The lights and motors don't actually fail, it's the cheap plastic gear inside the motors. The plastic isn't strong enough for the job, and the gears inevitably strip. The headlights usually still work, but make a horrible noise when being raised or lowered.

Like I said, there is a guy who makes brass gears for them. I'll probably give that a shot when I get back to the States. With that done, they should be problem-free forever.
