can drive?

Mr Lefty 01-31-2009 08:15 PM

yeah. they have abridged and unabridged versions... abridged just means shortened... so I stay clear of those.

the people that read them have a true tallent for reading and will do each voice different and to give the words the right amount of inflection to allow you to sink into the story.

I love audio books... they're awesome for road trips... but also when your just fumbling throught the world wide web bored off your ass...

I've listened to all of the harry potter books... and all three Lord of the Rings as well as the Hobbit... doing that... great stories btw...

Quick281 01-31-2009 08:23 PM

Wow I hadn't really thought of them in the manner you described. Might have to look into a couple that I would want to hear about.

I am a strange lover of WWII history so maybe I could even educate myself a bit. Hmmmm.

do you download torrents? if so download USS Indianapolis... good book

I can't seem to find Band of Brothers un abridged to download... I may just buy it when I get back to the states.

anything by Stephen E Ambrose you'd enjoy if you love WWII stuff...

nice thing about downloading the audiobooks is anywhere you can take your iPod you can listen... and if you do the torrent thing... your not out any money if you don't like them.

Quick281 01-31-2009 08:56 PM

Yeah, I will look into torrents tonight.

Antwanny 01-31-2009 09:11 PM

I listen to fiction and nonfiction audiobooks when I walk my dog. The two latest ones I enjoyed were "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein (it's narrated by a dog), and "It's Called Work For a Reason" by Larry Winget.

Archren 01-31-2009 11:22 PM

I actually read these.. don't know how good the audiobook versions are:
Dresden Files
Ender's Game
Any books by Laurell K. Hamilton

There's more, but I'm having a brain fart right now

how the fuck does that work

Ninjakel 02-01-2009 12:35 AM

anything by Laurell K Hamilton is awesome.

also Patricia Briggs.

I am a big book nut...

Corey 02-01-2009 12:44 AM

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brian. Excellent book. If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home is another of his that's a good one. Dunno how they play out on audio books, but they're some gripping stories.

What the hell? That's the phrase in an Army running cadence (or one version of such.. other versions are "bury me in the leaning rest", etc.).

Artie Lange - Too fat to fish.

EpyonXero 02-01-2009 05:32 PM

The Aubrey/Maturin Series by Patrick O'Brien - Great adventure series. Hstorical fiction
The Post American World by Fareed Zakaria - Just finished this, book on globalization if you want to learn something. Non-fiction
The Areas of My Expertise by John Hodgeman - Very funny, if you like the Jon Stewart book youll probably like this.

lauralynne 02-01-2009 05:50 PM

Dan Brown's Angels & Demons (I think that's what it's called)
Marley & Me - great book, haven't seen the movie
are you a Harry Potter fan at all - all those books should take you a long ways
Stephen King books are always great

yeah looking for Angels & Demons and Deception Point

I've already read/listened to all the Harry Potters... very good books.

and I loved Stephen Kings' Dream Catchers... I'll be looking through a lot of his stuff

OneSickPsycho 02-01-2009 08:26 PM

The only audio book I've ever listened to was Good to Great by Jim Collins... It's about how to take a company from good to great and deals a lot with leadership... My boss gave it to me... Honestly, if you're in or interested in any sort of management or position of leadership... I highly recommend it.

Mr Lefty 02-01-2009 08:34 PM

I'll put it on my download list.

Jim Butcher's stuff is just coming out on audio now. All the Codex Alera books are out, and they're working on the Dresden Files.

Other good books:

- Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan. Some really cool scifi/cyberpunk stuff
- Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaimin is a master of dark modern fairy tales. The audio book is particularly good because the narrator is amazing.

If you're looking for a legit source of downloadable audio books, try http://www.audible.com. I pay a flat fee and get two per month. I listen to them on my iPod all the time.

Mr Lefty 02-01-2009 10:18 PM

I'll check those out...

I saw your post in another thread about audible.com... the only problem is I don't listen to them often enough (pretty much only on road trips) to have that be a good deal for me.

and for 149 for all 12 books at once... I could easily find more than 12 audiobooks on cd at barns and nobles... maybe not new best sellers... but some good ones none the less...

Smittie61984 02-01-2009 11:07 PM

I have "Will you 10 black guys with your big dicks please bang my fat white hairy wife volume 36" on audio. Great for rides with the family.

Into the Wild would be cool. As long as you don't try and go on his Alaskan adventure. Well more than you are on already.

Just a thought. But The Who's album "Tommy" was sort of a Rock Opera that tells a story. Kick ass music and a story in the album. FUCKING RAGE LEVEL AT 100%!!!

Mr Lefty 02-01-2009 11:57 PM

 I've already read/listedn to into the wild... watched the movie again yesterday... they're really hard to compare... in the movie you see it from Chris's POV...

the book is from a reporter who is try'n to track down chris's path... both are good... but honestly... they're like two different stories completely.

Corey 02-02-2009 12:06 AM

Stephen King's Dark Tower books. The first three are masterpieces, while four takes a slight detour but is still excellent. They start falling apart a bit afterwards (this was about the time where he got hit by a van) but the overall story is amazing. But if nothing else, The Gunslinger is fucking pure gold.

Well that leaves your only option at "Please bang my fat wife with your big black cock volume 36". Buy it now thank me later.

He's got a few books out there that are a collection of short stories, and they tend to be among his best. Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Hearts in Atlantis, Skeleton Crew, Night Shift, and Everything's Eventual are all great collections of stories, with Nightmares and Dreamscapes and Night shift being my favorites, though Everything's Eventual has Little Sister's of Eluria, which is a nice side tale of Roland Deschain.

pickle.of.doom 02-02-2009 01:23 AM

Yeah, good for the shorther trips too. Some of them are only 30 mins to an hour long.

Have you listened to Eragon yet?

I was going to suggest Angels&Demons as well, but LauraLynne beat me to it, and you've already been acquainted!

I've heard great things about Pillars of the Earth - it's a long one though... 38-40 hrs or so.

Never read the book but the movie was horrible, completely generic.

Amorok 02-04-2009 06:46 AM

On my way down to Keesler from Grand Forks I went through the first book of the Dark Tower series, then killed the second and third one on subsequent trips.
