You can dig out the spot, then patch it with a ready mix compound that can be purchased at most hardware stores. I would be very surprised if it were a tree root. We have one big tree in front of the house, but thats a goot 20 feet away and the sidewalk and other parts of the stairs and yard are intact. I guess I will be making another pilgrimige to lowes for soem fo this stuff, I may try holding out for a while unless it gets bigger where I may trip over it since I back the bike up out of the garage door right next to it. I am sure whatever I put there willl get trashed over the winter as well.
