I'm not a fan of using a backpack on a bike, in any way. They aren't shaped right to be bungied to the tail. If they're worn on the back, then they have a nasty habit of flipping the rider over onto his face in a slide. Properly made luggage is readily available, generally safer, and not all that expensive considering the possible alternatives.
