Lots of people are too stupid to comprehend groups and categories of apps. So they want an icon for each app, instead of a menu.
I have a Win 8 phone (Nokia 920), and I like how the tiles update whenever I get a new message (email, text, or VM). And there are other tiles I've installed that show stock market updates, sports scores, and so on. This allows you to see if anything has changed, without having to actually open the app.
But that's the only good thing about Win 8, imo. If you have a ton of apps and want to find them quickly, the old Start menu technique worked better.
