Whats in derfs garage today

A buddy of mine just bought a 2003 GSXR 750 with 8k miles for $2500, a decent price for a bike with some rash on the plastics, but otherwise mechanically sound. It did need some work though, it was lowered a few inches and it required some effort to steer, both brake levers were snapped off, and it needed its first oil change for its new owner. The PO said it had an oil change 1k miles ago but who knows what year that was? it's 7 years old with about a thousand miles per year...

The bike as it sits now, a little short huh? it bottomed out getting into my driveway

I had some help getting the plastics off

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6077141_n.jpg

And after

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2681414_n.jpg

Yeh it was lowered a bit

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2080341_n.jpg

The bike off its wheels so I can raise it back to stock

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1943147_n.jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6150076_n.jpg

Stock parts (middle) vs lowered parts (outside)

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4882273_n.jpg

Bike back on its feet, pulled the tank to look at the air filter

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2863999_n.jpg

and just for shits and giggles my daughter pointed out to me what the plate meant.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4907668_n.jpg

And finally proof my son did some work, he actually took most of the body off by himself with some direction, and me starting the body screws for him. Then with some more direction he pulled off the side panels and nose

I love that generation GSXR, and they can be found pretty cheap. Trouble is, most of them have been either squid-owned and were therefore not maintained properly and usually crashed multiple times or they have like 900 miles on them and the owners think they are some kind of "special edition showpiece" worth more than the new MSRP. :lol

SEE!! THAT is what kids are for. I had mine in the garage doing the brakes to the miata.

Awesome to see the kids working but no need to be a dick about it.

For Christ's sake, buy the kid a set of T handles!

He's keeping it, its his first "big bike", previous bike was a 125 vespa scooter. He's actually down in NC taking the harly MSF basic course because he never had to shift a bike before, and he kept stalling it when he tried to move

Dave 10-14-2010 12:21 PM

Id say yikes but I'm not much better

I dont even have a set of T handle allen keys, my FIL left me a few dozen L shaped ones when he passed, they work fine for me

You are very lucky to have your children are involved in the process. I am jealous

She wants to drive it, she gets to work on it.

Dick about it? See above... I do agree on the T-handles though.

Derf, it's good to see someone else working with their kids in the garage. It can sometimes be frustrating stopping and explaining things. And, not working at the pace you normally would. But, it's completely worth it in the end.

That's why my friends don't come over when I'm working on stuff. I'll take the time to stop and explain what I'm doing whether they want to hear it or not. LOL

I'm the complete opposite, I almost can't stop. Vic gets mad at me all the time cause we were supposed to do mods together and I'm like "what? You passed me tools." Lol

Dick about it, naw, he just needs to learn the value of hard work. Actually I just cant bring myself to buy a set when I have every size I already need.

It's why I now don't work on bikes at the track. That garage is too large, and open to other humans walking through. Do you have any idea how often Bo or Evan have advised people to walk away from me.... and said person somehow tries to take tools away from me to "help" :skep:

The kids are great, they are curious and actually interested in working. Other people are just curious.

I can see Bo or Evan warning bystanders to keep their distance, but for someone to actually try to take tools from you? Wow, I'd pay money to see that. :lol I'd imagine that would get a pretty sharp retort, if not a torque wrench upside the head. :D

the chi 10-15-2010 09:30 AM

They do that crap to me too, "oh, you're so cute, let me take care of that for you." Eff you buddy, unless I need brute strength to get something loose, back off.

I'm a very cranky mechanic. Just ask my hubby.

I'm just a girl, but for some reason Im the only one on the ride that always has tools. And zip ties. And a knife.

That's pretty good... quick little bugger. :)

defector 10-15-2010 10:54 AM

Now that my kid has his own big bike, I hardly even have to ask him to help with anything in the garage.
This morning he sent me a text to let me know we need safety wire before we hit the track day next weekend, because my bike wouldn't pass tech. :lol

I wasn't being serious about the dick comment. I was busting Derf's chops for "forcing" his kid to use sub-par tools.

I agree 100% with the hard work.

I also thought the same way about the "L" shaped allens, for a while.

All it takes is one nick in a new paint job or enough times getting frustrated over having to stop, remove, rotate hand and reinsert the tool, and you'll find the nearest Harbor Freight.

What he said!!

I can vouch for the L shaped Allen's nicking paint.
