Downshift? Neutral? E brake, I mean, there is a reason they call it the emergency brake.

Strange.

Kind of strange that no one else in the car or the 911 operator thought of any of these suggestions.

A long time ago my aunt’s accelerator stuck and she completely panicked. I guess the car was headed for a wall so she jumped. She got a little banged up but no broken bones.

I heard audio of the 911 call this morning...the operator asked him if he could turn the car off...his response was he's going into an intersection. Then the audio stops.

A 50 second call plus the time it takes to make the call and get an answer and you still can't figure out that all you had to do was brake and kill the engine. My first thought would be to reach for the keys...

Wasn't this standard stuff in the DMV booklet for your learner permit?
Not supposed to kill the engine because you lose power brakes and risk engaging the steering lock.

Toss it in neutral....listen to that engine bounce of the rev limiter as you move to a safe spot to stop, kill the engine and find the problem.

good point, I forgot about power steering/brake loss if you turn the key too far. Probably would of ended better than accelerating to whatever they got to though. A wreck at 50 mph would of been a lot softer than the 190 km/h or 118 mph they reported...

Yet another reason stick-shift is the superior choice......It would have been second-nature for him to push the clutch in.

The idea of putting an automatic tranny into neutral would take alot longer to register in the brains of most people.

My car keeps power to the steering and brakes if you turn off the key.
