I had a neighbor die recently from brain cancer. He was 38 years old. About a year ago right after he was diagnosed, he was unable to work and was forced to quit his job. Since he quit his job he was not eligible for unemployment or continued health insurance but he was able to get disability. The disability was not enough to cover their day to day bills let alone the continued medical bills that came in. After a year, they were in danger of loosing their house for non payment and they couldnt afford to cloth their 2 little girls or hardly feed them. He passed away about a month or so ago an now his wife is able to collect life insurance so she won't have to lose their house. She got (financially) lucky but what if he lived another year or so? :idk: They'd be living on the street. Our health system sucks!

I can only hope that when it's my time to go, I go quick. I don't want to put my family through financial crises to have me hang on for the inevitable. A little late now but I am a big believer in large life insurance policies. Terminal sickness can cost you hundreds of thousands if not millions if you don't have medical insurance.

I would suggest, but have no idea if it will help, to look into charitable organizations which may offer help for treatment with this particular form of cancer or cancer in general. That really sucks though and I'm sorry to hear it. :(

Look into Emergency Medicaid. The social workers at the hospital should have some more info on it.

When my dad was in the hospital, a patient came in the next bed and he was just diagnosed with lukemia and didn't have any insurance. The docs and the social worker said they would get him on emergency medicaid ASAP. I don't know how it would work in GA, but worth looking into.

Why wouldn't he qualify for medicaid if he has been out of work?

he can't be denied treatment just because of inability to pay if it's considered an emergency... how far along is the prostate cancer?

He should be able to transfer any property into a family members name with no (or little) taxation. Go to the media if you have to to make an ass of the system...I bet they cover him really quick...

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope you find someone that will help. No one should have to go untreated for any reason.

Reminds me of the doctor that was on the news the other day for charging patients a flat rate of $79 and the government was trying to shut him down for that. I don't see a problem with it, if that is what he and his patients agree to it shouldn't be anyone else's business, especially the government.
