HID Conversion

OK so my next thing may be a HID conversion. I was reading a lot about HID lights, the temperature and angle and I remember Trip had a post on his HID’s so I read that again too. I read that the light emitted from the HID needs to be controlled, that’s why most cars running oem HID’s are used with the projector type lens. I talked to my part supplier and he said that the HID he can get will probably replace my high beams; but would rather have the lights go through the projector lens. Im still in the research stage and wanted to get more info so any information you have will be greatly appreciated.:twfix:

Thanks.

I have straight up cheap China HIDS, I use them all the time, no issue at all.

Mr Lefty 04-03-2008 06:34 PM

Trip... that link you posted to the write up for 600rr had a link for the little 3rd light the guys there replaced with an LED... AT that link I found a little "delay" for the HID lights... so basicly it'd delay your HID's a couple seconds when you start the bike so your electrical system isn't being overloaded... any chance you have that link?

also... do you have any issues when starting your bike? or do your lights delay some themselves... (i've heard of this)

Trip 04-03-2008 08:01 PM

course, that's www.tripageled.com

T is a good guy, tell him I said hello.

I have never had a problem starting my bike with HIDs, of course only one of my lights is on when I fire up the bike.

No issues for me either.....the best mod I ever did to the bike too ! Wish I had some pics of them but I'm at work...maybe later.

Mr Lefty 04-03-2008 08:33 PM

thanks trip! yeah both of mine will kick on... so i'm gonna get the relay... just better safe than sorry

Amber Lamps 04-04-2008 12:18 AM

question, are you guys talking just bulbs (HID look a like)or the complete HID kit complete with ballasts, relays and upgraded wiring harnesses?

Just a note,I found an actual complete German conversion kit for $40 on EBay. It comes with a 1 year warranty from a seller with over 16,500 sells and 100% feedback. I'll probably get it for my bike,so I'll let you know.

Mr Lefty 04-04-2008 01:40 AM

actual HID kits... not the look alike... the kit I'm looking at is both Hi/Lo for $265 or so...

it's two ballists, two bulbs, two relays and I don't loose my high beams...

I'll be installing it in September... can't fuck'n wait!

Yep...full plug & play kits ..."Bosche" ....spelling? :idk: My kit came with plug in wiring harness...no splicing required & ballasts/ignitors combined . All of it fit nicely on top of my RAM air induction, just below the inner fairings. Best $200 I ever spent, the projector high beam throws bright "white" light ( no more yellow ) for what looks like a mile down the road. :rockout:

Mr Lefty 04-06-2008 06:04 PM

I ordered my HID kit last week... I can't wait to install them in my bike...

Any hints on where you found this kit? I am thinking of something similar for my bike, but I wanted both bulbs changed.

Mr Lefty 04-07-2008 02:56 AM

I'll link ya when I get home... but it's like Xenonexperts.com or something... Trip is running the kit in his 600RR and love them... if you do the motorcycle kit they have a discount on the 2nd ballast and bulb.

for me I did the car setup (same size ballast as the motorcycle kit) because I have two bulbs that both do hi/lo... and wanted to keep it that way

EDIT: like I promised.

Thanks Ebbs!

Mr Lefty 04-07-2008 04:51 AM

no prob... you may wanna check out Trip's link above to get that relay... should help ease the stress on your electrical system... then again... Trip runs it with out issue... so who knows... I ordered it anyways as I have two lights coming on when i kick on the ignition

Gas Man 04-07-2008 07:02 AM

They do make a digital HID. I know many of my Big Dog guys are starting to run them. They create less heat so you can store the ballast in more tight places and they draw less amps.

yep,the kit I just ordered comes with a digital ballast and plugs into the existing wiring harness. $60 shipped.I decided to only get low beam as that's what I ride in 90% of the time anyway. BTW,according to all the research I've done,HID lights require LESS electricity than halogen,so I'm not sure what all the concern is with start-up.....

Do some looking around on the R1 forums. I've been looking into HID's also. There seem to be two reputable companies that the majority of R1 owners are using. One is A&R and the other is a certain ebay seller. I'm kinda leaning towards the A&R kit. It's alittle more pricey, but it's plug and play for the R1.

Tigger... they require less constant current than halogen but when they first ignite they require a large amount of power to start up. (or so I understand from everything I've read)

with two balasts coming on when my bike is also trying to start just doesn't sound like a smart plan... so delaying them 10 seconds is worth it... to me at least

that's cool...according to the seller(take it like you want) the ballasts/ starters already delay...kinda like flourecent lights. Anyway,my bike only needs one so there!

Mr Lefty 04-07-2008 04:54 PM

yeah no big deal... though I wonder if the power draw is delayed or just the lights coming on is :idk:

bombadillo 04-07-2008 05:31 PM

Anybody heard of these guys??? http://xenonrider.com/

For the price and all they look great, and the few guys I got the site from said they all worked great. All that I know of went into a gs500f so its hard to say for what bikes they will or won't work for.

Mr Lefty 04-07-2008 05:36 PM

yeah I looked at those... the only problem I had with them... is they lie about the color charts... they say the 4300 is standard and 6000k is plasma white

in fact... 4500k is the pureist white available.

m0n1 04-09-2008 03:06 PM

More information on HID’s

The temperature rating (kelvins) on the HID does not indicate how much light is available (lumens) but indicates what color your light will be. (approximate numbers)
Temperature color light output
• 3000 kelvins yellow light 1500-2000
• 5000 k White light 3200 lumens ~ daylight
• 6000k bluish white 2800 lumens
• 8000k bluish purple 2500 lumens
• 100000k purple 2100 lumens

4100K lamps are approx 20% brighter (measured in Lumens not degrees K) than the 6000K
As you see the higher the kelvins, the less amount of usable light.

I’m picking up a 6000k set for my wife’s car before I get a set for the bike.

Mr Lefty 04-09-2008 04:11 PM

yup... I've got a set of 4500 on their way right now!

Quick281 04-09-2008 06:06 PM

I am gonna have to wait on ordering a set of these. I just blew a shit ton of money on gear today.

Mr Lefty 04-09-2008 06:29 PM

fuck... I just got the shipping invoice... they're going to an old address! called fed ex and had them returned to sender... e-mailed the guy at Xenonexpert.com and gave him the correct address...

glad I'm doing all this shit now... so there's time to correct fuckups

If you dont mind, how much did they cost. i want the 4500 ones too. and i got quoted 160

Mr Lefty 04-10-2008 04:38 PM

well I needed the dual kit (Hi/Lo) so it was 329 shipped to me with a lifetime warrenty.

m0n1 04-10-2008 09:09 PM

holly crap...1 year warranty dual low bulb. thanks

Mr Lefty 04-10-2008 10:59 PM

yeah it's a lot cheaper if you only need dual lows... I think it's like 160 or so...

from my understanding, it takes as few secs for HIDs to 'ignite' so in a case where one needs to quickly flash their lights, don't know how that will work. i may be wrong about the timing, but HID hi's will definitely get someone's attention.

It won't work. When I turn on my high beam, it takes it a few seconds to fully ignite.

Mr Lefty 04-11-2008 02:23 AM

it'll work fine for Cutty... as he said keep halogen HI's and HID lows... this will mean his HID will stay on all the time... and the halogen will only come on with HI's... so the only delay he'll have is when he starts the bike.

that's why i only did lows myself plus i don't use hi beam that often.

Yup.
But I wonder how much you would see the halogen's with the HID's on anyway??

Mr Lefty 04-11-2008 10:39 PM

it should still shine down the road well

I figured that... but i meant as far as flashing someone.
wonder if they would even notice...

Mr Lefty 04-12-2008 08:45 PM

well as long as your HID's ar cut off well they shouldn't be all that bright to drivers... they would just look really white.

Amber Lamps 04-16-2008 08:13 PM

Hey I've meant to mention/ask...my HID kit had like 1' long leads going to it. Where the fuck did you put the ballast?!?! I ended up splicing some hd wire to it and running the four leads to my tail section and attaching it to my subframe under the plastic. There just isn't any room for anything in the front fairing of my bike anyway...

Trip 04-16-2008 08:19 PM

I have mine industrial velcroed to the frame. My leads from the ballast to the bulb are a lot longer than 1".

Mr Lefty 04-16-2008 08:19 PM

Yeah I made sure to look at that or e-mail and ask those who didn't specify... mine I think have like 5' or 6' long leads...

were yours made for a car? that maybe why... :idk:

could be,I don't know. boy I was pissed I can tell you! On the upside, after some finagling,it works great and only cost $40 so I guess it was worth it.

this reminds me... I need to find out where the fuck my HID lights are...

m0n1 04-26-2008 10:41 PM

http://www.goldeneyehid.com/images/hid_kit_l.jpgi installed the kit i got for my wifes car. 6000k bright with a little blue tint. similar kit i will be getting for the bike. plug and play. hardest part was getting to the factory bulbs to replace and finding a place to mount the ballast. i was told that the ballast for the ones to go on the bike will be smaller. will post pics of the bike kit as soon as it comes in.
