Those aren't even particularly lightweight. 2500 lbs (about what the Mini and Miata weigh) is light compared to most of the other cars made today but the Miata has gained 300 lbs since the first generation (increase of about 15%) while the new Mini weighs damn near 1,000 lbs more than the original Mini (sold until 2000 in England).
Concerning the mileage your parents were getting with that Civic look it up on fueleconomy.gov . It is the EPA's website listing mileage. I'll bet they were getting better mileage than the EPA now says the car is capable of. The Corolla should respond similarly to a lighter foot.
