Saw it and liked it. Dark and disturbing. Two thumbs up.

LeeNetworX 08-16-2009 04:45 PM

I've been anxious to see this since the first ad I saw for it. Looks great - might have to take an afteroon off and go catch a matinee with some friends from work.

karl_1052 08-16-2009 06:42 PM

Not as good as I thought it would be.
I also did not find it very dark at all.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie, but not great.

werd. I actually had no desire to see it based on the ads. Just thought it looked dumb. But it was grrrreat.. Really dark, lots of gore. Definitely looking forward to a sequel.

Dave 08-17-2009 08:42 AM

i think it would be ruined if they did do a sequel. huge huge props to their weapons guy though, valmets and tavors where regular AKs would have done makes elitist snobs like me happy

*damn kooky south africans, looks like all of those were vektors. makes the weapons guy even more relevant. guess i need to do more research to keep my scout skills on point

Tried to see it tonight. 1 hour and 15 minutes in the power went out on the bloick that the theater is on...I was not pleased...

Cass 08-17-2009 11:07 PM

Saw it last night, totally not what i expected. Even after the "intense and gory" warning, I was not prepared for the movie.

I guess I'm more girly than I thought b/c this was not my flavor of movie. I wasn't pprepared for exploding beings, nor all the dark parts of human nature. I think it was the documentary style of portrayal that really did it for me.

Doesnt hurt that the director was a south african. But yeh bad ass movie, and I truly doubt that there will be a part 2. there was a ton of stuff left open at the end but you can almost guess what will happen.

Oh and did anybody notice the Halo sniper rifle in the first scene inside D9 when they were exiting the truck? One of the guys in the background had a huge green sniper rifle. Some dude in the back of the theater yelled out taht there was the halo sniper gun. I thought it looked like a green mech20 (forget the real name).

And I was thinking the white rifles might be british sa80's with a large plastic cover of some kind on them. Only reason I say that is because off the top of my head the brits and the israelis are the only ones I can think of that have their magazine behind the pistol grip, although I'm sure there are more, just cant think of any right now.

i cant remember the name but its a South african anti-material rifle, 20mm iirc. gotta find my janes.

NTW-20. kept wanting to call it a gepard but thats hungarian

the white bullpups are vektor cr-21s. basically a bullpup version of their R4 galil clone

NTW-20!, I don't know why I was thinking its a mech20. Anyway are you sure its the cr-21? my bad memory doesn't remember the rifle being so curved, although it has the same layout

Dave 08-18-2009 12:47 AM

well i was calling it a tavor in theatre but thats def not right. i think the black rubber parts on it are whats throwing us off. reasonably good pics on the imdb gun page

Dave 08-18-2009 12:50 AM

btw fred, you forgot the austrians, belgians, and the french. we seem to be one of the few countries that cant see the advantages of the bullpup layout

Awesome find never even seen that before but yeh its cool. I wish they had a better shot of the Cr21, I'm sure that you are right but the picture they are showing is a bad quality one.

and yes it is a Mech20 or better known by it's non slang name the Mechem NTW-20

You guys would know this, who made those cheap-shit looking WWII submachine guns with the skinny clip that stuck out perpendicular to the rest of the gun. When I was a kid I used to think they were cool on TV.

sort of, except I remember it being shorter, and the clip being straight not curved.

Dave 08-18-2009 02:01 AM

sten gun?

http://www.combat.ws/S4/MILTERMS/IMAGES/STEN_MK3.JPG

i had a sterling mk4 when i was in iraq the first time. thing was fun as hell to shoot. only big problem with it was it was an open bolt action so when i eventually had to use it my target managed to evade in the short time it took for the bolt to ride into battery

Homeslice 08-18-2009 04:38 AM

sten gun, yeah that's it.......wow, even more of a POS than I thought. Good for storage and concealment though I guess.

most of the early SMGs were stamped steel wonders you could throw together for around $20. very useful when you need to arm a lot of people quickly

TYEster 08-19-2009 10:49 PM

I don't know about all the gun business...

But damn.

That movie is definitely awesome. It seriously makes me reflect and think about we, as humans, treat others. I'm just surprised the reality wasn't "aliens landed, we blow them up". Shit I figured the first human dead would = all out war.

And seeing a solider or alien just get blown up isn't as gory to me, as seeing that dude get sent to a creepy ass medical lab for experiments while suits stand around making the executive decision. That was the worst thing for me to watch. It's just the absolute grossest side to human nature I think is possible.

Well to be honest, I thought was a bit of reflection of the WWII era where we took all the Japanese in the country, and locked em up "camp" style too. And I'm guessing that's how things already are in certain parts of the world.

It's a bit sad and disgusting.

Just got back from seeing it. GREAT flick. I really like the documentary style of filming. I also was amazed how "real" the aliens looked. Computer animation has certainly improved over the last few years.

Anyone else immediately HATE van der moron? The entire movie, I was hoping somebody would knock him off. Especially when his dumb self took off in the control ship. How did he expect to fly the thing or fix himself? "Christopher" and his son were great though. WTF is up with the human names though- you hear enough of their language. And they never say what the "prawn" call themselves, or if they have a proper name and not some derogatory shit. :wtfru:

I think the whole film is intentionally "human centered" just to emphasize how poorly the prawns are treated. We don't really get any insight into their culture due to the fact that the humans in the story don't care.

And yes, Ven der moron is a moron. Again, illustrating the shortcomings of mankind in critical situations.

In my case it's because I'm supposed to be left-handed, but I had a grade 1 teacher who thought that it was her duty to force everyone to write with their right hand... by using a ruler to the wrist. Yeah, I'm old.

It definitely ISN'T a benefit when shooting a 7.62 or 30-06. Kinda hurts, actually.

Oh no... We have something in common. My Mom tied my left arm to my side to prevent me from using it. Apparently in certain parts of Europe it was considered bad luck. Of course my Mom also insisted that I not be circumcised because she didn't want me marked as a Jew. I guess that she had some left-over Nazi paranoia....:idk:

Well here's the really odd bit. The teacher who used to whack my wrist with a ruler was Scottish. My background is Scottish. The majority of the Scots nobility was left handed, as can be seen from the fact that a great number of their castle towers have stairways that circle down clockwise, rather than counter-clockwise as they do elsewhere like England, so that the defenders could hold the railing with their right hands while swinging a sword with the left. Do they make self-hating Scots? I think so.

If you want a kick, look up the origin of the word "sinister."

hrm i had a similar experience  for pistols i shoot left eyed, rifles iron sight and scope i use my right, holo sights and ccos you use both but like i said its an advantage since your primary eye is clear to provide you with fast target aquisition while the weaker one simply supplies the reticle

Yeah, me too. Mine is because I supposedly had a lazy eye when I was very young, so they put a patch over my right (dominate) eye and let my left eye get stronger. So now I'm right handed but left eye dominate.

Kinda funny that I seem to be the only one who is this way because of vision problems and not hands. Although I broke my hand in a fist fight in high school so I can write passably well with either one.

As for the movie, see it in the theater or wait til it comes to redbox and watch it for a buck?

Hush up Goyim... My mom was European and witnessed the horror and aftermath of the holocaust when she was little. At that time only Jews were circumcised because of their faith. Most other people did not do it. Apparently, it was a handy way for the Nazis to tell if einer mensche war Juden oder nicht. And yes, Ven der moron is a moron. Again, illustrating the shortcomings of mankind in critical situations.

Yeah. Thats the same thing missionaries used to do to "savages" they met on their trips. They would ignore their given names and give them civilized Christian names.

That movie was based on a short film but the director that was on YouTube:

Well I finally saw it. Not really impressed. I'm not a fan of cinéma vérité to start with, so that fake documentary business doesn't sit well with me. Add to it a character that it's hard to sympathize with and it's pretty much done for me.

Not to mention plot holes you could drive a truck through, and people acting in ways that defied all possible logic :wtf:

Visuals were good, but aside from that it was pretty meh.

i did think it was interesting that the Nigerians were depicted as being almost as foreign and inhuman as the prawns, though...

They should have been more foreign and inhumane.

I saw it yesterday, I enjoyed it. Typical Sci-Fi movie, interesting storyline, believable characters, it had a message, but it never interfered with the story, some kick ass alien weapons too.
