The "k" prefix is the generation designation aka mark, every time the model gets updated it's listed in the blue book and catalogs as one k higher. My '03 is a k3, the 04 is a k4 even though they look almost identical, the 04 had changes made to the suspension and brakes so it's called a different generation.

I thought it designated the year. like k6 is short for 2k6 (k being a thousand obviously) which is short for 2006.

GSX-R Models are often referred to using their model codes W,Y,K1. These can be useful when ordering parts or downloading manuals.

GSX-R 1990 - (L)
GSX-R 1991 - (M)
GSX-R 1992 - (N)

GSX-R 2000 - (Y)
GSX-R 2001 - (K1)

As you can see, The K simply refers to the year of production starting with 2001.
