I'd have to disagree with that.
"Student guitar" screams cheap piece of crap to me. You'll be hard pressed to find one that has a decent action, (how far the strings are above the fretboard, low is good, high is bad) so it will be harder to play, which leads to the guitar sitting in the corner due to frustration. Saving money on a guitar you're not going to play, is a false economy.
You'd be better served buying something half way decent, and more playable. There are several guitars that can be bought used, for 300-400 bucks, that would fall into this category. I could write an entire thesis on what to look for, but that info is already out there on the intertubes.
As far as Acoustic/Electrics go, I'd pass. Unless you're planning on touring Holiday Inns, you don't need one. You won't get a real rock sound out of an A/E anyway, so why bother? Worry about the basics first, and then get an electric later, if that's way you want to go.
