"Student guitar" screams cheap piece of crap to me. You'll be hard pressed to find one that has a decent action, (how far the strings are above the fretboard, low is good, high is bad) so it will be harder to play, which leads to the guitar sitting in the corner due to frustration. Saving money on a guitar you're not going to play, is a false economy.

Ok, there you have a point. I just know a ton of people who have bought high end musical instruments only to leave them in the corner to collect dust once the novelty has worn off.
