Blue Ridge Parkway

just got in from a little night riding on the Parkway, awesome road at night, and its only 10 mins from here, did not meet one single car! though there were several deer in a few spots

fasternyou929 04-28-2009 12:58 AM

I was just on that road Sunday. It really varies from one area to another, but the good spots are hard to beat!

I did a 5 day motorcycle trip last spring and caught BRP and Cherohala (sp?) Skyway right at dusk on back-to-back days. I don't know if another street ride will ever top that.

Riceaholic 04-28-2009 03:22 AM

Cherahola is my favorite I have ever ridden...

was92v 04-28-2009 07:19 AM

All of those roads are "THE RIDE" that keeps me wanting more.

Ducati Diva 04-28-2009 07:24 AM

Just an FYI the closed "Craggy Garden" section is due to open one lane on May15. Hope to have it completly opened some time in June. Anybody that wants maps or info just let me know.

It's a great road but driving it everyday as a job I tend to avoid it on my days off.

Mr Lefty 04-28-2009 07:31 AM

if Trip keeps being a douche and has to work first part of next week... I'm gonna ride the BRP from start to finish...

CasterTroy 04-28-2009 07:44 AM

Rode from tuggles gap to 421 saturday :rockwoot: Love the parkway when the leaf-lookers aren't out

Yeah, I don't have enough vacation time to take off the full week and take all the vacation days I want this year.

I have a wife, she likes to go places too.

z06boy 04-28-2009 09:26 AM

There was a group ride this past Sunday up thru Shady Valley that I wasn't able to join in on. :panic: I just got back from a week in Puerto Rico and had too much going on to do an allday ride. Maybe next time. :rockout: I did get to ride for a couple of hours at least. :rockwoot:

Same here, by far. That day we hit it at dusk, we made it through all 40+ miles with only seeing one car. So perfect it felt surreal!

Has it calmed down on sundays up there yet?

I've tried to avoid sundays at shady for about 2 years now because of the TVA crack-downs

Trip 04-28-2009 09:37 AM

I hate the cherrycola. It's only fun at triple digits and at triple digits those rusty guardrails are KNIVES!!!!!!1111oneoneone

Not to mention if I get a ticket for that on the cherrycola, I probably will lose my job. Federal ticket = no fun.

I haven't been yet but from what the guys said...it wasn't too bad. I guess budget cuts keep less popo roaming. :idk:

Well I have been there in the cage but not on the bike yet.

The eastern section of TVA police hq is not too far from my office. I will let them know to keep the pressure on to keep you away. :nee:

We have deer that walk up to you and look at you like your stupid. That will sit there and continue to look at you like you are stupid after you peg it in the ass with a rubber band? This is the type deer we have at the nuke plant. This mofos aren't scared of humans in the slightest. It's a protected reserve here because of the nuke plant, no hunting allowed. If you break out the thermal equipment we use for checking the electrical equipment you see hundreds of those suckers out in the fields at night. They love to run in front of cars and bikes. MOFOs... They know they are safe here. Bastards...

They're likely wondering why the hell you don't park in your garage  :nee:

These aren't near my house. The deer near my house know better than to pop their little heads out of their hidey holes or they become jerky.

Rsv1000R 04-28-2009 03:43 PM

I live next to a national park with lots of deer, and after getting taken out by one I put a hornet deer whistle on the bike. IMO it makes a pretty big difference, deer in general don't like me coming towards them, and either stay out of the road/way, or run the other way.

I'll ask tomorrow...but I THINK it's just the Auto-Zone special :idk:

was92v 04-28-2009 10:13 PM

I like the Chericola but Trip is right. It starts getting nice about 90> and that is tooo fast for guard rails and 3in of run off before the 1000 ft fall.

I'd be interested to hear... there are hundreds of the damn things sleeping in the fields near my house.

It was what I thought...Auto-Zone special :idk: He said the key was mounting them perpendicular to the face of the vehicle so the air hits them dead-on.....he said on his (’04) camry they don't work well because of the curved bumper not letting him get the angle just right...said they run out in front of him all the time in that car, but the ('96 ford) truck and the ('91)corolla have flat front bumpers and he's able to get them square to the face of the wind. That when he drives those they run away from the road.

Side note: None of his cars have exhaust issues or aftermarket mufflers, so he ASSUMES it’s due to mounting the whistles properly on those cars

Rsv1000R 04-29-2009 09:21 AM

Google the hornet, it's 12v's and whistles all the time.

The insurance companies have tested the air powered ones, and say they're ineffective.

As for the Hornet I try to watch out for deer, and when they're close to the road, I see them look at me, a large number will actively leave, I've seen them change directions as I got closer. I think it gives them good auditory input so they know where you are, and if you're heading towards them, or they're heading towards you.

On the other hand IMO they won't save you at 100Mph (maybe if you install 2 to give it more range), as you get there to fast. But I have them on both bikes, and I still use them after 7+ years.

They were from NCSportbikes.com from the Charlotte region...not that they were flying flags in reference to this though.

One guy in the group went down but not too serious.
