Sea Turtle Rescue (pics)

So last week it was cold, even in Florida. So cold that sea turtles were shocked into unconsciousness. About 1700 turtles were found and rescued in the area floating on top of the water or on the beach. Florida Fish and Wildlife took them to a local aquarium and warmed them up in a pool. Today they brought about 50 of them to the Navy base I work at, loaded them on a boat and took them out to sea to find warmer water to release them in. They smell btw

cool stuff, lot o turtles there. I read soem stuff last week about the problesm with the cold and the sea turtles.

Wonder if they would migrate south, we have spots up here on LI where some of them make nests for the hatchlings.

Holy crap, those things are huge! Did you just throw them overboard or do you go out and gently place them back in the water?

Haven't seen those since I was living on St. Croix.
One of the beaches there was a protected nesting area and you could go on nighttime turtle watch type excursions.

I have never run in to it on the west coast of FL, though there were turtles rescued here as well, but on the east coast during certain times of year the hotels make you keep your blinds closed so no light can get to the beach. It has something to do with the turtles getting confused and moving toward lights instead of to the ocean.

Or perhaps it gives predators (seabirds, etc) an unfair advantage?
Actually, I can see where light would affect them if the water is to the east. They might interpret the hotel lights to be the rising sun on the horizon. :idk:
