FWIW my helmet speakers still allow me to hear somewhat...depends on the volume of course. I'd imagine the same holds true for an out board unit. As loud as some of these guys have them going, I doubt that they can hear anything else.
If you are already wearing earplugs, I don't see how helmet speakers could make it worse...you could always buy a quieter helmet Suomy man...
